Suryakumar Yadav’s 59 off 39 balls helped the Mumbai Indians post a target of 181 which they defended against the Kolkata Knight Riders despite a Robin Uthappa half-century.
The Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and their decision to bowl first backfired against them.
The visitors got off to a good start through Yadav and Evin Lewis, who racked up 91 for the first wicket. Lewis contributed 43 off 28 balls before losing his scalp to Andre Russell.
Yadav went on to reach his third half-century of the campaign but was the third wicket to fall after Sunil Narine dismissed Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma on 11.
Yadav was the next to go – Russell (2-12) picking up his second – with MI reduced to 3-127. Narine (2-35) picked up his second when he dismissed the dangerous Krunal Pandya as the hosts passed the 150-run mark.
Hardik Pandya (35 off 20) and JP Duminy (13 off 11 balls) scored 23 off the final two overs as the Mumbai Indians posted 181-4.
The Kolkata Knight Riders had a rocky chase after losing big-hitter Chris Lynn (17 off 13) and Shubman Gill (7) in quick succession; they then found themselves on 28-2 after three overs.
Uthappa rode his luck after being dropped on four by Mayank Markande and went on to score 54 off 35 balls – containing six fours and one six – but was dismissed by the man who dropped him in the 13th over. Nitish Rana followed suit: he lost his wicket to purple cap holder Hardik (2-19) on 31 and KKR were reduced to 115-4 in the 14th over.
Russell only contributed nine before his dismissal, with Jasprit Bumrah (1-32) picking up his first wicket of the game as KKR’s chase started to slip away from them.
Needing 43 off the last three overs, Dinesh Karthik batted excellently to get his side within 23 runs of victory in the final over. Narine hit a boundary on the first delivery but lost his scalp to Krunal (1-29) the following ball, and their chance slipped away from them.
Karthik ended the match on 36 off 26 balls, as the Mumbai Indians claimed a 13-run win.
