Banyana Banyana began their Africa Women’s Cup of Nations campaign with a goalless draw with Zimbabwe at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo on Saturday evening.

The South African side looked a more lively side in the opening minutes of the match and threaten in the final third but failed to convert their opportunities.

Banyana had a golden opportunity to opening their account in the AWCON in the 25th minute when Thembi Kgatlana setup Shiwe Nogwanya but she failed to find the back of the net from point-blank range.

Amanda Dlamini then came to Banyana’s rescue when she made an impressive save to deny Zimbabweans the opening goal.

The Mighty Warriors pushed forward in search of the opening goal as the half went on but the Banyana Banyana shot-stopper was in inspirational for to keep out the Zimbabwean onslaught, making a few vital saves to keep the score level at 0-0.

Desiree Ellis’ side looked the better side in the second half and continued to create opportunities in the final third but Zimbabwe goalkeeper Chido Dzingirai was on hand to deny Kgatlana before Jermaine Seoposenwe failed to convert her chance in the closing stages of the match.

However,  the score remained goalless at the full-time whistle and both side’s were forced to share the spoils taking a point each in their opening AWCON match.
