Kaizer Chiefs right-back Thabiso Monyane says the disappointment of their MTN8 defeat has served as a wake-up call for the squad as they look to bounce back against Sekhukhune United.

The Glamour Boys were eliminated from the MTN8 following their 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows in the quarter-finals.

Amakhosi will be hoping to return to winning ways when they face Sekhukhune in their next Betway Premiership encounter at the FNB Stadium.

Monyane acknowledges the challenge posed by a well-organised Sekhukhune side, while insisting that Chiefs are fully focused on securing a positive result before turning their attention to Mamelodi Sundowns.

“The MTN8 loss really tested us as a group and we have used that as fuel to improve all areas of our game, to sharpen up.

“It has been a wake-up call for all of us and we are preparing very hard to play Sekhukhune.

“They are a tough, hard-running team that is well organised so it will not be easy, but it’s a chance for the boys to put in the work necessary to get a good result and we are going to go for it.

“We know Sundowns are looming in the background but we are taking one step at a time and our full attention is focused on facing Sekhukhune.”

TS Galaxy head coach Bernard Parker praised his side’s performance despite their narrow defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Rockets suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to the Brazilians at the Mbombela Stadium in the Betway Premiership.

However, Parker believes a brief lapse in concentration ultimately proved costly, but remains confident Galaxy can learn from the setback and build on their promising display as the season progresses.

“Tough one, hard one to swallow, we had a game-plan, stuck to the game-plan, we showed tenacity, we showed the unity, and the main objective for us was to attack the space behind which we did well, got a couple of chances,” Parker told SuperSport after the game.

“We managed to get a goal, managed to get another goal on set-plays, which we worked a lot on, we scored last week on set-plays, we continue to get a goal again on set-plays but overall I’m proud of the boys in terms of how they conduct themselves.

“Just a lapse of concentration after being in front, we put in an extra defender to make sure we keep it solid in the central space of the field and then Sundowns added more attackers as well and they overloaded the sides and that’s where the two goals come on the right side for them to win the match.

“But I’m happy with the boys, the way they conduct themselves, just a little bit of lapse of concentration. I hope we will learn from this, there’s still a long season ahead and for us to build on this in terms of the way we want to play and how we play,” he concluded.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes Sphelele Mkhulise should have walked away with the Man of the Match award following his match-winning performance.

The Brazilians secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over TS Galaxy in their Betway Premiership opener at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Galaxy striker Victor Letsoalo, who scored a brace, was named Man-of-the-Match, but the Sundowns mentor believes that substitute Mkhulise should have walked away with the award.

Cardoso believes Mkhulise deservedly earned the Man-of-the-Match award after providing the energy and crucial goal Sundowns needed to secure the result.

“I think he deserves to be man-of-the-match today, sorry by all the work Letsoalo did. But I think today the Man-of-the-Match will very deservedly be Pitso Mkhulise by what he means, what he means for the club for us,” Cardoso told SuperSport after the game.

“He is a player with a fantastic character because he is able to sometimes sustain the aggression of not being called.

“But we know that we have a brother, a friend, somebody that has quality and when we bring him, we know what to expect.

“Today, he gave us the luck we needed, the energy that we needed the goal. I put him on my shoulder.

“I took him in front of the fans because he deserves to be carried by me because he also carried us to get the result we needed.”

Is Matome Mmolai the perfect replacement for Relebohile Mofokeng at Orlando Pirates? By Mazola Molefe.

Depending on who you speak to, midfielder Matome Mmolai could soon become a household name at Orlando Pirates – and the timing of his arrival could hardly be better following the departure of talisman Relebohile Mofokeng.

Unlike the Bafana Bafana international, however, Mmolai is not a product of the Pirates academy.

At 23, he arrives at Mayfair via the Motsepe Foundation Championship after impressing for Leicesterford City, making his rise all the more remarkable.

His agent, Basia Michaels of QT Sports, believes Pirates supporters have every reason to be excited.

“He can play at the highest level. No doubt about it. He has guts, he’s ballsy and plays like a man with nothing to lose.

That’s the sign of someone who plays without fear or trepidation. I pray the fans are kind to him because I believe he’ll become a superstar and a fan favourite very quickly,” she tells SoccerClub. Mmolai’s road to Pirates has been anything but conventional.

He returned to Leicesterford City in January 2026 after what he believed would be a move to Betway Premiership side TS Galaxy fell through.

The Rockets attempted to sign him on a free transfer before his club intervened and insisted the player return unless an agreement could be reached between the teams.

What initially looked like a major setback ultimately became the turning point in his career. Michaels watched it all unfold.

“I went to Dobsonville to watch a Leicesterford City game. It’s something I do often, but he’d just returned from TS Galaxy because of the registration issues. I watched him for less than 15 minutes and knew I wanted to manage him,” she explains.

“He was playing against Kruger United and completely bossed the midfield. At first, I didn’t even know who he was. I asked for a team sheet, saw his name and immediately started making calls.”

Those calls led Michaels to Mmolai’s uncle, Masilo, before she met the player’s mother and eventually the midfielder himself.

“After speaking to the family, he signed with QT Sports. From there a number of clubs reached.

I won’t name them all, but there was significant interest.” Michaels admits not everyone agreed with her decision to take Mmolai to Pirates.

“Some club owners told me I’d made a mistake and thrown him into the lions’ den. But that says everything about the player’s ability. As I continued watching him, it became clear he was ready for the next step,” Michaels elaborates.

According to Michaels, the man who now handles most of Pirates’ transfer dealings, Mpumi Khoza, soon made contact and negotiations gathered pace.

“The asking price was met for the new ‘President’,” she said, using the nickname Mofokeng was given while with the Soweto giants prior to his move to Belgium.

It turns out Mmolai also earned the same moniker in the lower divisions, which came because of the supposed authority Mmolai displayed in midfield during his time with Leicesterford City this past season.

Now the midfielder has the opportunity to prove that the faith shown in him was justified as Pirates usher in a new generation following Mofokeng’s departure.

Van Wyk became Sundowns’ first signing of the new season after he completed his transfer from Austrian outfit SV Ried.

The 24-year-old went on to make his first start for Sundowns and got his name on the score sheet as they secured a 3-2 victory over Polokwane City in the quarter-finals of the MTN8.

He paid tribute to the late Jayden Adams after finding the back of the net, dedicating his goal to the former teammate.

“It feels amazing especially playing in front of this amazing crowd, I mean the fans showed up and supported us until the 120 minute,” Van Wyk told Sundowns TV.

“I just want to dedicate my goal to Jayden Adams because he was an important player at this club and he continues to be an important player at this club.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz expressed his disappointment after his side’s defeat, admitting that the Glamour Boys failed to capitalise on their chances.

The Glamour Boys returned to the top-eight competition after a two-year absence, facing Golden Arrows in the quarter-finals.

Amakhosi’s journey in the competition came to a premature end after they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Abafana Bes’thende at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Da Cruz praised his players’ effort but highlighted a lack of composure in front of goal, while also lamenting the result for the supporters who turned out to back the team.

“It’s very disappointing for the players because they put in a lot of effort,” Da Cruz told his club’s official website.

“Also, for the fans because a lot of them came to the stadium. We had a lot of chances to score but we didn’t take them and unfortunately they scored with their only chance from a cross.

“Regarding our chances, we lacked lucidity (composure) inside the box. Even after they scored we had opportunities but we need to work on being calmer in those situations.”

New Stellenbosch FC signing Bradley Grobler has set his sights on winning silverware with the club after making the move to the Cape Winelands.

Grobler arrives at the club as a free agent after he parted ways with Sekhukhune United.

The 38-year-old will now reunite with former Matsatsantsa coach Gavin Hunt in Stellenbosch.

The experienced striker believes Stellenbosch have the quality and ambition to compete for trophies and is eager to play his part in helping the club achieve its goals.

“It feels amazing to be at Stellenbosch FC. This is a club that I’ve always admired for the way it is run and the players it has produced over the years.

“It’s a club I probably should have considered joining a long time ago. Arriving here, meeting everyone, and getting an understanding of what the Club is about have made it an easy decision.

“There’s a lot of potential here in Stellenbosch. When you look at the players that have signed and combine it with the youngsters coming through, it becomes a very exciting opportunity.”

He added: “It also certainly helps when you’ve worked with the coach before, and I’ve worked with Coach Gavin a few times in my career, and we’ve always worked well together.

“But it’s not only him. The people around and involved in the Club have all made me feel like I’ve been here for years already.

“I’m someone who has always taken pride in what I do, and when a club shows interest in me the way Stellenbosch has, I want to make them proud and give the fans something to celebrate.

“This is a team that I believe can compete for trophies. For me personally, nearing the end of my career, I’d also love to win more silverware, and I believe we can do that together.

“The Club is ambitious, and the coach is ambitious, so I just want to come in and add as much value as I can,” he concluded.

New Kaizer Chiefs signing Faiz Abrahams has expressed his excitement after completing his move to the Soweto giants, describing the opportunity to join one of Africa’s biggest clubs as a major honour.

The 21-year-old joins Kaizer Chiefs on a season-long loan from fellow Betway Premiership side Stellenbosch FC.

Abrahams made five senior appearances last season, with those outings coming either side of a loan spell at Israeli club Hapoel Kfar Saba.

The winger becomes Chiefs’ fifth signing of the campaign as Amakhosi to bolster their squad for the 2026-27 season.

The young midfielder is particularly drawn to Amakhosi’s rich history and their reputation for giving talented youngsters a chance to establish themselves at the highest level.

“I am very happy to join Kaizer Chiefs,” Abrahams told his club’s official website.

“It is an honour to be here at one of the biggest clubs in Africa.

“They have won a lot of trophies and what attracted me most is that they have a history of giving opportunities to young players.”
