Martin Vorster retained his lead heading into the weekend of the DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB at the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate, and with a very clear focus of how to approach his quest for a maiden Sunshine Tour title.

On a slightly more tricky day thanks to the wind, Vorster signed for a second round of 67 that ended with an eagle two on the par-four 18th to lead on 14 under par overall.

His nearest challenger is Zimbabwe’s Benjamin Follett-Smith on 13 under par after he equalled the course record with his 63. And Jaco Prinsloo is currently third just two shots off the lead.

Vorster has had a magnificently consistent season that has brought him to this final tournament still hunting a victory.

But he’s determined to head into the final 36 holes of the 2025/26 season with a different focus as he looks to break through.

“I want to win with everything in me. But I think it’s important to phrase that I would like to win, and not I must win. If I can control my controllables really well, that’s all I can do. I can’t control what anybody else does around me. I’m just going to give it my best,” he said.

Vorster will take confidence from having retained his lead in the face of tougher conditions and the charge from Follett-Smith.

“It was definitely much harder out there. Benjamin’s 63 is unbelievable because of the wind and a few tougher flag positions. My goal today was just to try and stick to my routines and commit to my shots. It’s nice to add up the score and see that I’m in the lead.”

Follett-Smith missed a makeable birdie putt on the last for a course record at the end of a day of birdies for him.

“My girlfriend was walking with me and she kept saying, ‘Birdie again. Birdie again’. It was going well.

Overall it was a lot of good shots that paid off. The goal is to win, but it’s also been nice to be here in the winelands. We’re staying on a nice wine farm and it’s good to finish your round and get your mind off golf a bit.”

The Sunshine Tour recognised some of the standout performances from its professionals at its 2025/26 Sunshine Tour Season Awards held at the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate on Wednesday evening.

Amongst the notable awards of the evening, Casey Jarvis received the prestigious Commissioner’s Award in recognition of his outstanding performances in winning three times on the Sunshine Tour – including the DP World Tour co-sanctioned Investec South African Open – and a further victory on the DP World Tour alone. He also finished second in the Joburg Open.

“The Commissioner’s Award is in recognition of the player who broke through and just kept on achieving. Casey did exactly this over the season. He’s a wonderful young talent and we wish him all the best as he now looks forward to playing the Majors as well,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.

Herman Loubser won the Players’ Player of the Year Award, while Shaun Norris was honoured with the Sportsman of the Year Award, and Hennie Otto received the Executive Director’s Award for his longevity on the Sunshine Tour.

Loubser was recognised by his fellow professionals for a season in which he won on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series and had a further four top-five finishes in what has been his most successful season on the Tour.

“I wasn’t expecting this. When other players vote for you and they recognise how much work it takes and how hard it is to perform, it really is special to receive that,” he said.

Norris received the Sportsman of the Year Award for his act of sportsmanship during his playoff with Jayden Schaper in December’s Alfred Dunhill Championship, when he applauded Schaper’s brilliant fairway bunker shot onto the green in the playoff.

“We all strive to win tournaments, and here was a youngster with all the talent in the world who had a wonderful year leading up to that event. It’s hard to win, so for him in that position, to pull off a shot like that, I just felt it deserved an applause. I was amazed by the shot, so I just felt like congratulating him for even pulling it off, and then making the putt on top of it. He did everything correctly and he pulled it off, so for me it was just a case of knowing what it feels like to go through that and to try and win a tournament, which is not easy. I was very happy for him to pull that off,” said Norris.

Otto was recognised for his incredible longevity in a career that started on the Sunshine Tour in 1999 and which has seen him win multiple titles here and on the DP World Tour.

“The Sunshine Tour gave me opportunities and from there I was able to play on the HotelPlanner Tour and DP World Tour. I want to thank the Tour for where I am now. And to the younger professionals, I’d like to say please realise the opportunities you get through the Sunshine Tour to achieve your higher goals in the game,” said Otto.

In other awards, Daniel van Tonder received the Best Finish to Win Award for his phenomenal closing stretch of two birdies and an eagle to win the Serengeti Playoffs on the Courier Guy Playoffs series.
Haydn Porteous received the Comeback Player of the Year Award for winning on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series this season, his first victory on the Sunshine Tour since 2016.

And Kyle Barker received both the Media Choice Award, recognising the player who created the most engagement in promoting the Tour, and the Tour Style Award, voted by the players and recognising the individual who stood out for his overall presence on and off the golf course.

Reflecting on the significance of the awards, Abt said: “This was a wonderful celebration of our Tour and our players. We run a big Tour with roughly 30 events on our schedule, and this is a moment for the players to look back and realise they’ve done well this season.”

German professional Allen John is on track for his maiden Sunshine Tour title as he heads into Sunday’s final round of The Serengeti Playoffs with a two-stroke lead, in the first tournament of The Courier Guy Playoffs.

John signed for a 70 at Serengeti Estates on Saturday to lead on 15 under par. Jaco Prinsloo is his nearest challenger on 13 under par after finishing his round strong with three consecutive birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to sign for a 68.

Daniel van Tonder (71) and Wilco Nienaber (68) are in joint third place on 12 under par.

John had a slow but steady start to his round. He turned in level par and then made two key birdies on the back nine to claim the lead.

“It feels nice. It was a bit of a weird day today. I have almost hit every green, but I just could not make any putts. Maybe tomorrow I am going to drop a few more,” he said.

John, currently in his rookie season on the Sunshine Tour, has enjoyed every minute of The Courier Guy Playoffs on the Tour.

“We had a lot of fun over the last three days and the format is very nice. It gives us some time in between shots to have fun. Overall, we had a very good day.”

The German said he is looking forward to the final round, with his game currently in a good place
“I haven’t changed anything really over the last five to six weeks. I’ve just been trying to keep going and knocking on the door. Here we are, and we will see what happens tomorrow,” John said.

With two tournaments to go, the Sunshine Tour’s 2025-26 season is far from over. In fact, it’s now only starting to get real in terms of opportunity.

The Courier Guy Playoffs brings together the leading available professionals on the Sunshine Tour Courier Guy Order of Merit for a two-tournament showdown – The Serengeti Playoffs and the DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB.

This week’s Serengeti Playoffs at Serengeti Estates offers 3 000 points, while the DNi Tour Championship at De Zalze Golf Club at the end of March offers 5 000 points.

At Serengeti this week, the top 60 available professionals on the current Courier Guy Order of Merit are in the field for this 72-hole, no halfway cut showpiece. They’re playing for the right to be amongst the top 50 professionals on the Courier Guy Order of Merit who qualify for the DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB.

These two events will end the season. But at the same time, they’ll open up a world of opportunity for the top performers as part of the Sunshine Tour’s global pathway via the HotelPlanner Tour and DP World Tour.

The winner of the Courier Guy Order of Merit earns a place in the Nedbank Golf Challenge in honour of Gary Player and two Majors, namely The PGA Championship and The Open.

The leading player in the top 10 of the final Courier Guy Order of Merit who doesn’t already have status on the DP World Tour will earn a card for next season. The next two leading players will receive cards on the HotelPlanner Tour for next season.

There are also a host of cash incentives to play for over these next two tournaments.

Apart from the individual tournament prize funds, the leading three players on the final Courier Guy Order of Merit will receive R500 000 (first place), R200 000 (second place) and R100 000 (third place) respectively.

The winner of the Courier Guy Order of Merit will receive an MSC international cruise, while players finishing second and third will each receive a five-day, four-night local cruise.

And the top three Sunshine Tour professionals from the final Courier Guy Order of Merit will win a Hyundai for a year.

The end of the season will also see the crowning of the Fortress Rookie of the Year, with the top player here earning a R400 000 bonus.

And both the winner of the Courier Guy Order of Merit and Fortress Rookie of the Year will receive automatic entry into the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions supported by Attacq and WCMC in June this year, where they will compete for a first prize of R1 million.

This Sunshine Tour season is far from over.

A world of golf opportunity is about to tee off.

Jarvis signed for a third round of 64 to claim a one-stroke lead on 11 under par. His nearest challengers are fellow South African Hennie du Plessis, who signed for a 67, and Italian Francesco Laporta, who posted a 70, on 10 under par.

Jarvis hit his second on the par-four 18th far right and into the hospitality before going on to hole a 23-footer for par that brought an almighty cheer from the crowd.

“It was such a cool moment. The home support is fantastic. I love playing here,” said the young South African, who is hunting back-to-back victories on the DP World Tour after winning in Kenya last week.

The incredible atmosphere on Saturday made an impact on all the players.

“The crowds definitely kept me going. It’s a pity not every event is like this. I’ve never experienced this before,” said Du Plessis.

And Laporta agreed. “The crowd was amazing. It was crazy.”

They needed every bit of that support on a day when this Stellenbosch Golf Club course again showed itself to be an incredibly fair test, and with a change in wind direction making it even harder.

“It wasn’t easy out there today. It’s not an easy course. I started slowly and was one under through seven holes, and everything changed when I chipped in on eight. Then I said, ‘Ok, let’s go’,” said Jarvis, who birdied four of his next five holes to begin his charge.

Jarvis has put aside the memories of his breakthrough DP World Tour victory last week and says he’s completely focused on the job at hand here in Stellenbosch.

“Right now I’m focused on winning this tournament. There are a lot of good players up on the leaderboard and I’m just trying to stay patient and we’ll see what happens.”

Behind him, Du Plessis feels a similar sense that he’s peaking at the right time in this championship.

“I’m in the mix and I’m up for it,” he said.

And Laporta is just as focused, with exemptions into The Masters and The Open up for grabs on Sunday.

“Sunday is a big day. I’m in contention and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Francesco Laporta calls South Africa his second home, and this weekend he is looking to become the first Italian winner of South Africa’s oldest professional golf tournament – the Investec South African Open.

Laporta took advantage of a windstill morning in the winelands on Friday and signed for a 64 to lead this championship on 10 under par. He is one shot clear of England’s Nathan Kimsey, who also posted his 65 on Friday morning.

Dean Burmester leads the South African challenge on eight under par following his second round of 67. And Hennie du Plessis proved just how good the morning conditions were for low scoring when he carded a course record 63 – confirmed by Stellenbosch Golf Club in light of their tee box changes for this championship and the enlarged water hazard on 18 – to climb into contention on seven under par.

Laporta spent several years living in Johannesburg and played on the Sunshine Tour before moving back to Italy, and he says his love for South Africa and its people has never left him.

“I like playing in South Africa. It’s been my second home for a long time. This course actually reminds me a lot more of the Johannesburg courses. It’s tough, the fairways are tight and there’s a lot of rough so you have to hit it straight. I like it. I’m looking forward to the weekend. I’m sure the fans will cheer for the South Africans. But South Africans are always fair and it’s always good to play in front of them,” said Laporta.

The closest an Italian has ever come to winning the Investec South African Open was Renato Paratore who finished tied second in 2023. Laporta is hoping his accuracy off the tee, which has been his strongpoint, continues on the weekend to give him a shot at making history.

“My tee shots were good. On this golf course if you hit your tee shots straight you have a lot of opportunities,” he said.

Just one shot behind him, Kimsey is equally excited about the opportunity that awaits for him on a huge weekend where an exemption into the 2026 Masters and exemptions for the top three finishers not already exempt into The Open are on offer.

“My game’s been good and I’m glad I could put myself in contention here,” he said.
At two shots off the lead, Burmester has a chance at a second Investec South African Open title after winning in 2023, even though he didn’t feel like he took full advantage of the calm Friday morning conditions.

“Considering how good the conditions were in the morning, the course was really gettable and I just didn’t feel like I had my best game with me. I’m proud of the way I hung in there because the driver misbehaved quite a bit. But we’ll see what the weekend holds.”

Even Du Plessis is making no secret of his intentions this weekend.

“I feel like my game has been trending for the last month or so, and I’ve focused all of my preparation on this incredible tournament.”

The chase for a place in Investec South African Open history is about to enter the final 36 holes.

The Sunshine Tour’s most widespread gathering of winners from across the South African game – the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions – is building to yet another impressive tournament when this showpiece event tees off at Royal Johannesburg’s famed East Course next season.

The 4-7 June 2026 tournament is positioned as a premium platform that recognises achievement, advances inclusivity, and supports the development of sport in South Africa as a catalyst for social and economic development.

Willie Vos, CEO of Waterfall City Management Company (WCMC), said: “We are very proud to be associated with the Sunshine Tour for the third consecutive year, as our organisations share strong brand values. At Waterfall City, we are driven by passion, a commitment to excellence, and an innovative approach to everything we do, while always showing respect and care for the people we serve. These values are clearly reflected in the Sunshine Tour’s reputation for golf excellence, its progressive outlook, and its inclusive approach – particularly through its support of golfers with disabilities, which underscores a deep respect for the sport and its participants.”

Michael Clampett, Asset and Property Executive at Attacq, said the tournament reflects the company’s long-term vision for Waterfall City as more than a commercial destination. “Waterfall City was designed to be a place where business, lifestyle and community intersect. Supporting the Tournament of Champions allows us to invest in a platform that celebrates excellence while contributing to the growth and transformation of South African sport.”

The field for this tournament is one of the deepest and most comprehensive in terms of winners in the South African game as it includes, upon their availability:

The winner of the 2025/26 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by the Courier Guy,
The 2025/26 Fortress Rookie of the Year
The leading Papwa Sewgolum Class player from the 2025/26 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by the Courier Guy not otherwise exempt
The South African winners of international tournaments held outside of the borders of South Africa from 1 January 2025 until the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions, supported by Attacq and WCMC.
The winner of the 2026 Sunshine Ladies Tour Investec Order of Merit
The Sunshine Ladies Tour winners from 2026
The winner of the 2025 Betway Big Easy Tour Order of Merit
The winner of the 2026 Africa Amateur
The leading amateur from the GolfRSA Order of Merit as nominated by GolfRSA
The leading golfers within the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA)
Five wild card entries
With a prize fund of R2.5 million, including R1 million for the winning professional, the tournament will feature comprehensive coverage on SuperSport Channel 213 Golf. Professionals and amateurs will compete over 72 holes of stroke play, with SADGA golfers contesting 36 holes of medal play.

This season’s road to the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions, supported by Attacq and WCMC on the Sunshine Tour alone included a thrilling start by Mexico’s Luis Carrera when he won the first two tournaments of the season back-to-back.

Michael Hollick claimed a win in a groundbreaking season for him which has seen him graduate to the DP World Tour.

Former DP World Tour champion Haydn Porteous found his way back into the winner’s circle for the first time in eight years.

Young star Casey Jarvis won twice in three weeks on the Sunshine Tour in November. And Jayden Schaper stunned world golf when he claimed back-to-back victories in Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned events in December on his way to breaking into the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career.

You would be surprised to know what professional golfers get up to off the fairways and during a week in a world-class city such as Cape Town, the host of this week’s CIRCA Cape Town Open on the Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour. And it’s far more normal than you think.

The chance to play a tournament in a city that is one of the world’s most sought-after tourism destinations brings with it an ideal opportunity to go from the driving range and explore a mountain range, or to trade a few fairway drives for some of the city’s most scenic drives.

So as focused as this year’s field will be from Thursday to Sunday as they compete for glory at Royal Cape Golf Club, they will definitely be taking time out to explore Cape Town as well.

“I went to the Access Park shopping centre and there is a fish and chips shop there where you can buy a calamari and chips bun for R45. You have to do that in Cape Town. It’s like a Gatbsy (an iconic Cape Town sandwich) but it’s a bun. For R45 – it’s a bargain,” said Jaco Ahlers, a former winner of the CIRCA Cape Town Open.

“You have to get out there a bit and see the city. It feels like home to me because my sister used to live here. So we’d do Cavendish Square and Canal Walk Shopping Centre.”

Multiple Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour champion George Coetzee has a whole itinerary of favourites whenever he’s in Cape Town.

“The Blue Peter restaurant in Bloubergstrand is a must – sitting on the grass for sundowners with a beautiful view of Table Mountain. Then, because I love surfing, I always take in Muizenberg for a little long board session there. And the Oranjezicht Market – straight there for breakfast. Those are all of my favourites in Cape Town,” he said.

Gerhard Pepler has two favourites he never misses whenever in Cape Town.

“The Red Bus Tour is always fun. And the Two Oceans Aquarium. It’s amazing and an absolute must-do when you’re in Cape Town,” he said.

And Nikhil Rama is still busy planning his first holiday in Cape Town. “I’ve never been on a holiday here. I’ve always just played the CIRCA Cape Town Open and that’s it. I’ve been up Table Mountain when I was younger, but I’d like to plan a proper holiday here. I love the weather here. The city feels like a mini Europe.”

South Africa’s MJ Viljoen claimed a dramatic playoff victory in the SDC Open at the Zebula Golf Estate & Spa on Sunday, securing his first title on the HotelPlanner Tour.

Viljoen came from one shot behind at the start of the round and looked headed for a comfortable victory when he was at one point, three shots clear on the back nine. But a charging Deon Germishuys and a weather delay quickly changed that.

Germishuys birdied two of his last four holes for a 67 to set the clubhouse target at sixteen under. Viljoen came back after the delay and bogeyed his next three holes to slip one behind Germishuys. Viljoen then birdied the par five 18th for a 70 to force the playoff.

Viljoen birdied the 18th to claim the title in the playoff.

“It’s massive. I went through a lot the last two or three years. I had some decent starts on the HotelPlanner Tour. It’s time it happened. This opens a lot of doors for me,” said Viljoen.

“It was a lot of emotions today. I threw it away a bit after the start again, but I kept believing in myself and I brought it through. I look at the leaderboard but I try not to react to it too much. Try to keep the mind clear and stay in the moment, and just play.”

Viljoen was very happy to share the special moment with his family.

“It’s very cool. My wife flew to Johannesburg on Friday, and it’s very nice to have them here.”

It’s Viljoen’s fourth Sunshine Tour victory of his career, but more importantly his first on the HotelPlanner Tour which has provided a valuable pathway for South African professionals to graduate onto the DP World Tour.

Jean Hugo and Maxence Giboudot shared third place on 14 under. South Africa’s Ryan van Velzen produced an incredible closing 63, with a back nine of 29 to secure a top-five finish.

This was the first of four tournaments co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour, with the next event set to take place at Royal Cape Golf Club this week in the CIRCA Cape Town Open.

Norway’s Baard Skogen and France’s Maxence Giboudot will head into the final round of the SDC Open tied for the lead on 15 under par after a thrilling third round of low scoring at the Zebula Golf Estate & Spa.

Skogen signed for a 64 to top the leaderboard, and Giboudot birdied the last for a 68 to join him.
“I’m over the moon. I made some long putts and couldn’t be more pleased,” said Skogen, who finished fifth in this tournament last year.

The key to his round on Saturday was some incredible putting, especially for his two eagles on the 15th and 18th holes.

“I hit a nice shot into 15 and it stayed just short of the ridge, and I got lucky with the putt. On 18, that putt had some speed but went in the hole so I got lucky with that one,” he said.

His round of eight under was one better than he’d told his friend would be needed for him to get back into this tournament.

“I told my friend yesterday that if I shoot seven under I’d get back in the tournament. I played poorly on moving day here last year so I did better than that today. I felt like I did good work over the winter so hopefully I’m seeing the fruits of my labour.”

Giboudot remains in contention to become the second French winner of this title after Clement Sordet in 2022.

The leaders are one stroke clear of South Africa’s MJ Viljoen, who posted a 66, and Germany’s Jannik de Bruyn, who signed for a 67.

It’s a tight leaderboard going into Sunday’s final round, and it’s exactly what Skogen is looking forward to.

“Who wouldn’t be excited? We get to play for a win. That’s what we work for. Everybody wants to win. I haven’t won as a pro and didn’t win much in college. It’s been a long time since I’ve won something.”
