A 10-man Hull City overcame Newcastle United 3-1 on penalties at the KC Stadium on Tuesday night to advance to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

The Tigers suffered a blow in the 89th minute when Dieumerci Mbokani was sent off for head-pushing towards Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles, with the game still goalless.

Newcastle took advantage in extra time as Mohamed Diame scored in the 98th minute against his former side, before Robert Snodgrass replied just 77 seconds later, and the match had to be settled in a penalty shootout.

Jonjo Shelvey saw his penalty kick saved before Dwight Gayle fired against the bar, and then Eldin Jakupovic saved from Yoan Gouffran to book Hull’s place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
