Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs moved within two points of second placed SuperSport United after they both claimed wins in Saturday’s DStv Premiership action.

In Soweto, Tapelo Xoki’s penalty in the 79th minute gave Pirates a 1-0 victory over SuperSport, while Yusuf Maart’s penalty kick helped Chiefs defeat Maritzburg United 3-2.

In the first 10 minutes of play in Pietermaritzburg, Keagan Dolly and Christian Saile scored for the Chiefs.

Prior to halftime, however, Rafiq de Goede and Amadou Soukouna scored for the second-worst Maritzburg to tie the game.

A softly awarded and hotly contested penalty allowed Maart to score the game-winning goal in the 76th minute in front of a sold-out crowd of 15,000.

The focus in the richest national league in Africa has shifted to the race for second place, as Mamelodi Sundowns only require two points from their final seven matches to win their sixth consecutive title.

SuperSport is currently in second place with 39 points, followed by Pirates and Chiefs with 37.

A club that finishes second qualifies for the CAF Champions League and has the opportunity to earn at least $550,000 if it survives one or two qualifying rounds and earns a group spot.

In 1995, Pirates won what was then known as the African Cup of Champions Clubs, and in 2021, Chiefs placed second. SuperSport have once made it to the group stage.

SuperSport are surprisingly in second place after selling their best players, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena, to Sundowns, their Pretoria rivals.

Due to a substandard pitch, they have also been banned from using their home field and must find a new location for their remaining three home games, including a potentially pivotal matchup with Chiefs.

Chibuike Ohizu scored the first goal for Sekhukhune United, while Eliosa Ighodaro scored the equalizer for Chippa United three minutes later in a 1-1 draw.

The Brazilians were chasing the game after Ryan Moon opened the scoring for Stellies early on in the encounter.

They found a way back as Themba Zwane slotted home a controversial penalty, but then the game completely swung toward the defending Absa Premiership champs as De Groede received his marching orders in the 73rd minute.

Sundowns reserve keeper Reeyad Pieterse was also shown a red card on the substitutes bench for using foul language after the tackle.

Sphelele Mkhulise and Keletso Makgalwa then netted in the final 10 minutes as they got their names on the scoresheet to seal the three points for Downs.

After the match Mosimane was incensed by what he called a leg-breaking challenge on Coetzee, but was happy to take the three points.

Mamelodi Sundowns came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday evening, reports DYLAN APPOLIS.

The Brazilians came into this encounter having played their last league encounter on 27 November, when they narrowly defeated AmaZulu 1-0 on home soil.

Stellies, meanwhile, entered off the back of a 1-1 draw with SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on 30 November.

The visitors got off to a good start and nearly opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but Ryan Moon was unable to keep his effort down as it sailed over the target.

Sundowns had a chance to take the lead in the 25th minute when Lyle Lakay sent a dangerous free kick into the area, but Stellenbosch managed to clear the ball away from danger.

Stellies draw first blood when they took the lead after 35 minutes when Moon’s towering header found the net.

The visitors went into half time with a one-goal lead over Sundowns.

Pitso Mosimane made his first change early in the second half when he introduced Keletso Makgalwa for Jose Ali Meza.

Sundowns should have levelled matters in the 48th minute when the ball dropped kindly for Rivaldo Coetzee at the far post, but he was unable to guide his header on target.

The Brazilians were then awarded a penalty two minutes later. Themba Zwane stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.

Stellenbosch were then reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute when Mogamad De Goede was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Coetzee.

Mosimane made his second change three minutes later when Mosa Lebusa came on to replace the injured Coetzee.

Sundowns took the lead for the first time of the game in the 85th minute when Sphelele Mkhulise scored his first goal of the season.

The Brazilians put the game to bed in stoppage time when Makgalwa found the back of the net with a neat finish.

Sundowns held on to their lead over Stellies until the final whistle to collect all three points at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
