Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Arthur Zwane believes his side were unlucky and lamented their missed opportunities against Royal AM at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday.
A first half penaly from in-form striker Victor Letsaolo proved the difference as he earned his side a narrow 1-0 victory over Amakhosi to do the double over the Soweto giants in the DStv Premiership.
The results saw John Maduka’s side leapfrogged Chiefs in second place in the league standing with 26 points, while Chiefs dropped down to fourth place with 25 points after 17 games.
“I think first 15 minutes to 25 minutes we were on top of them,” Zwane told SuperSport TV after the game.
“It looked like we could score at any given time but we couldn’t take the chance that hit the upright. I believe if we had scored that one it could have given us the advantage with the fact that we were already in control and it could have been a different story going into half-time.
“I think we started slow second-half. Obviously, we were then chasing the game we would try and add attacking players because we knew that they would want to lock the game and they are a team that wants to play and also have equally good players that can quickly go forward in terms of their counter-attacks. But we did not give them the space they wanted most of the time and they ended up giving the ball away cheaply which is what we wanted them to do.
“We were just unfortunate to not take the few chances that we created in the game. I believe we had another one where Castro could have done better. Another one first-half with Keagan. So ja we created a few although some of them were half-chances but if you can play against a team like this and still be able to dominate them. It’s a work in progress.
“You could even see the impact of having not been training. Energy levels started dropping and our final third entry was not clear because of the distances that we had to cover. I think the boys gave their best. We were just unfortunate that we lost the game on a penalty. In open play I think we were by far a better team. Tough luck to the boys. Congrats to Royal AM. The fact that they scored from the penalty spot, they collected maximum points. It’s a good thing for them.”
