Liverpool came out on top in their Merseyside derby against Everton, after securing a 3-1 victory in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds got off to a fiery start in the opening exchanges of the match, and opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Sadio Mane beat his marker before firing a low shot into the bottom right corner to find the back of the net.

The Toffees had their first chance at goal in the 14th minute when Gueye found Romelu Lukaku at the edge of the Liverpool box, but he was unable to control the ball, allowing the home side to regain possession once again.

Everton then levelled matters in the 28th minute when Phil Jagielka whipped a corner into the path of Ashley William, but he was unable to get a foot on the ball before Dejan Lovren knocked it back to Pennington, who then calmly slotted a shot into the back of the net.

However, Liverpool restored their lead three minutes later when Philippe Coutinho beat Pennington, before firing a superb curling effort past Robles and into the top right-hand corner of the net.

After the first 45 minutes of the match, Jurgen Klopp’s side went into the half-time interval with a 2-1 lead over rivals Everton.

The Toffees had a chance to level matters in the 56th minute when Ross Barkley received the ball just outside the penalty area, but his strike was well saved by Mignolet.

However, two minutes later the Reds extended their lead when Coutinho worked the ball to Divock Origi, before the Belgian beat Williams at the edge of the box to fire a great strike past Robles and make it 3-1.

Ronald Koeman’s side had another chance at goal when Holgate unleashed a low strike at goal, which took a heavy deflection, but Mignolet did well to produce a fine save to deny the Everton player.

With two minutes left to play, Lukaku picked up the ball right outside the box before trying to set up Valencia over at the far post, but his deep cross was overhit and sailed past the Ecuadorian before flying out for a goal-kick.

The Reds held on to their 3-1 lead over Everton to secure all three points, and claim the bragging rights over their local rivals at Anfield.
