Leicester City made a winning start to their Champions League journey as star wing Riyad Mahrez stepped up to steer the Foxes to victory.

Facing a trip away to Club Brugge, Leicester got off to a good start in the tie as Marc Albrighton capitalised on a defensive error to opening the scoring. Then: Step up Riyad Mahrez.

Thrust with the responsibility of taking a free-kick, the Algerian duly smashed it home to put his side 2-0 up in the tie. The 25-year-old then put the match beyond all doubt when he powered home a penalty after a foul on Jamie Vardy later on.

According to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match centre, the wing made 38 touches in his 83-minutes on the pitch as chipped in with two interceptions and a clearance. Having also contributed a clearance, Mahrez proved industrious with the ball he completed 21 of his 25 passes.

Mahrez was proved himself clinical with his shooting on the day – with two of his three shots on target and both subsequently hitting the back of the net.
