Manchester United have announced that midfielder Michael Carrick has agreed to extend his contract, keeping him at the club until June 2017.

During his time at the club, Carrick has won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, one Capital One Cup, a Fifa Club World Cup, and a Champions League, report the Manchester United website.

The England international says he is delight to have sign a contract extension with the Red Devils and is grateful for the opportunity to work with a manager of Jose Mourinho’s credentials.

‘This great club has been a part of my life for the past 10 years, so I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing,’ said Carrick.

‘It’s great to have the opportunity to work under José Mourinho, who has achieved so much during his managerial career. I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and, hopefully, we can go on to win more trophies in the future,’ the midfielder added.

The ‘Special One’ went on to praise the attributes and experience of the midfielder and believes he will be a huge asset to the team ahead of the 2016-17 season.

‘Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game. I am pleased that he will be extending his contract. His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever,’ Mourinho said.

‘Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him,’ he added.

Over the course of the 2015-16 season Carrick has created one assist, while appearing in 42 matches for United.

The 34-year-old signed for United in July 2006.
