Mamelodi Sundowns’ Caf Champions League rivals Setif have been thrown out of the competition following crowd trouble.

The unruly scenes occurred during the visit of Sundowns to the Algerian side’s home turf back on June 18.

A statement released by Caf read the following: ‘Following the regrettable incidents that took place during match no.98 of the 2016 edition of Caf Champions League between ES Setif (Algeria) vs Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), whereby the referee was obliged to abandon the said match before its end.

‘Match officials noted especially the pitch invasion as well as numerous throws of missiles, stones, bottles, and firecrackers, provoking a certain number of injured spectators and members of the security forces.

‘The CAF Organizing Committee for the Inter-Clubs Competitions decided to apply the provisions of Chapter XII para 3 and considered ES Sétif loser and eliminated from the competition without prejudice to any other sanctions that may be imposed by CAF Disciplinary Board.’

As a result of the decision, Sundowns will be stripped of their three points for winning the [incomplete] game at Setif, as in accordance with Caf’s rules.

The statement continues: ‘Concerning the result of the said match, it is hence cancelled in conformity with the spirit of article XI.13 of the regulations stipulating: “If a team withdraws after the start of the group matches without having played half of the group matches, the overall results of the matches in which this team participated is cancelled.”’

Sundowns will look to restart their campaign when they welcome Enyimba to the Lucas Moripe Stadium next week. Enyimba began their Group B campaign with a narrow 1-0 loss to Egyptian outfit Zamalek.

Sundowns have traveled to Algeria for their Caf Champions League Group Stage tie but have done so without the their captain, reports IOL.

The 26-year-old is currently embroiled in talks over a new contract from the club with his current deal set to expire at the end of the month, with Kaizer Chiefs having reportedly made an offer to take the defender to the Naturena on a free transfer.

The Chiefs offer is allegedly far better the the initial terms offered by Sundowns, meaning that a switch to the Amakhosi may ultimately prove too lucrative to turn down. However Mphahlele is reportedly keen to remain at Chloorkop, if the Brazilians technical staff can meet his conditions.

Mphahlele made 27 appearances for Sundowns across all competitions this season.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is torn between his ambitions for his club at the Caf Champions League and his country with Keagan Dolly at the centre of the turmoil.

A key member of the national U23 squad, Dolly produced a Man of the Match display in his country’s 4-0 thrashing of Gambia on Saturday, where he netted twice and created the other two, but is set to miss the key Caf group stage matches against Zamalek and Setif.

‘I don’t want to lose Keagan to the Olympics but also I don’t want Keagan not to play against Zamalek,’ Mosimane told KickOff.

‘I don’t want Keagan not to play against Setif in Algeria. We will see, we will speak to Owen [SA U-23 coach Da Gama] and also let’s see how it goes.’

Mosimane, who coached Bafana Bafana from 2010-2012, believes perhaps the decision should be made by Dolly himself.

‘I have been with Bafana. I had players taken from me at the airport and I don’t forget that pain. I don’t forget that pain, it was a sharp knife in my heart.

‘Since at Sundowns I have sacrificed my pre-season, I have given players for Cosafa. If it comes to push, maybe Keagan must go to the Olympic Games. It’s country first. But I am not going to make that call now. We still have to discuss and see. Maybe Keagan also must decide.’

If selected for Amaglug-glug, Dolly will miss club fixtures against Zamalek (July 26), ES Setif (August 12) and Enyimba (August 23).

South Africa U23 Olympic fixtures:

South Africa v Brazil – August 4

South Africa v Denmark – August 8

South Africa v Iraq – August 11
