On this day back in November 2016: A clinical SuperSport United punished Orlando Pirates 6-1 in their Absa Premiership clash at the Mbombela Stadium.

It was Pirates who opened the scoring when Tendai Ndoro slotted the ball home after a first-time cross from Rakhale on the right.

Just when Pirates started to get comfortable in possession Reinelwe Letsholonyane smashed home the 52nd-minute equaliser past Brighton Mhlongo at the near post.

Two minutes later Letsholonyane turned provider as he drilled a cross towards Michael Boxall, who found the back of the net from close range.

A mistake from Mhlongo gifted United their third in the 56th minute when he palmed a free-kick straight into a group of SuperSport players, resulting in Boxall slotting the ball home for his second.

United scored their fourth goal shortly after the half-hour mark when Thuso Phala pounced on an effort from Mhlongo to fire the back into the net.

Phala then turned provider in the 74th minute when he picked out Bradley Grobler, who fired his strike beyond Mhlongo to make it 5-1.

United piled the misery on Pirates in the 88th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Jeremy Brockie stepped up and made no mistake from the spot-kick.

Pirates had a chance to redeem themselves late in the game when they were awarded a penalty of their out, but Ndoro failed to bypass Ronwen Williams as he denied the Buccaneers a consolation goal.

Goals by Peter Shalulile and Tendai Ndoro saw Highlands Park secure a 2-0 victory against Cape Town City, writes MARSHALL GOUTS.

Benni McCarthy’s side went into the clash on the back of a victory against Polokwane City, which saw them extend their winning streak to three consecutive games in the Absa Premiership.

The clash got off to a slow start with neither side willing to commit too many numbers forward in the early exchanges.

A fierce midfield battle ensued with the City trio of Roland Putsche, Thabo Nodada and Teko Modise on the end of a number of bone-crunching tackles from the opposition.

The home side were content
on getting their squad behind the ball and playing on the counter-attack which resulted in a first-half with little goal mouth action.

McCarthy signaled intent for maximum points as he introduced the pacy Craig Martin who replaced the Patosi.

Highlands Park broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart of the second-half as Peter Shalulile reacted quickest to head home Mbatha’s ball into the area.

McCarthy responded with another change as Teko Modise made way for Gift Links in the 70th minute.

The visitors became impatient in their bud to find the equaliser and were reduced to long-range efforts in frustration.

The Citizens opted for their final change of the game as Allan Katterega was brought on for Siphelele Mthembu with minutes left in the clash.

Highlands Park doubled their lead and put the game to bed in the 83rd minute when former Orlando Pirates striker Tendai Ndoro opened his account for his new club to secure a hard-fought 2-0 victory and put and end to City’s unbeaten streak in the Absa Premiership.

After signing for Highlands Park, Tendai Ndoro will be looking to put the recent Ajax Cape Town ordeal behind him and it could all start with the clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

The 33-year-old found himself at the centre of one of South African football’s biggest sagas in recent years.

The player’s ineligibility to play for Ajax saw the club plunged into a bitter legal battle over the registration of Ndoro‚ who already turned out for two other clubs in that season and was thus not allowed to play for a third as per Fifa’s rules.

Ajax lost the drawn-out court battle, which went back and forth as the PSL and Ajax fought their respective claims and the Cape Town-based club were eventually docked nine points and relegated in what infamously became known as #NdoroGate.

Ndoro was brought to Ajax by his former coach at Orlando Pirates, Muhsin Ertugral, who was hoping the forward could fire them to safety.

The striker, however, only managed one goal in six starts in both league and cup competitions with Ajax eventually sidelining him and then letting him go after just six months.

The Zimbabwean striker is now back in the Absa Premiership after signing with the Lions of the North and it is thought that he could make his debut for the newly promoted club on Tuesday as Owen Da Gama’s team host Kaizer Chiefs.

Ndoro will be hoping to redeem himself in South Africa’s top flight after reportedly having struggled with psychological issues after what happened last season.

Highlands Park coach Owen Da Gama has revealed that former Orlando Pirates duo Issa Sarr and Tendai Ndoro are training with the club as they look at the possibility of signing the duo.

Both players are currently without a club following Sarr’s release from Pirates and Ndoro’s contract cancellation at Ajax Cape Town following the now infamous Ndoro-gate saga which saw Ajax relegated from the Absa Premiership last season.

READ: Pitso defends Pieterse after Sundowns debut error

Speaking to the media after beating Golden Arrows 2-1 at Makhulong Stadium on Sunday, Da Gama revealed that the duo are currently training with the club and while he has made his recommendations to the club’s management, it is now up to them to finalise any potential deals.

‘Issa Sarr is training with us currently. We don’t want this to be heard from the street.

‘We want it to be heard from us. We are trying to bring a little bit of experience to help us. As you know, we brought the bulk of NFD players [up to the PSL] and we had to give them a chance,’ he added.

‘He [Sarr] started on Thursday and we are allowing him to settle in, and there are also negotiations going on.

‘The nice thing about him is that he’s got his papers [permanent South African residence] now. He is a South African and that makes it a little bit easier. We can recommend but the final decision is with the management.’

Da Gama also provided an update on striker Ndoro’s situation at Highlands.

‘Tendai has been training with the team. You know he is a big player, there is no doubt about it. But big players come with a big prize. It is now between the management and his agent. We will see what happens, but I like him.

‘Every player has a price. We will wait for the situation [to unfold] but I’m pretty sure that a decision will be made either way.

‘He is a player that can score goals and with his experience, he will certainly help us,’ concluded last season’s NFD-winning coach.

Kaizer Chiefs landed the marquee signing of Khama Billiat from Mamelodi Sundowns, but they will need more than the former PSL Footballer of the Year to mount a serious title bid, writes MARSHALL GOUTS.

The Soweto giants have made a bit of progress ahead of the start of the 2018-19 Absa Premiership season, with the appointment of coach Giovanni Solinas as well as the acquisitions of Billiat, Virgil Vries, Andriamirado ‘Dax’ Andrianarimanana and Letlhogonolo Mirwa.

ALSO READ: Five players Chiefs could with (Part 1)

Chiefs also lost out on a number of reported transfer targets, with Mamelodi Sundowns snapping up Andile Jali, Mosa Lebusa and Lebohang Maboe, while winger Vincent Pule joined arch-rivals Orlando Pirates despite media reports that he’d signed a pre-contract with the Naturena-based outfit last season.

With the transfer window officially closing 31 August, there are a number of players which the club could still secure in their bid to bolster their squad.

ALSO READ: Why I joined Chiefs instead of going abroad – Billiat

Less than five games into the 2018-19 PSL season and Amakhosi coach Solinas is already citing fatigue as an excuse for results not going in their favour. A 3-1 defeat to former champions Bidvest Wits, coupled with rather blunt showings in stalemates against Baroka and Maritzburg United leaves one to ask the question:

Do Chiefs have enough quality within their ranks as things stand?

ALSO READ: Why Orlando Pirates will win the league title

Unless mediocrity has become acceptable, Chiefs could look to bolster their squad ahead with one or more of the following signings:

1) Lebogang Manyama:

The former PSL Footballer of the Year is no stranger to the South African top-flight, having plied his trade for Ajax Cape Town, SuperSport United and most recently Cape Town City.

Manyama’s dream move abroad to Turkish side Konyaspor didn’t go according to plan with the 27-year-old being handed his clearance approximately a year after joining the club.

The attacking midfielder is not only creative in the final third, but he boasts a keen eye for goal and could be the perfect go-to-guy for Chiefs to complete an attacking trio consisting of Billiat, Leonardo Castro and Manyama.

ALSO READ: CT City keen on Manyama return

2) Grant Margeman

With the decline of Willard Katsande seemingly in full swing, Chiefs desperately need a long-term replacement for the defensive midfielder.

Margeman displayed his sound technical ability for Ajax Cape Town, showing maturity beyond his years. He was part of the Amajita team that did duty at the U20 World Cup and was also included in Stuart Baxter’s provisional 34-man Cosafa Cup squad.

Forms part of a rare breed of midfielders in the PSL, who can excel at playing anywhere in the central midfield. His passing range and ability to keep it simple and get stuck in are arguably his best qualities.

ALSO READ: Dax – The final piece to Chiefs’ puzzle?

3) Phakamani Mahlambi

The former PSL Young Player of the Year completed a move to Al Ahly in September last year, but failed to establish himself as a regular in the team, having made 12 appearances for the Egyptian giants, scoring once and notching up five assists.

He was poised for an exit from the Egyptian giants after he handed in his transfer request, with the Bafana Bafana starlet’s agent confirming that he was forced to train on his own. Mahlambi recently returned to training, however, it remains to be seen whether his fortunes will change.

The Red Devils slapped a €2-million price-tag on the 20-year-old and if Chiefs are willing to fork out the big bucks, they would certainly be getting a game-changer. Mahlambi is devastatingly good in the final third and can inject some much needed quality and pace into Solinas’ team.

ALSO READ: Tau gets off to winning start in Belgium

4) Tendai Ndoro:

The former Orlando Pirates star was spotted training with newly-promoted side Highlands Park, following the now infamous Ndoro-gate which led to the relegation of Ajax Cape Town for ineligibly fielding the forward.

Chiefs look far from the finish product, especially in the final third and snapping up the Zimbabwean forward could go a long way in helping marquee-signing Billiat settle in at the club (Billiat and Ndoro are teammates for the Zimbabwean national team)

Amakhosi are also short of varied options in attack having sent development products Emmanuel Letlotlo and Yusuf Bunting out on loan to Baroka and The Lions of the North respectively, with young Ryan Moon seemingly third choice behind South American strikers Gustavo Paez and Castro.

This move could help both parties restore their ailing names in the eyes of South African supporters.

5) Lehlogonolo Masalesa:

Following an unfruitful spell in Greece, the former Orlando Pirates midfielder returned home and signed for Platinum Stars. His downward spiral continued as the club got relegated from the PSL.

Only 26-years-old, ‘Viera’ boasts continental experience from his days with the Buccanneers and could do the job at the club given defensive midfielder Katsande’s tendency to blow hot and cold on any given day.

He recently parted ways with Stars after their drop to the NFD, with a number of PSL teams said to be vying for his signature.

This comes after the Urban Warriors’ decision to withdraw their bid to interdict the 2018-19 Premier Soccer League (PSL) start.

Ajax CT CEO Ari Efstathiou said that the Dutch giants are ‘extremely disappointed’ by the ‘Ndorogate’ saga and are reconsidering their options of continuing their relationship with the Mother City-based outfit.

‘They are extremely disappointed‚’ Efstathiou told theSowetan.

‘They are backing the club in the NFD but they are considering their options and that’s understandable.’

Efstathiou said that he was not pleased with the way the situation was handled, stating that it should have taken a week to settle – instead, it took five months.

‘They are extremely disappointed with what has happened and the results of the court cases‚’ he added.

‘I don’t think it reflects very well on South African football that a matter takes five months to come to a situation like this and even worse‚ that the league actually finished before the ruling against us came out.

‘It was a process that was delayed and who can [blame] them‚ sitting on the outside looking in‚ being perplexed because legal issues in all the other associations usually take no longer than a week to settle while we have been at it for five months.’

The club’s CEO added that their parent club were well aware of the legal manoeuvring and have backed the club throughout the process.

‘From the first step that we took‚ we have been discussing it with them so they were very aware of it.

‘They‚ obviously‚ followed the process and they were completely behind what we agreed to do‚’ Efstathiou concluded.

Ajax Cape Town will take on Jomo Cosmos in their opening National First Division encounter at the Vosloorus Stadium on Sunday, with kick-off set for 3pm.

Following their decision to withdraw their bid to stop the new Absa Premiership season, Ajax Cape Town have accepted their relegation to the National First Division after fielding an ineligible player.

READ: Fielies on the ‘Benni’ effect

The Urban Warriors’ CEO Ari Efstathiou held a press conference at Ikamva on Friday afternoon to announce the club’s decision.

The Mother City-based outfit withdrew their application to interdict the start of the 2018-19 campaign on Thursday.

This came after the Premier Soccer League (PSL) had been granted leave to appeal the High Court decision to set aside the judgement of advocate William Mokhari against Ajax.

Mokhari had ruled that the Urban Warriors should be docked points for fielding an ineligible player in striker Tendai Ndoro, which effectively consigned Ajax’s relegation to the NFD.

ALSO READ: Chiefs confirm Mashaba interest

Speaking to the media, Efstathiou said: ‘I didn’t want to make a comment after yesterday because I thought it would be important to come to you with our thoughts.

‘On the club’s side, unfortunately, once again, we have seen a lot of situations like this. Time and legal procedure have basically trumped justice and we feel very strongly about that.

‘We still believe we followed the rules. We played him when we were supposed to play him. Unfortunately, the process got complicated.

‘We ended up with seven court appearances. It is a process that went on for five months. We have been at the top and bottom of the rollercoaster. Yesterday was unfortunate where the time issue of the league and the way the court process went.

‘And now we are forced to take our place in the NFD unless something happens during the appeal process, but the process can take anything from four to 12 weeks.

‘But we did fight for the truth and what we believe was right,’ Efstathiou concluded.

ALSO READ: MTN8 fixtures confirmed amid Ajax saga

Meanwhile, Ajax’s lawyer, advocate Norman Arendse, insisted that Judge Denise Fisher’s decision to grant the PSL leave to appeal on Thursday forced the club to withdraw their interdict.

‘When Fisher allowed the appeal against her judgement‚ that immediately affected our chances of the interdict. We would have had little chance‚’ Arendse said.

‘The interdict was designed to have playoffs replayed‚ but that was always going to be a difficult ask.

‘If we argued a losing case, we could have had harsh costs ordered against us. In light of that‚ Ari took a difficult and emotional decision‚ but the right one‚ to withdraw,’ he concluded.
