Thomas Bjorn was named as captain for Team Europe at the 2018 Ryder Cup, golf’s biggest match play showdown.

The Dane was vice-captain at Hazeltine earlier this year (his fourth time in the role) and has played on three successful Ryder Cup teams.

He was set to beat Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood and Paul Lawrie to the role of captain when the biennial contest heads to Le Golf National in 2018.

Bjorn, aged 45, won 15 timers in an illustrious European Tour career, including a triumph at the 2013 Nedbank Golf Challenge. He has been the head of that tour’s Player Committee and is a clear leader, with an occasionally abrasive demeanour.

An official announcement is due to be made on Tuesday.
