Eden proves to be hazardous

Eden Hazard shone as Belgium saw off Sweden to qualify for the last 16 of Euro 2016, writes WADE PRETORIUS.

Neither side managed to find the early goal in Nice with Belgium knowing that conceding late would end their campaign, they chased the vital goal.

Chelsea playmaker and captain Hazard stood up and created the chance that Radja Nainggolan drove home in the 84th minute.

According to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match centre, Hazard misplaced just 4 of his 47 passes and created 4 other chances during the hard-fought encounter.

Hazard’s passing accuracy was well above his team average of 79% as he attempted lead by example as the tension grew in the Group E clash. The Belgium captain created five of his sides 16 chances and more than half the number Sweden created.

One concern for Hazard as they prepare for Sunday’s clash against Hungary is his shooting. He failed to get a single shot on target from his three efforts, a real concern for a player of his stature.

The loss ends the international career of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who failed to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring at four European Championships. Ibrahimovic had six of his side’s 12 chances, firing just one on target and four wide of Thibaut Courtois’ goals in an evening to forget as he lost the personal battle for glory against Hazard.
