Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez appears to have rejected a move to Manchester United in order to stay at the Vicente Calderon.

Reports had suggested that new Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho was keen on bringing the young midfielder to Old Trafford this summer, with the club prepared to cough-up the £54-million release clause in the 21-year-old’s contract.

But any prospect of a move now looks set to fail, as Saul has stated his desire to remain with the Champions League finalists for the foreseeable future.

‘I’m fine in Madrid, I play often and I’m happy. Atletico is the club where I intend to stay. Simeone? We all want him to stay,’ Niguez told AS.

‘I would have liked to have been called up by Del Bosque but for me it was already an award to be in the preliminary squad.’

Saul’s efforts this season were not deemed good enough for the Spanish national side as the player was cut from the final 23 for Euro 2016.

Nevertheless, the player is confident he will make his mark with the national side in the future.

‘Now I have to work hard with Atletico because sooner or later my chance will come,’ the the midfielder added.

Saul made 46 appearances for Atletico this season, netting nine times and assisting a further four strikes.
