Orlando Pirates says they were surprised by SuperSport United’s approach for Terrence Dzvukamanja but the Buccaneers revealed they released the Zimbabwean striker to Matsatsantsa.

The 29-year-old pleaded with the Buccaneers to release him in order to go back and play in Zimbabwe to deal with family matters.

In a shock turn of events, Dzvukamanja has been in talks with SuperSport and the Buccaneers have since released the Zimbabwean international, who now looks set to join Matsatsantsa.

“Terrence Dzvukamanja, approached the Club pleading to be released to play in Zimbabwe to be close to home in order to address pressing family matters,” Pirates said in a statement

“After consideration, the Club offered to pay his salary whilst sorting out his personal issues at home. The Club acceded to this on compassionate grounds.

“As part of the Club’s commitment to players’ welfare, Orlando Pirates makes an effort to, where possible, meet the players’ requests in circumstances that help amongst other things, their mental wellbeing.

“The Club was therefore surprised by an approach from SuperSport United for the player’s services since the Club had made plans to include the player in their CAF Champions League squad.

“With this new development, the Club will release Dzvukamanja to SuperSport United.”

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has heaped praise on duo Terrence Dzvukamanja and Monnapule Saleng on their exceptional performance for the Buccaneers this season.

Saleng and Dzvukamanja played a starring role to help the Sea Robbers beat Sekhukhune United 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Sibusiso Vilakazi opened the scoring for Sekhukhune in the 12th minute but Tapelo Xoki levelled matters from the penalty spot in the 47th minute before Dzvukamanja put the game to bed deep into stoppage time to hand Pirates the title.

Riveiro was impressed with Dzvukamanja’s exploits throughout the season despite his slow start to the 2022-23 season.

“Terrence, he deserves it. I am so happy for him because we went through difficult times with him during the season,” Riveiro told SuperSport TV after the game.

“The boy was struggling and suffering a lot. Sometimes people did not understand him but he is a fantastic player, and that is why he plays for Orlando Pirates.”

Riveiro is confident that Saleng will be even better after bagging the DStv Premiership Players’ Player of the Season award as well as the MTN8 Lat Man Standing award.

“What can I say about Saleng and his season? I am sure that he can do it better, and he will improve. It is his first season at this level,” he continued.

“There is a big room to understand a lot of this better, so I think his dimension is going to change year after year.”

Orlando Pirates were crowned 2023 Nedbank Cup champions following a late dramatic 2-1 win over Sekhukhune United at a packed Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sibusiso Vilakazi gave United the lead early on in front of a sold-out crowd of 50,000 in Pretoria. Tapelo Xoki tied the game with a penalty in the extra time of the first half to make it a tie.

The game looked like it would go into extra time until Dzvukamanja scored his eighth goal of the season in all competitions. This gave Pirates their ninth FA Cup title.

At the beginning of the season, Pirates hired Spanish coach Jose Riveiro. He led the team to wins in both knockout competitions and a second-place finish in the league, which got them into the CAF Champions League.

“We were not at our best tonight and it is often difficult to perform well in cup finals,” said the 47-year-old who came to South Africa after eight years coaching in Finland.

“The boys were understandably nervous given the enormity of the occasion. Being favourites put extra pressure on us.

“Orlando Pirates are a great club and this is a great day for everyone connected with them — the players, the technical staff, the officials and, most importantly, the supporters.”

Pirates will now focus on Africa, where they hope to win the Champions League for a second time. In 1995, they beat ASEC Mimosas of the Ivory Coast to win the tournament.

Since then, they have lost all of their finals, including the 2013 Champions League final against Al Ahly of Egypt and twice in the Confederations Cup, which is the second-best tournament.

Orlando Pirates reclaimed second spot in the DStv Premiership following their 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.

Hotto scored in the 58th minute at a stadium in the northeastern city of Mbombela that had 45,000 people in it. He scored from close range after two Pirates players won two headers after a corner.

Terrence Dzvukamanja, a Zimbabwean, put the Buccaneers ahead just two minutes after the game began. He was the first player to react to a corner and headed the ball past goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi.

Galaxy tied the game in the 39th minute when captain Spiwe Msimango headed the ball over a defender who was guarding the far post after a corner kick.

Even though they were on the road, most of the fans cheered for the Pirates. They had most of the ball for most of the game, but the Galaxy made a late comeback.

Mamelodi Sundowns won their sixth straight league title on April 1, leaving Pirates, SuperSport United, and Kaizer Chiefs to fight for second place and the other Champions League spot.

After beating Galaxy, Pirates now have 49 points with three rounds left. They are two points ahead of SuperSport and five points ahead of Chiefs, who are their biggest rivals.

Most likely, Pirates will finish in second place, and the match between SuperSport and Chiefs in the penultimate round will decide third place and who gets to play in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Galaxy are still in 12th place, five points above the danger zone, even though they haven’t won in four games.

Orlando Pirates came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Cape Town City at the Orlando Stadium to reclaim second place in the DStv Premiership.

City got off to a good start, and in the 17th minute, Khanyisa Mayo broke the tie with a hard, low shot that beat goalie Sipho Chaine.

But the Pirates responded by putting pressure on the Citizens’ weak defence, and Terrence Dzvukamanja’s header in the 27th minute brought things back to even.

After bringing the score back to even, the home team was in charge. Their top scorer, Monnapule Pule, scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to give Pirates the win.

Orlando Pirates moved up to third in the DAtv Premiership standings after claiming a 2-1 victory over Maritzburg United at the Orlando Stadium on Friday evening.

In-form attacker Monnapule Saleng opened the scoring for Pirates in stoppage time during the first half to hand his side a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The Buccaneers doubled their lead in the 71st minute when Terrence Dzvukamanja found the back of the net with a diving header after latching on to a cross from Saleng.

Maritzburg pulled a goal back in the 85th minute through Tumelo Njoti, which proved to be a consolation goal as Pirates held on to secure all three points.

The Buccaneers are now up to third place on the table which will give them confidence heading into their upcoming Soweto derby against rivals Kaizer Chiefs on February 25.
