Bafana Bafana star Relebohile Mofokeng has expressed unwavering belief in South Africa’s ability to continue their historic World Cup journey, insisting the squad will fight relentlessly to progress as far as possible in the tournament.

Mofokeng once again showcased why he is regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents, delivering an energetic and influential performance against Korea Republic.

The dynamic winger constantly troubled the opposition defence with his pace, close control and direct running, while his creativity in the final third helped Bafana Bafana maintain an attacking threat throughout the encounter.

Mofokeng’s relentless work rate, both in attack and defence, epitomised the fighting spirit displayed by Hugo Broos’ side as they secured a historic place in the World Cup knockout stages.

“We will fight to go as far as possible,” Mofokeng told FIFA.

“We truly believe in our ability to achieve this; we will trust in God and give everything we have to get where we want to be.

“International football is the pinnacle, and as a national team player, you have to evolve constantly. Continuous improvement is essential, both as a player and as a person.

“You must learn from past mistakes to sharpen up for the next match; failing to do so only leads to defeat. We grew into the tournament game by game, and that is what matters most in football.

“South African football is evolving season after season.

“This generation is truly incredible. I believe I am playing alongside some of the best players in the world; their performances are outstanding, and the majority of us play domestically.”

South Africa etched their name into the history books by securing a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time ever, courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Korea Republic.

Thapelo Maseko netted the decisive goal in the 62nd minute as Bafana Bafana secured a second-place finish in Group A.

The winger paid tribute to the passionate supporters who stood by the team throughout their journey, while also sending a message to those who doubted them, insisting that the squad had proven its resilience and strength by overcoming difficult moments.

“It’s unbelievable, it feels like a dream,” Maseko told FIFA.

“Thank you to the fans, they gave it their all.

“This is for everyone who supported us, but also for those who didn’t. There were many people who didn’t believe in us.

“We went through some rough patches. But this team showed that they are capable and strong.”

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos insists their performance has silenced critics, who questioned his methods in recent weeks.

South Africa made history when they secured their progression to the World Cup knockout stages following their 1-0 victory over Korea Republic.

Thapelo Maseko scored the decisive goal in the 62nd minute to see Bafana finish second in the Group A standings.

Broos revealed that his unwavering belief in his players and the unique bond he shares with the squad have been key to the team’s success.

“I’m very proud of the performance of my team and I think we gave an answer to all those big mouths of the last weeks that thought that we had to change something,” said a defiant Broos.

“We just did what we did. We just did what I wanted to do and this is the result.”

“I said it already in the past that probably it will be one of the last games of my career and when you can end a career like I had in this way, I think everybody or every coach dreams of it.”

He added: “Between me as a coach and them as players is yes, maybe something unique – I’m the coach, but I’m not a coach,” he said.

“I think I’m a friend of theirs. So the relationship between the players and me, this is very good.”

Bafana Bafana will shift their focus to their upcoming Round of 32 fixture against co-host Canada when they meet at the SoFi Stadium on Sunday evening.

READ: Thapelo Maseko Etches His Name Into South African Football Folklore

South Africa survived an early scare in just the second minute when Korea Republic threatened from a corner, but Aubrey Modiba came to Bafana Bafana’s rescue with a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Kim Min-jae’s powerful header.

Korea should’ve have taken the lead six minutes later but Lee Kang-in saw his shot sail narrowly wide of the upright.

Bafana responded in the 14th minute when Evidence Makgopa had a chance on goal but the striker could not make a proper connection on the ball as his effort flew wide of goal.

South Africa came close to breaking the deadlock just after the half-hour mark when Seung-Gyu Kim denied Thalente Mbatha’s effort, with the rebound falling kindly to Evidence Makgopa, but the striker failed to capitalise as his point-blank effort was saved by the Korean goalkeeper.

Nether side could find the opening goal in the first-half as the match went into the break locked at 0-0.

Korea opted to bring on fresh legs at the restart as Son Heung-min, Kim Jin-Kyu and Jens Castrop came on to replace Hwang Hee-chan, Paik Seung-ho and Lee Tae-seok.

Maseko had a golden opportunity to hand Bafana the lead in the 50th minute when he was played through on goal by Relebohile Mofokeng but the forward failed to trouble the keeper with his effort.

Rowen Williams came to his sides rescue on the hour mark when he made a vital save to deny Hyeongyu’s goal-bound effort.

Hugo Broos made his first substitution in the 62nd minute as Oswin Appollis was taken off and replaced by Tshepang Moremi, who makes his debut at the World Cup.

Bafana eventually takes the lead in the 62nd minute when Thapelo Maseko finds the back of the net after his fifth attempt at goal to hand his side the lead.

Korea made their fourth substitution of the match in the 65th minute when Kim Minjae was taken off and replaced by Park Jin-seob.

Both sides made chances after the 75th minute as Cho Gue-sung came on for Oh Hyeon-gyu, while South Africa brought on Iqraam Rayners to replace goal scorer Maseko.

Broos opted to go more defensively in the 80th minute as Mofokeng was taken off and replaced by Jayden Adams.

Korea had a rare chance at goal in the 86th minute but Seol Young-woo failed to make the most of his chance as he blazed his effort wide of goal.

Williams came to his sides rescue in stoppage-time when he came out to collect the ball before Park Jin-seob could get his header attempt on goal as a result of a cross into the box.

South Africa held on to their nerve until the final whistle to secure the win and their progression into the knockout stages after finishing second in Group A.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has warned his side that Korea Republic will pose a serious challenge for South Africa.

South Africa will be on the hunt for their first win at the World Cup following their 1-1 draw against Czechia last week.

Bafana will be looking to secure maximum points when they meet Korea in their final Group A encounter at the Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe.

Broos described the Asian side as relentless and highly organised, comparing their energy levels to “Duracells” and highlighting their ability to maintain a high work rate for 90 minutes.

“I’m very sorry to say this, but they [South Korea] are like Duracells: you plug them in, and they start running, and they run for 90 minutes, so it will not be easy.

“Yes, South Korea is a little bit in between Mexico and Czechia: it’s a very disciplined team.

“This is a characteristic of the Eastern teams; they are always disciplined, you saw that in their game against Czechia. They also have good players, a few key players in the team.”

England star Jude Bellingham admitted to feeling frustrated after they were held to a goalless draw by Ghana in their second World Cup group match.

The Three Lions got their World Cup campaign off to a great start following their 4-2 victory over Croatia last week.

However, they were unable to replicate the same result after playing out to a goalless draw against Ghana at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The midfielder acknowledged England’s struggles to break down a well-organised Ghana side, praising their opponents for executing their game plan perfectly while conceding that his side could not find a way through.

“Very frustrating. Like, second-game fever, you know, the same as always with us,” said the Real Madrid midfielder.

“It feels like in all the tournaments I’ve been to, it’s been the same, a decent performance to start and a good win.

“And then just the second one frustrated a little bit with how they defended, how they set up… credit to them. They got exactly out of the game what they played for, couldn’t quite break them down.”

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up on the criticism directed at both himself and the national team, admitting it has been a difficult period for the squad.

The Portuguese side secured their first win in Group K after they recorded a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Ronaldo finally opened his account at the World Cup after netting a double to help his side secure the win and all three points.

The veteran superstar revealed that the past week had been especially challenging, with intense scrutiny from the public and media, particularly towards head coach Roberto Martinez, but insisted that such criticism is something he has grown accustomed to during his remarkable career.

“I can say it was a very tough week, a difficult week, a week in which public opinion was very harsh on us, on all the players, especially on the coach,” Ronaldo said afterwards.

“But it’s always like that, it’s fine because when you think about it, it’s already 23 years I’ve been a professional and whenever things don’t go well it’s, ‘Cristiano, he’s finished, he’s old’.”

England manager Thomas Tuchel has spoken openly about the pressure and emotions surrounding his squad as they prepare to take on Ghana in their next World Cup match.

The Three Lions got their World Cup campaign off to a great start after claiming a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening Group L fixture.

England will be hoping to continue their winning run when they take on Ghana at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Tuchel insists that his experienced group of players are capable of coping with the intensity and turning it into performance on the pitch.

“There are emotions involved and you can at some point feel the tension and feel the pressure. I hope we can cope with it, accept it and turn it around,” Tuchel said.

“I heard also a lot about it and I feel of course the excitement and the pressure, but I feel that we have so many winners and so many players who are experienced to cope with the pressure.”
