After struggling for game time last season, Keletso Makgalwa looks set to depart Mamelodi Sundowns to leave on loan in search of regular game time.

The youngster broke into the team in Pitso Mosimane’s final season at the club but then Peter Shalulile, Kermit Erasmus and Gift Motupa all arrived at the start of last season, beefing up the front line and adding competition for places.

Now, the squad have been further bolstered by the arrival of Pavol Safranko and Thabiso Kutumela, leaving Makgalwa down the pecking order.

According to SoccerLaduma, Swallows are looking to add Makgalwa to their list of interests at the club with the Dube Birds also reportedly interested in Hlompho Kekana and Tebogo Langerman.

Makgalwa managed only 10 matches in all competitions at Sundowns last season under co-coaches Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena, and with more arrivals at the club the youngster’s best option for playing time may be to leave the club.

The likes of Lyle Foster, Fagrie Lakay, Abbubaker Mobara, Sipho Mbule and Keletso Makgalwa have withdrawn from the squad.

Safa has since confirmed that their replacements will be announced in due course.

“South Africa U23 Olympic Team has suffered a huge blow following the withdrawal of five players due to various medical reasons,” Safa said in a statement.

“South Africa is in Group A together with hosts Japan who they play on 22 July at the Tokyo Stadium and France who they meet at Saitama Stadium on 25 July. The U23s will then round off their group-stage matches against Mexico at the Sapporo Dome on 28 July.

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has revealed that they will be without the services of Themba Zwane, Kermit Erasmus and Keletso Makgalwa for their next encounter against Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Brazilians will be hoping to return to winning ways when they take on Celtic on Wednesday, following their goalless draw with Swallows FC this past weekend.

Sundowns will have a chance to further extend their lead at the top of the DStv Premiership standings, having already clinched the league title last week.

Mngqithi said his side do not have many injuries ahead of the match and will be boosted by the return of Gift Motupa, despite not have Zwane, Erasmus and Makgalwa available for the encounter.

‘I think preparations have gone very well,’ Mngqithi told the Sundowns media team.

‘We were just unfortunate to lose Themba Zwane in the game against Swallows but [Gift] Motupa is coming back, which is good for us.

‘We don’t have too many injuries at this stage. We only have Kermit [Erasmus] out, we have [Keletso] Makgalwa out but generally the squad is in a very good space and its promises to give us an interesting match.’

Mamelodi Sundowns will travel to the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium when they take on Bloemfontein Celtic in their penultimate DStv Premiership clash on Wednesday, with kick-off set for 5pm.

The Brazilians will begin their Nedbank Cup title defence when they welcome Stellies to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in the round of 32 on Wednesday.

Apart from the Nedbank Cup, Nedbank also sponsors the Ke Yona Team initiative which gives youngsters the opportunity to showcase their talent.

Makgalwa was one of the standout performers in the tournament last year after scoring the winning goal against Highlands Park in the dying minutes of the quarter-finals before bagging another against Bidvest Wits in the semi-finals.

‘Once we saw the fixture was out and saw that we are playing Stellenbosch, we knew it would be a difficult one. Every time they play against us they give 150%, we are up for the challenge and hopefully, we come out victorious,’ Makgalwa told his club’s official website.

‘The cup will always be special not only for me but also for the upcoming players, as the youngsters are allowed to showcase their talent through the Ke Yona team.

‘I appreciate every moment I spend on the field. I want to achieve more than what I did last season and hope to score more goals this time around,’ concluded Makgalwa.

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways after claiming a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Cape Town City in their DStv Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday evening, reports DYLAN APPOLIS.

Sundowns made only one chance to their side which drew with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila as Kermit Erasmus returned to the squad, while captain Hlompho Kekana was named on the bench.

The game got off to a lively start with Sundowns pushing up early and pressurising the Citizens defence as they went in search of an early goal.

Sundowns did manage to break the deadlock in the eighth minute when Lyle Lakay fired a thunderous strike from range to find the back of the net after his initial free kick was blocked.

Peter Shalulile should have doubled his side’s lead in the 22nd minute after he was played through on goal but the striker failed to find the back of the net in an one-on-one situation with City keeper Peter Leeuwenburgh.

The visitors continued to press forward and nearly got their second midway through the first half, but Andile Jali’s effort was well saved by the City goalkeeper.

At the other end, Craig Martin thought he had levelled matters with three minutes left to play when he headed the ball home at the far post but his goal was disallowed for offside.

Sundowns managed to hold on to their one-goal lead over City as the game went into half time.

The home side opted to make a change early in the second half after Shalulile took a knock in the first half and was subsequently replaced by Khuliso Mudau.

Thapelo Morena came close to handing Sundowns the lead in the 60th minute after he turned on the pace to lose his man and break into the box, but saw his strike sail wide of the target.

City had a chance of their own 10 minutes later when Fagrie Lakay latched on to a dangerous ball into the area before heading his effort towards goal only to sail wide of goal.

Sundowns were knocking on the door and almost extended their lead in the 77th minute. Andile Jali broke into the box to unleash a strike forcing Leeuwenburgh to make another great save at the near post.

The Brazilians then made a double change two minutes later when Zwane and Erasmus were replaced by George Maluleka and Keletso Makgalwa.

The home side eventually doubled their lead in the 82nd minute when Jali made a great run down the wing to break into the box and slide the ball across to Makgalwa, who was on hand to slot the ball home from close range.

Jali was then replaced by Kekana after sustaining an injury in the buildup to Makgalwa’s goal before Promise Mkhuma came on for Sphelele Mkhulise a minute later.

Mpho Makola nearly pulled a goal back for the visitors but could only rattle the woodwork with his curling free kick from just outside the box.

However, Sundowns held on to their lead over City to extend their unbeaten run in the league by claiming all three points away from home.

Mamelodi Sundowns left back Lyle Lakay has revealed what he learned from veteran players Tebogo Lenagerman, Denis Onyango, Hlompho Kekana and Anthony Laffor during their time at SuperSport United.

The 29-year-old joined Sundowns from Cape Town City in 2018 and has already managed to feature 76 times, while bagging four goals and assisting a further eight to date.

He has already won four trophies with Sundowns, including two Absa Premiership titles, a Telkom Knockout Cup trophy and the Nedbank Cup title.

Lakay says the likes of Sphelele Mkhulise, Keletso Makgalwa and Promise Mkhuma should be following in his footsteps and learn from the more experienced players in the squad.

‘I have played with Tebogo Lenagerman, Denis Onyango, Hlompho and Anthony Laffor at SuperSport and for me as a youngster back then, it was all about learning from the senior players, doing whatever they were doing to succeed because it is evident with what they have achieved,’ Lakay told the media.

‘When I speak to the youngsters at Sundowns, I tell them that I was the youngest in the SuperSport team when I got to the senior team.

‘There was Daine Klate, [Ricardo] Katza, David Kannemeyer, Siyabonga Nkosi and all other experienced players.

‘I just told myself that I have to learn from them because at the end of the day they won’t advise you to do wrong things, they will advise you to do the right things.

He added: ‘In order for them to succeed, they need to do what they have been doing.

‘If you look at the way they performed in the bio-bubble, they helped the team a lot and I think it is evident that Sundowns have a bright future with the youngsters and hopefully we can continue with the success.’

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has likened his squad’s revival at Downs to a similar transition made by Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid, saying that it’s key to find the balance between youth and experience.

After securing a third successive PSL title, Sundowns will have the chance to secure a historic treble when they face Bloemfontein Celtic in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday evening.

Over the last couple of windows, Mosimane has focused on bringing in younger players as he aims to revitalise his squad by signing the likes of goalkeeper Ricardo Goss and midfielder Haashim Domingo from Bidvest Wits, Lesedi Kapinga from Black Leopards and Grant Margeman from Ajax Cape Town.

In addition, the Highlands Park duo of Mothobi Mvala and the league’s joint top-goalscorer, Peter Shalulile, are reportedly on their way to Chloorkop as well.

Downs have also witnessed a number of players graduate from their academy this season, and with great success, as Promise Mkhuma, Phakamani Mahlambi, Keletso Makgalwa, Nicholus Lukhubeni and Sphelele Mkhulise all featured for the first team.

The Brazilians, though, still have a number of experienced pros such as captain Hlompho Kekana as well as goalkeepers Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene, striker Anthony Laffor and defender Wayne Arendse – all 35 years old.

Speaking to the media, Mosimane admitted that it’s important to find the right balance or one would suffer the consequences like Barcelona.

“I have several players who’ve passed 30: Anele [Ngcongca], Kennedy Mweene, [Tebogo] Langerman, [Tiyani] Mabunda, Wayne,” said Mosimane.

“Eventually you have to rebuild the team, that’s why I have signed younger players for next season. The likes of Lesedi Kapinga, Ricardo Goss, Haashim Domingo and Grant Margeman. But you can’t throw them all in at once.

“You need Kekana there to guide them. The senior players are key in blending in the new players. Zinedine Zidane did it well at Real Madrid, something that Barcelona failed to do.

“I stuck with him because he’s my captain; he’s an important player. I think he played more minutes than anyone in the bubble,” Mosimane added.

Jan Olde Riekerink named Craig Martin at right back instead of captain Thamsanqa Mkhize, while new signing Diego Appollis was designated to the beach.

Pitso Mosimane, meanwhile, made three changes from his side’s draw with Highlands Park as Wayne Arendse, Tiyani Mabunda and Nicholus Lukhubeni returned to the squad.

The Citizens got off to a great start by opening the scoring in the 13th minute when Bradley Ralani found the net from a tight angle after his initial strike was saved by Denis Onyango.

City nearly doubled their lead five minutes later after Fagrie Lakay cut the ball back into the path of Shane Roberts and Mduduzi Mdantsane, but neither player could make contact with the ball as they collided.

The Cape Town-based outfit continued to press forward and managed to double their lead on the stroke of half time as Kermit Erasmus lobbed the on-rushing Onyango to find the net after he was played through on goal by Mdantsane.

Sundowns then pulled a goal back in stoppage time after Edmilson Dove nodded the ball into his own net from a Gaston Sirino corner.

Olde Riekerink was forced to make a change early in the second half when Mkhize came on to replace the injured Martin.

The Citizens came to life in the 53rd minute and grabbed their third goal as Ralani lobbed the ball over Onyango to make it 3-1.

Mosimane opted to make a triple substitution in the 63rd minute by bringing on Andile Jali, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Phakamani Mahlambi to replace Nicholus Lukhubeni, Tiyani Mabunda and Themba Zwane, respectively, while City introduced Mpho Makola in place of Roberts.

City started to dominate proceedings after 70 minutes of play as they looked to extend their lead even further.

The Brazilians’ persistence paid off as they pulled a goal back in stoppage time after Keletso Makgalwa calmly slotted the ball past Peter Leeuwenburgh to make it 3-2.

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the Nedbank Cup final after claiming a thrilling 3-2 victory over Bidvest Wits at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

Pitso Mosimane made five changes to his side which beat Highlands Park in the quarter-finals by bring Mosa Lebusa, Rivaldo Coetzee, Sphelele Mkhulise and Nicholus Lukhubeni in the starting lineup.

Meanwhile, Gavin Hunt gave Brighton Mhlongo his first start in the competition while captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, Deon Hotto and Haashim Domingo returned to the squad.

The game got off to a slow start with both teams trying to find their rhythm in the opening exchanges.

Wits had the first chance at goal as Denis Onyango fumbled Deon Hotto’s long-range strike, with Cole Alexander failing to hit the target on the rebound.

Sundowns started to gain momentum and had their first real chance at goal in the 22nd minute as Themba Zwane unleashed a strike from the edge of the box, but fired his effort straight to Mhlongo after linking up Sibusiso Vilakazi.

The Brazilians were then awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark after Buhlebuyeza Mkhwanazi brought down Motjeka Madisha in the area. Ricardo Nascimento stepped up and made no mistake from the spot kick.

The Students pressed forward in the closing stages of the game but were unable to create any clear-cut chances as the game went into the break 1-0 in favour of Sundowns.

Sundowns came out with intent in the second half as Sphelele Mkhulise managed to test Mhlongo from just outside the box, but he failed to beat the Wits keeper with his effort.

Hunt made a double substitution in the 46th minute when he took off Kgaogelo Sekgota and Lorenzo Gordinho for Rowan Human and Zitha Macheke.

Onyango was called into action in the 52nd minute when he read the danger to rush off his line to clear the ball from danger as Hotto made his way into the box.

Mosimane made his first change of the game when Keletso Makgalwa came on to replace Vilakazi, while Wits brought on Bienvenu Eva Nga to replace Haashim Domingo.

Wits had a good chance to level matters in the 67th minute but Terrence Dzvukamanja’s flick sailed just over the crossbar.

Sundowns then opted for fresh legs in the 72nd minute when Andile Jali and Lyle Lakay came on to replace Themba Zwane and Mkhulise.

Wits then levelled matters four minutes later when Dzvukamanja stripped Motjeka Madisha from the ball before racing down the field to slot the ball past Onyango.

Sundowns then made it 2-1 in the 80th minute when Onyango played a long ball forward to Makgalwa, who slotted it into an empty net after an error from Mhlongo.

Hunt’s side then levelled matters for the second time five minutes later when Dzvukamanja’s skilfully beat his market to fire the ball past Onyango from close range.

Lakay then sealed Sundowns’ place in the final after firing his curling free kick last Mhlongo in injury time as the game ended 3-2.
