Shaun Norris took an early hold on fifth place at the Singapore Open with a Thursday round of 67 at Sentosa Golf Club, which put him within two strokes of the lead.

The two-time Asian Tour winner shared 52nd place at the SA Open a week ago after battling around in 76 during the final round. He finished the tournament on three under par and tied with Garth Mulroy and Englishman Daniel Brooks.

Norris came out firing with birdies at the third and fourth, dropped a shot at the fifth and then birdied again at the sixth to turn in 34.

He birdied the first two holes on the back nine and coasted home with all pars to sign for a four under par 67.

Countryman Jbe’ Kruger was also in the picture after shooting three under par 68 for the first round. He made no bogeys and was tied for seventh place, three shots off the pace.

Japan’s Hideto Tanihara and Korea’s Kyungnam Kang led the first round after each shooting 65 in sunny conditions on the Singapore coastline.
