Jordan Spieth took a share of the opening-round lead at the AT&T Byron Nelson on Thursday, while South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel also made a cracking start.

Spieth was in one of his excellent moods again around the golf course and worked his way through a low-scoring, bogey-free round at TPC Craig Ranch.

The American sank five birdie putts on the front nine before continuing his dominance after the turn – converting two more birdies before a brilliant eagle on the 18th capped off a spectacular day.

Spieth signed off with a nine-under-par 63 to move to the top of the leaderboard alongside countryman JJ Spaun.

Spaun also enjoyed a cracking start to his week at the Byron Nelson and produced an effortless first-round performance, which also yielded not a single birdie.

Schwartzel, however, managed to conclude his first round only two strokes behind the leaders on seven under par.

The 2011 Masters champion was firing hot across his 18 holes but especially lit up on his back nine where an eagle and three birdies on the final five holes propelled him up the leaderboard.

Schwartzel also avoided any bogeys throughout his round to come home with an opening-round 65.
