Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter revealed on Monday that former striker Shaun Bartlett has joined the squad as one of the temporary assistants.

The English coach revealed that Bartlett has entered into a short-term agreement with the SA Football Association (Safa) which will see the former AmaTuks coach assist with the players’ preparations ahead of the African Cup of Nations doubleheader against Seychelles over the next week.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Baxter explained his idea of trying to rope in more ‘legends’ of South African football not only to give them a platform to boost their own coaching careers but also inspire some of the players who grew up idolising these Bafana heroes of the past.

Speaking about the appointment, Baxter said, ‘Shaun has entered into an agreement with the association. I think it’s more of game by game in the beginning.

‘But obviously, we are looking at bringing Shaun into the staff. It’s welcome to him.’

Bartlett, is Bafana Bafana’s second highest goalscorer behind only Benni McCarthy, with 29 goals in 74 appearances. The former striker is currently without a coaching job and will be looking to add to the experience he gained as the head coach of the University of Pretoria and Lamontville Golden Arrows in the Absa Premiership.

Bartlett’s ‘unattached position’ has made the appointment simple according to Baxter, who has previously tried a similar appointment with Orlando Pirates assistant coach Rhulani Mokowena.

Bafana host Seychelles at FNB Stadium on Saturday and will then travel to the islanders’ home to play in the return match on Tuesday afternoon.
