Manchester United defeated Leicester City by a 2-1 scoreline to claim the Community Shield trophy on Sunday as the side kickstarted the new English season in style.

The game got off to a cagey start as neither side was able to manufacture an opening. It was the Red Devils who controlled the vast majority of the ball, with the Foxes happy to sit back and hit United on the break.

The first chance fell to Leicester’s Shinji Okazaki as his looping header struck the bar following a corner, 19 minutes gone.

United’s first meaningful chance of the game resulted in a spectacular goal. With the ball falling Jesse Lingard, the wing set off on an explosive run, beating several players before doing enough with his finish to beat Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal.

The game settled back into its lumbering rhythm following the goal as the sides cancelled one another out. At the half-time interval, it was United who led by 1-0.

The second half began with United looking to probe as Anthony Martial had a run at the Leicester defence. However,  it wasn’t long before Leicester levelled the scores. A weak back-pass by Marouane Fellaini was intercepted by Jamie Vardy, who calmly rounded the David de Gea before scoring.

United whipped in several threatening crosses over the following minutes before Leicester came close to creating a couple of chances off counters, with neither side causing any serious danger.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a glorious chance to poke Manchester United into the lead in the 80th minute but couldn’t get enough purchase on his effort as it was cleared off the line.

Then, with the clock rapidly running down, Ibrahimovic put the Red Devils back ahead with a towering header, following great work from Antonio Valencia.

In the end, the scores remained unchanged as Manchester United lifted the trophy following the 2-1 victory.
