Who has worn the no. 7 jersey at Kaizer Chiefs in the past two decades? There have been some hits, but also many misses, writes Nick Said.

Kaizer Chiefs signing Ranga Chivaviro has been wearing the No.7 jersey, which has been worn by several top stars down the years but is something of a cursed number too.

It is not the first time in the striker’s career he has taken seven, having worn it at lowly second-tier TS Sporting in the past.

But who are the others to have worn the number at Kaizer Chiefs in the last 20 years?

KAIZER MOTAUNG JNR

Kaizer Motaung Jnr of Kaizer Chiefs challenged by Joseph Musonda of Golden Arrows during the Absa Premiership 2012/13 match between Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows on the 06 November at Peter Mokaba Stadium
©Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix

The boss’ son and current sporting director of the club, Motaung Jnr wore the No.7 with mixed results, perhaps being given a little more leeway than most players when things were not going well. He was in the team for 11 years scoring 34 goals in 80 starts, which sounds decent but there were many substitute appearances in that time. If you break it down over the campaigns that is a little over three goals per season. Not great for a striker. He retired after the 2013/14 season.

KATLEGO MPHELA

Katlego Mphela of South Africa subtituted during the international friendly between South Africa and Algeria at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa on January 12 2013©Samuel Shivambu/BackpagePix

Mphela initially wore the No.37 at Chiefs following his move from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2013/14, but when Motaung retired, the Bafana Bafana striker took over the No.7. He would wear it for just one season though before leaving Naturena. It is fair to say things did not work out for him at the club, he scored six goals in eight starts (and 21 appearances in all) over 18 months. Perhaps the move just came a bit late in his career, even though he was in his 20s.

WILLIAM TWALA

William Twala of Kaizer Chiefs during the Absa Premiership match between Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs on 09 February 2016 at Bidvest Stadium Pic Sydney Mahlangu/ BackpagePix

Twala was originally No.29 at Chiefs but switched to seven for two seasons when Mphela left. He was also a player used mostly off the bench in his time at the club, scoring three goals in 19 starts (and 50 appearances) before he departed for Maritzburg United in the 2017/18 season.

RYAN MOON

Ryan Moon of Kaizer Chiefs during the Absa Premiership 2016/17 match between Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban South Africa on 21 December 2016 ©Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix

Young striker Moon was No.29 when he came through the ranks at Naturena but took the No.7 after Twala departed. He also only wore the number for a single season before he moved on to Stellenbosch FC. He scored six goals in 17 starts (and 43 appearances) for Chiefs and is now at Lamontville Golden Arrows after a spell at Varberg in Sweden.

LAZAROUS KAMBOLE

Lazarous Kambole of Kaizer Chiefs during the DStv Premiership 2020/21 match between Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 06 April 2021 ©Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix

Zambian Kambole was a disaster at Chiefs in his three seasons after joining from ZESCO United in 2019. He arrived with some fanfare but netted only two goals in 21 starts (and 46 appearances). He left at the end of 2021/22 and moved to Young Africans and later returned to ZESCO in Zambia.

Mamelodi Sundowns played out to their third consecutive draw following their 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows at the Princess Magogo Stadium in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday evening.

Arrows were only up by one goal in Durban when Mlungwana let Sipho Mbule’s header off of a corner kick get past him and into the goal.

Earlier, Mlungwana made a number of great saves as the Arrows, an unpredictable mid-table team, put on their best game of the season.

It was Mbule’s first Premiership goal of the season. He came off the bench in the second half to help Sundowns extend their streak of league games without a loss to 20.

In the 23rd minute, Ryan Moon scored for the home team. He was the first to react to a low cross and hit the ball past custodian Ronwen Williams.

Since April 1, when they won their sixth straight Premiership title, Sundowns have been in a bit of a slump. They have drawn with Cape Town City, Swallows, and Arrows, and they have only scored one goal during this time.

But they are 19 points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates and have four games left. They are on track to beat the record of 16 points that they set last year for a team that won the championship.

The Pretoria team has made it to the quarterfinals of both the South African FA Cup and the CAF Champions League. They want to win all three.

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Ryan Moon and former AFC Ajax defender Dean Solomons have secured moves to Swedish top-flight side Varbergs BoIs ahead of the 2021 season.

Moon (24) joins the Swedish top-flight side from DStv Premiership side Stellenbosch FC for an undisclosed fee, while Solomon (22) joins on a free transfer after leaving the Dutch giant at the end of last season.

Former Chiefs striker Moon broke into the PSL with Maritzburg United under Ernst Middendorp before a move to Naturena. Things didn’t quite work out for the young striker at the Glamour Boys and he secured a move to Stellenbosch at the start of the 2019-20 season. Moon has scored 10 goals in 69 league games.

Stellenbosch then confirmed the transfer in a statement on Tuesday, which read: ‘Transfer confirmed. Ryan Moon has signed with top tier Swedish club Varberg BoIS FC. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank Ryan for his services and wish him all the best for his future.’

‘It is always pleasing to see players follow their dreams. Ryan has always wanted to apply his trade in Europe and we’re happy for a player like that to go on and achieve what he has set out [to do]. We wish him all the best,’ Barker told the club’s media department.

Both players are believed to have signed three-year contracts with the ambitious Swedish side who finished 11th in the 16-team division during their first-ever top-flight campaign last season.

The duo join compatriots Keanin Ayer (20), Tashreeq Matthews (20) and Luke Le Roux (21), increasing their South African contingent to five players.

Mamelodi Sundowns came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday evening, reports DYLAN APPOLIS.

The Brazilians came into this encounter having played their last league encounter on 27 November, when they narrowly defeated AmaZulu 1-0 on home soil.

Stellies, meanwhile, entered off the back of a 1-1 draw with SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on 30 November.

The visitors got off to a good start and nearly opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but Ryan Moon was unable to keep his effort down as it sailed over the target.

Sundowns had a chance to take the lead in the 25th minute when Lyle Lakay sent a dangerous free kick into the area, but Stellenbosch managed to clear the ball away from danger.

Stellies draw first blood when they took the lead after 35 minutes when Moon’s towering header found the net.

The visitors went into half time with a one-goal lead over Sundowns.

Pitso Mosimane made his first change early in the second half when he introduced Keletso Makgalwa for Jose Ali Meza.

Sundowns should have levelled matters in the 48th minute when the ball dropped kindly for Rivaldo Coetzee at the far post, but he was unable to guide his header on target.

The Brazilians were then awarded a penalty two minutes later. Themba Zwane stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.

Stellenbosch were then reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute when Mogamad De Goede was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Coetzee.

Mosimane made his second change three minutes later when Mosa Lebusa came on to replace the injured Coetzee.

Sundowns took the lead for the first time of the game in the 85th minute when Sphelele Mkhulise scored his first goal of the season.

The Brazilians put the game to bed in stoppage time when Makgalwa found the back of the net with a neat finish.

Sundowns held on to their lead over Stellies until the final whistle to collect all three points at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Moon spend some with training with Scottish side Hibernian but failed to make an impression before heading to Hungry where he failed to secure a deal with Ujpest.

However, the lanky striker has since returned to South Africa and joined Stellies, who will be hoping to make their own impact in the top-flight.

The 22-year-old has now become Stellies’ 12th signing during the current transfer window behind the likes of Kristopher Bergman, Morgan Gould, Dickson Afoakwa, Marc van Heerden, Mpho Matsi, Tshireletso Motsogi, Diego Franco, Boy de Jong, Dillan Solomons, Zimo Brenner and Waseem Isaacs.

Moon could be set to make his debut when Stellenbosch take on Maritzburg United in the Absa Premiership at the Coetzenburg Stadium on 25 August.

Chiefs face a tough fixture schedule under new coach Ernst Middendorp and will now be without two key defenders, the club confirmed on Tuesday.

Bafana Bafana right-back Mphahlele suffered a knee injury in a league game with Golden Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium on December 1, and he is expected to need six to eight weeks to recover from his surgery.

While centre-back Mathoho suffered a more serious injury, as he tore his ankle ligaments in a Caf Confederation Cup second leg tie with Zimamoto at Amaan Stadium a week ago, and will now miss at least three months of action.

The Glamour Boys will also be without striker Ryan Moon. His injury, however, is not as serious, as he returned from Zanzibar with a small fracture under the eye socket and will be monitored closely to determine his availability.

Amakhosi are seventh on the Absa Premiership log and will be looking to pick up points when next in action against SuperSport United in what would be Ernst Middendorp and Shaun Bartlett’s first assignment.

TFG SoccerClub senior writer Marshall Gouts selects five things learned from Kaizer Chiefs’ 2-1 loss to Zimamoto in the Caf Confederation Cup.

1. Squad Depth

Giovanni Solinas flexed his squad depth once again, opting for a similar new-look Chiefs outfit who were beaten by Golden Arrows in their most recent clash.

Solinas made two changes to the side that lost to Clinton Larsen’s side, with Siphelele Ntshangase and Ryan Moon being handed starting berths.

The new-look Chiefs side displayed their class in bits and patches, but a 2-1 defeat to lowly Zimamoto is an unacceptable result, regardless of the squad that did duty. The result sees Chiefs advance to the next round of the Caf Confed Cup.

2. Set-pieces:

Chiefs dropped three points in their loss against Arrows, courtesy of two penalties being given away due to careless tackles in the area.

Solinas’ side had clearly not learned their lesson as they went behind with minutes left in the first-half, courtesy of a penalty after yet another ill-timed challenge.

Things went from bad to worse as Chiefs succumbed to a 2-1 loss, with the winner being scored from the penalty spot to pile the misery on Chiefs with regards to their woeful defending in the six-yard area.

Conceding three penalties in two games.

3. Manyama effect:

The former PSL Footballer of the Year is slowly regaining his match fitness after that horrific life-threatening accident which occurred in October.

Initially feared to be out until the end of the year, the former Cape Town City captain made a speedy recovery and is slowly getting back to his best.

Amakhosi fans are yet to see the vintage Manyama show his true form. However, his performance in Zanzibar showed flashes of the old Manyama.

The 28-year-old took his goal well, after latching on to a brilliant pass from Bernard Parker. The goal will give him some much-needed confidence, while another 90 minutes under the belt will greatly help him get back into his best shape.

4. Desired XI:

By the look of things, Solinas is yet to decide on his starting XI, but more importantly, he is yet make up his mind on the tried and trusted combinations that make up the spine of the team.

The former Free State Stars mentor has dabbled with his defence the entire season throughout all competitions, with Eric Mathoho and Teenage Hadebe the latest combination at the heart of the defence.

In the engine room, Mr Champagne pass Ntshangase was paired alongside Willard Katsande, which seems to be two of Solinas’ go-to-guys in the midfield alongside George Maluleka or Hendrick Ekstein.

Out-of-favour striker Ryan Moon got a rare chance upfront and almost justified his inclusion with a goal. However, his second-half strike was controversially disallowed for an infringement.

5. Eric Mathoho injury:

Besides losing 2-1 to lowly Zimamoto, Chiefs still advanced to the next round of the Caf Confederation Cup. Their major injury concern for the already short-staffed Soweto giants is Bafana Bafana international Mathoho as he hobbled off on the hour mark with an injury, to be replaced by starlet Siyabonga Ngezana.
