SAFA made the announcement of Mosimane’s appointment in a press conference held at the SAFA’s headquarters in Nasrec.

Mosimane was previously at the held of South Africa between 2010 and 2012 after the departure of Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.

The changes to the match-23 will see the front row of Ox Nche, Wilco Louw (both props) and Malcolm Marx (hooker) return to the starting team, with Gerhard Steenekamp, Thomas du Toit and Deon Fourie switching to the replacements bench, while an injury-enforced change to versatile back Damian Willemse sees Cheslin Kolbe switch to fullback and Kurt-Lee Arendse being drafted onto the wing in the starting team.

“It was always our plan to have a little more continuity in player combinations for this series and we thought that the players who did the job for us last week really showed composure and did well to stick to the plan and what we wanted to achieve last week,” said Erasmus.

“Unfortunately, Damian Willemse took a knock in the first half and was not available for selection this weekend, and neither was Handre Pollard, and by sticking to these combinations and making one switch with Cheslin at fullback, we thought it would be the best for this match.

“Kurt-Lee was unlucky not to play last week after Cheslin recovered from his niggle, so we are pleased to see him back. He is a quality player and his 25 tries in 33 matches so far shows the type of player he is.”

Erasmus expected the All Blacks to come out firing this weekend, saying they would have the same desperation to fight back after the Boks’ 33-26 victory, saw the teams draw the series with two matches to play.

“We know how it felt after the first match in Johannesburg, and such a result really galvanises a team, so we have no doubt that they will go full-out to win this Test match before the series finale in the USA next week,” said Erasmus.

“They are one of the two best teams in the world and based on experience, they never give up, as we saw last weekend, so this will undoubtedly be another epic encounter between the sides.

“After two games, we are both into hard Test rugby mode, and we have a good idea of what to expect from one another, so it is going to be another grind of a match.”

Of the decision to switch his front rows and reverting to the original starting front row he announced last week, Erasmus said: “We decided to change our front rows last week due to the weather conditions, and Johannesburg weather is different to Cape Town, so we thought this would be the best decision for us this weekend.

“Gerhard, Thomas, and Deon have played massive games for us, and at the same time know how to deal with pressure, and that is exactly what we need against a never-say-die team like the All Blacks, who play for the full 80-minutes.”

Zooming into the match, Erasmus said: “This game is going to be equally, if not more intense than the last two given the fact that the team that wins this match will be two games up in the series, which will make the clash in the USA the decider or game that could see the series finish in a draw, so there will be a different vibe around this match.

“We are excited that we will be playing at the FNB stadium, where on a good day there is an 80 000 strong crowd, and that will be a new and exciting experience for our players because most of these players have never ran onto the field there, and the support we enjoy there will add to the occasion.

“With the vuvuzelas and passionate crowd there, we can hardly hear one another on the field, so we are all thrilled about this occasion. But make no mistake, this is going to be another intense battle between the two top teams in the world who are both looking to get an edge in the series, so we know what we have to do, and composure and accuracy are going to be vital for both sides.”

The Brazilians advanced to the MTN8 final after they secured a 3-3 aggregate win on away goals against Arrows at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.

Sundowns will now prepare to face off against Orlando Pirates in what is expected to be a mouth-watering final.

The Portuguese coach highlighted the team’s positive mindset, patience in possession and ability to capitalise on key moments.

“It’s not easy here to win 4-2, today we made a fantastic, beautiful result,” Cardoso told SuperSport TV after the game.

“Four goals scored so fantastic, fantastic anyway we know what we had to do – the first goal will be very emotional positive, we knew that we had to circulate a lot the ball until we find the way there and from there the drop in energy on Arrows will happen.

“Also, we knew the second goal would kill the game but make it very difficult than the away goals will not be on our other side and we worked on that of course.”

It is the dream final for the sponsors as Sundowns sealed their place on the away goals rule as the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.
Here are the talking points from the match.

What. A. Goal
Sundowns levelled the tie just past the half-hour mark with a goal of exquisite beauty.
It was superb one-touch play between goalscorer Cassius Mailula and Marcelo Allende that set up the former to pass the ball into the back of the net and score his fourth goal in seven appearances (four starts) since his return to Chloorkop.
He is such a calm finisher. While others might have tried to blast the ball, Mailula simply picked his spot and coolly placed it there.

Arrows finally concede
The goal was the first Golden Arrows have conceded in almost 1,000 minutes of football, or more than 16 hours.
The last player to score against them was AmaZulu’s Sandile Mthethwa in a 1-1 draw back on May 6.
It had been nine clean sheets in a row since, a remarkable show of consistency at the back, and it took a truly extraordinary goal to finally break through.

Goal disallowed
Sundowns were perhaps unfortunate not to go 2-0 up when Khulumani Ndamane appeared to steer the ball over the line with his chest.
Referee Luxolo Badi and his officials decided it was handball, but replays did not back that up and The Brazilians could feel aggrieved.
Ndamane was incensed and received a booking for his protests, but you could understand his disappointment. VAR anyone?

Red card … or not
Sundowns looked as though they were reduced to 10 men when defender Grant Kekana was shown a red card by referee Badi, who thought he had already been booked.
Badi showed the Sundowns man a yellow for a tackle and then flashed a red, thinking it was a second booking, but soon afterwards realised his mistake.
He rescinded the red and Kekana stayed on the pitch.

Dion scores again
Soon after that drama, Arrows were level on the day and ahead in the tie when Sede Dion scored.
He was fed from the right by Ronaldo Van Neel and fired into the net from five yards, though his rising shot went in off the underside of the crossbar. It was close to a huge miss.
It was a third goal in as many games for the Ivorian, who was last year’s Betway Premiership Golden Boot winner with 14 goals, having scored last weekend against Sundowns in the first leg and in midweek in the victory over Stellenbosch FC.

Allende on target
Sundowns needed a goal and their Chilean midfielder Allende provided it with 13 minutes remaining.
The ball broke to him in the box and he drilled it in from an angle for his first of the season to book Sundowns’ place in the final.
Allende probably should score more given his quality, but does tend to come up with important goals when Sundowns most need them.

Keeper howler
Sundowns added a third through new signing Antonio van Wyk but Golden Arrows keeper Thakasani Mbanjwa will take the blame.
Van Wyk’s shot from outside the box was just to his right but the ball bounced over his attempt to save and into the net.
It should have been a comfortable save, but in the end the incessant pressure from The Brazilians paid off.

Late drama
There was still late drama as Golden Arrows won possession 40 yards from goal and when Philani Kumalo was played in, he slipped the ball past Ronwen Williams in the visitors’ goal.
The Golden Arrows players celebrated the goal as if they had all day, as coach Pitso Dladla urged them to restart, still needing a goal.
It is as if they were not aware that away goals would decide the tie and not penalties with the scores level.

Pirates are seeking a fifth title in a row in a competition they have dominated since 2020, and will face either Mamelodi Sundowns or Lamontville Golden Arrows in the decider. Those two play in Durban on Sunday with Abafana Bes’thende holding a surprise 1-0 lead from the first leg.

Pirates took the lead against Sekhukhune on 37 minutes having had several other opportunities and it was a youngster who netted for them.

Thapelo Mokobodi only arrived at the club last month from Stellenbosch FC but impressed and scored with a side-footed finish as he latched onto a pass from Yanela Mbuthuma.

It was his first goal as a professional since he scored for Marumo Gallants against Black Leopards in the Motsepe Foundation Championship in May 2024.

It was 2-0 just two minutes later when the in-form Gamphani Lungu was fed by Mbuthuma again following a lightning quick break and scored his third goal in six games to go with some notable assists.

Pirates have now not lost an MTN8 semi-final tie since 2012. Since 2020, they have lost only two of their 24 MTN8 matches, and one of those did not matter in the end.

They were beaten 2-1 at home by Moroka Swallows in the quarter-finals in 2021 in a surprise result and lost 1-0 on their own patch to Stellenbosch FC in 2023 in the second leg of a semi-final tie, but still advanced on the away-goals rule.

For the rest, they have 17 wins and five draws in that time.
They have also extended their unbeaten run at the start of the season to seven matches (W6 D1). Pirates have scored 13 goals and conceded two.

After winning their opening two league games against Kruger United and Sekhukhune United, Chiefs were held at home by Mamelodi Sundowns and then away in Durban in the fourth game of their campaign.

They have eight points, trailing defending champions Orlando Pirates and Sundowns, who have 10.

“We’re disappointed because our team attacked during all of the 90 minutes and the other team defended for 90 minutes,” Da Cruz asserted after Chiefs were twice forced to come from behind.

“But we made two big mistakes and so we got one point today when normally it should be three points. I was disappointed at the nature of the goals that we conceded.”

The first was another goalkeeping howler from Brandon Petersen, caught trying to clear a back pass inside the opening 10 minutes, and the second came from a corner before halftime. Both were netted by Nxeba Xulu, Richards Bay’s new striker.

“Now we have eight points (from four matches), but we should really have 12 points because against Sundowns also we made a mistake,” Da Cruz added.

“So we need to learn from our mistakes and to continue to work hard, to look forward.

“I have two different feelings about the game. I’m very disappointed but also happy about the performance of the team, because the team played well. But we cannot make these types of mistakes at this level.”

Da Cruz used all five of his substitutes with 15 minutes still to play.

“The idea was to put on fresh players and speed also, because players that started the game were a little bit tired. But I’m happy about the mindset and the performance of players who came on.”

The most important correction was the coach’s name: Fernando da Cruz, not “Fernanda da Cruz”. I also fixed the missing comma in the headline, “if it was not” to “if it were not”, “all five his substitutes” to “all five of his substitutes”, the comma splice before the final quote, and clarified that the second goal “came from a corner.”

Namibia batted first and posted 163 for nine in their 20 overs, before restricting the visitors to 145 for nine in reply.

The result makes it two wins from two for Namibia against their neighbours having won the first T20 clash between the sides last October, also in Windhoek.

Namibia’s innings was anchored by a superb 60 from 38 balls by Jan Frylink, who put on an opening stand of 84 with Louren Steenkamp (41 from 29 balls).

At one stage 200 looked on for the home side, but they managed only 41 runs from the final 35 balls of the innings as South Africa bowled well at the death.

Spinners Bjorn Fortuin (2-17) and Prenelan Subrayen (3-32) were the pick with their four overs.

South Africa struggled from the start of their reply and when Brevis fell for a well played 75 from 50 balls, which included five sixes, their chances of winning the game diminished.

South Africa, who have rested the majority of their regular players, meet Zimbabwe in the second Tri-Series fixture at the same venue on Saturday.

Flyhalf Feinberg-Mngomezulu played in the 33-16 loss to the All Blacks in Johannesburg last weekend but was dropped to the bench to accommodate the experienced Pollard.

The latter has been forced to pull out with a calf strain though and Feinberg-Mngomezulu is elevated to start, with Manie Libbok named among the replacements.

Wing Kolbe was originally not in the team that was named on Monday after leaving the field with a knock in Johannesburg, but has been declared fit enough to play. Arendse drops out of the match-day 23 altogether.

The clash in Cape Town is the second of four tests in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series and will be followed on consecutive weekends by matches in Johannesburg and Baltimore in the United States.
