Rory McIlroy has fired long-time caddie JP Fitzgerald after nine years, four Majors and a run as the world’s leading player, according to reports.

A Reuters source has revealed the news, meaning McIlroy will have a new man on his bag for the first time since 2008, when he tees up at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational this week.

Now all eyes will be on the Northern Irishman’s arrival at Firestone Country Club in Ohio, after the world number four’s management team did not respond to questions.

The news comes on the back of Phil Mickelson and Jim Mackay going their separate ways after 25 years, and Fitzgerald making the news after his strong words inspired McIlroy’s comeback at Royal Birkdale.
