Marumo Gallants FC interim coach Trevor Mathiane has emphasised the importance of capitalising on opportunities when facing top sides like Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Bahlabane Ba Ntwa suffered back-to-back defeats in the Betway Premiership following their 3-1 loss to Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday.

The defeat sees Gallants remain in 14th place on the table with 18 points from 22 matches.

Mathiane expressed pride in his Gallants squad despite a tough result, praising the players for executing his game plan and giving their all on the pitch.

“Yes, actually I’m very happy with the boys they played very well,” Mathiane told SuperSport after the game.

“They gave everything that I told them to do just that we were unlucky, we created a lot of chances. We were supposed to convert chances.

“When you play against teams like Chiefs, Sundowns – the little chances you get you must make use of it.”

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso acknowledged that the performance was not their best but praised his players’ improved attitude in the second-half against Marumo Gallants.

The Brazilians claimed a 3-1 victory over a stubborn Gallants side through an own goal by Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya and a double by Teboho Mokoena, which cancelled out Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo’s equaliser at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

The win sees Sundowns move to the top of the Betway Premiership standings with 50 points from 21 matches, two points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates.

Cardoso admitted he was far from pleased with his side’s first-half display despite Sundowns ultimately securing all three points, saying the team only showed the required intensity after the break.

“I think you resume it very well, technically not the best game. First half, I was really, really not satisfied,” Cardoso told SuperSport after the game.

“I think we need to understand it’s time to give everything from the first minute, we were a little bit sloppy on the start and then I think we showed not too much respect for the others but for ourselves.

“By not committing with the highest intensity and when thoughts flow your energy. Second half, we changed the attitude, it was not the best game I repeat. But a good fight in the second half, I think we had to take the bull by the horns and in the end quite tasty three points for sure.

“Now, obviously this is a team that doesn’t know how to play without the ball so despite you mind can go one dimension that needs to defend the result which was so difficult to achieve. You cannot have that attitude, we need to defend the way knowing how to play our football,” he concluded.

Mamelodi Sundowns attacking midfielder Nuno Santos believes focus and the right mindset will be key as the Brazilians continue their push for success.

The Brazilians will be relishing the chance to walk away with maximum points when they take on Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday evening.

A win for Sundowns will mean they overtake Orlando Pirates and reclaim top spot in the Betway Premiership standings.

The Portuguese playmaker stressed that there are no easy matches in football, insisting Sundowns must approach every game with the correct mentality, intent and concentration if they want to deliver a strong performance and secure all three points.

“In football there is no easy game. We have to go with the right mentality, intentions and focus to the game,” Santos said.

“If we do that, we can do well and have a great game. We can be able to walk away with the three points.”

Mamelodi Sundowns against Marumo Gallants kicks off at 19:30.

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze welcomed the victory but acknowledged a slow start before highlighting a far more assertive second-half performance that turned the tide in their favour.

Amakhosi made it three straight wins across all competitions following their 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants thanks to a 66th-minute goal from Makabi Lilepo at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The Glamour Boys have now moved up to second place in the Betway Premiership standings with 30 points, two points off log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs will be hoping to continue their current form when they host ZESCO United in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday.

“We are happy for the three points. I believe that we didn’t start the game well,” Kaze told SuperSport TV after the game.

“The first half was a bit sloppy, little bit reactive. We had to tell the players that we really want the three points, we need to go out there and get on the front-foot and I believe the second half was much, much better and what a goal.

“What a goal, we are very happy to get the three points and we now going to focus on our CAF Confederation Cup game on Sunday.”

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mfundo Vilakazi is focused on securing all three points against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday evening.

The Soweto giants are set to travel to the Dr Molemela Stadium when they take on Gallants in their next Betway Premiership fixture.

Amakhosi come into this fixture high in confidence after claiming a 1-0 win over ZESCO United in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage fixture over the weekend.

Chiefs are currently placed third in the Betway Premiership standings with 27 points, five points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

“The three points were important for us even though we couldn’t play our football due to the bumpy pitch, but we adapted well enough to get the win,” Vilakazi told his club’s official website.

“Because of the AFCON break, there’s very little time between games but as players we have to adjust to the situation and get on with it.

“As a player, I am just looking to help the team because everyone is going to have to contribute.

“I think the most important thing in these conditions is to get some rest between matches.

“I believe that if we play our football, the results will come. It will be nice to get another three points away from home.

“It crossed my mind, and I think I’d like to do it again.”

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is confident that Relebohile Mofokeng will be a key player in helping the club win the Betway Premiership title.

Mofokeng scored the winning goal that saw Pirates lift the Carling Knockout Cup following their 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants in the final.

The 21-year-old has scored one goal and registered three assists in 17 appearances across all competitions, while playing a key role in helping Pirates secure the MTN8 title and Carling Knockout Cup trophy.

Ouaddou has since stressed the importance of Mofokeng to the team and believes he will play a huge role in helping the Buccaneers win the league title.

“The president (Relebohile Mofokeng) is very important for us in our team,” said Ouaddou in the post-match press conference.

“I love him, I love his style of play. He’s a very good guy. Top human being, he’s someone who loves football, he dreams about football. I think 24 hours, he feels football.

“I cannot say much about his form in the beginning of the season. He played many games with the national team and didn’t have lot of time to rest. Even the season before he played 40 or 45 games, he’s not robot.

“I can understand that he was a bit tired, we gave him some rest, and he came back with a very good fitness. The last four games we played, he was part of our success.

“You can see a fit Rele Mofokeng and a Rele that is tired. If he’s 70% fit, he can help the team. I cannot imagine if he’s 100%. If he’s 100%, the president is someone who can make us win the title.”

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has praised the extraordinary qualities of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi after he played his final game for the Buccaneers.

Mbokazi played his final game for Pirates in style after helping the club lift the Carling Knockout Cup following their 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The 20-year-old will now embark on a new journey after sealing a move to Chicago Fire in the Major League Soccer.

The Bafana Bafana put pen to paper on a contract that will see him remain at the club until 2029, with a club option for the 2029-30 season.

“I think he has a good future. I believe he will improve even more,” said Ouaddou.

“I think in the US, they will help him improve in terms of leadership and communication because you need someone to take the lead from the back to push the lines.

“Hence, communication is very important because when you are a captain and playing as one of two central defenders, you need to command and take the lead since you have the game in front of you and you are seeing everything.”
