Euro 2016: Golden Boot race heats up

The race for the Golden Boot remains fiercely contested between stars from three of the four surviving teams.

Currently sitting top of the scoring charts with four strikes is French forward Antoine Griezmann. The Atletico Madrid man has been in superb form since coming off the bench to nod in his first goal of the tournament against Albania, as he starred with a brace against Ireland before netting again in the annihilation of Iceland.

Teammate Olivier Giroud has battled his way into contention following his brace against the same opposition. The Arsenal striker currently has three goals to his name having scored in France’s opening game against Romania.

Concluding the trio of French contenders is Dimitri Payet. The West Ham winger continued his remarkable form with yet another strike from range against Iceland, which took his tally for the tournament to three following goals against Romania and Albania.

Wales superstar Gareth Bale remains firmly in the running for the Golden Boot as he sits on three strikes for the tournament. The Real Madrid forward buried free kicks against both Slovakia and England before he poked home his third in his side’s demolition of Russia. One goal further back sits Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Though Ronaldo has largely cut a frustrated figure in the tournament thus far, the forward showed flashes of his brilliant best when he netted twice against Hungary, proving he should never be ruled out of contention.

Also currently on two goals sit the likes Wales star Hal Robson-Kanu and Portugal forward Nani.

Each could yet stake a late claim for the Golden Boot with a superb performance in the semi-finals. Germany’s leading scorer Mario Gomez, meanwhile, has no chance of catching Griezmann having being ruled for the remainder of the tournament,
