SpongeBob earns Iranian 6 month ban

Iran and Persepolis goalkeeper Sosha Makani faces a six month suspension from international football after he was spotted wearing SpongeBob SquarePants trousers.

Image of the 29-year-old emerged online on May 6, shortly before the player turned out for his club side Persepolis. The image triggered commentary in the media – with many likening Makani’s dress to the famous animation sponge.

Iran who has strict laws in place concerning clothing have allegedly suspended the player on the grounds of ‘inappropriate conduct’, reports the BBC.

The Iranian football federation’s morality committee have since confirmed the player’s clothing was at least partially attributable to the ban.

Makani can still appeal the decision but faces an uphill battle given a previous offence at the 2014 World Cup. Then, Makani was arrested following images of him in the presence of an unknown woman were leaked.

Iran also has strict rulings preventing the interaction of unrelated men and women.

Makani has made three appearances for Iran’s national team.
