Football legends Andrew Cole, Ashley Cole and John Terry have been inducted into the Premier League’s Hall of Fame.

The two men were chosen from a shortlist of fifteen former players following the combination of Premier League awards panel voting and global fan votes.

They become the 23rd and 24th inductees, joining Ashley Cole, who was also awarded the league’s top distinction this year.

On Tuesday, the three former England players will get recognition at a London event.

With 187 goals in 414 games, Cole ranks fourth all-time in Premier League history. He also won five titles while playing for Manchester United.

In his first Premier League season, the 52-year-old earned the Golden Boot while playing for Newcastle, among other clubs.

“My dad wanted me to play cricket, but I said, ‘No dad, I think I’m good at football’,” said Cole.

“Looking back at my career always fills me with great pride and puts a smile on my face.”

Terry, 43, has captained Chelsea to five Premier League titles, making him the most successful captain in Chelsea history.

With 492 top-flight appearances, he is the league’s all-time highest-scoring defender with 41 goals, and he owns the record for the most Premier League clean sheets (214).

“I was lucky to share a dressing room with so many top players,” he said. “To captain a club like Chelsea and achieve what we did as a team is so special to me.”

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said Cole and Terry were “worthy additions” to the Hall of Fame.

Masters said Cole was “among the greatest strikers we have seen” while Terry helped transform Chelsea into a Premier League force.

The Hall of Fame was launched in 2021, with inaugural inductees including David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Alan Shearer.

Former Chelsea captain John Terry will begin working with the club’s academy in January in a consultancy role.

Terry, who won 17 trophies over a glittering 19-year career at Stamford Bridge, has been out of work after leaving Aston Villa on the eve of the new season in order to pursue a managerial career.

That has yet to come to fruition, so the 41-year-old has agreed to return to his boyhood club in a part-time position where he will combine an on-field coaching role with mentoring of the club’s academy players.

Terry will continue with other commitments alongside the role.

Chelsea’s head of youth development Neil Bath said: “We are delighted to be welcoming John back to Cobham in a role that will involve coaching and mentoring the next generation of young players in our Academy.

“It goes without saying that John’s experience in the game, both as a world-class player and more recently as an assistant coach in the Premier League, will be invaluable for everyone in the building.

“He will be a great mentor for our players and a fantastic asset to our coaching staff. We can’t wait for him to get started.”

Terry, who joined the club as a 14-year-old, made 717 appearances, 500 of them as captain, and won five Premier League titles and a Champions League.

He left in 2017 to join Aston Villa where he went on to become Dean Smith’s assistant before leaving in July in the hope of landing a managerial position.

Terry told Villa’s official website: “It has been a tremendous honour and privilege to have spent these last three years at Aston Villa, but I feel now is the right time to make the extremely difficult decision to move on.

“I want to be as respectful to the manager and everyone at Aston Villa as I can and, having given my future serious consideration over the summer, I genuinely don’t feel it is fair to move into a new season without being certain of seeing that through.

“My immediate plan is to spend some quality time with my family and, thereafter, hopefully take up some invitations to visit clubs and managers around Europe to develop my aim and objective of becoming a manager.

“It has always been my ambition to move into football management and, providing the right opportunity presents itself, I feel ready to take up such a challenge.”

Legendary boss Chris Wilder left the Blades last month, with Paul Heckingbottom taking over on an interim basis until the end of the season.

According to the Mirror, the Bramall Lane hierarchy is keen to appoint a big name as it aims for a quick return to the Premier League.

Having endured a miserable second season back in the top flight, failing to win until January and collecting just 14 points from 30 games in all, the Blade’s relegation is an inevitability.

Since October 2018, Terry has been part of Dean Smith’s coaching staff at Aston Villa, who he helped to promotion from the Championship via the playoffs that season and top-flight survival on the final day last year.

Terry has been open about his desire to manage one day, and it is thought that Villa will not stand in his way should a suitable opportunity arise.

The ex-England skipper, who won 78 caps for his country, ended his playing with a single campaign at Villa.

That followed a 20-year spell at Chelsea during which he made over 700 appearances and captained the Blues to five Premier League titles and Champions League success.

Aston Villa assistant manager John Terry has urged his former club Chelsea to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

The Borussia Dortmund winger is expected to depart Signal Iduna Park before the start of next season, with Chelsea among the clubs interested in the England international.

Sancho has scored 14 goals and provided 15 assists in the Bundesliga this term, helping BVB challenge for the title.

And Terry, who also praised the impact made by Chelsea’s academy graduates in 2019-20, says he would love to see the forward lining up at Stamford Bridge next season.

‘I think the young lads have shown their potential,’ he told Frank Khalid. ‘We spoke at the start of the season about the likes of Tammy [Abraham] and Mason [Mount] coming into the squad and they’ve shown that they’re capable of playing.

‘I think Sancho is one of the best young players in the world at the moment, so he’d be a great addition to Chelsea’s squad.

‘It would make us better as well, but the ones that have come through, the Billy Gilmours, Tammy, Mason, Reece [James], it’s endless isn’t it? There have been so many positives this season.

‘So I think every Chelsea fan, since I came through the ranks, that’s all Chelsea fans wanted to see: the youth team players and the younger generation coming through and making their first team debuts. We’ve seen that in abundance this year.

‘It’ s been incredible because we said there was no one better, to give Lamps [Frank Lampard] the job. With [assistant manager] Jody Morris as well, he has someone who knows the younger players and works with them at the youth team and U18 level as well.

‘I think it’s been a good mix. I think the expectation has been excellent because the group that they’ve had this year have done really, really well.’

The 38-year-old took his first step towards coaching this season as Dean Smith’s assistant, following the ex-Brentford chief’s appointment as Aston Villa manager.

Together they have led the Birmingham club to the Championship play-off final, where they will face Derby County at Wembley on Monday.

talkSPORT has reported that Terry has opened talks with the Riverside hierarchy over succeeding Tony Pulis, who left Boro at the end of his contract last week.

Other candidates for the role include Jonathan Woodgate, Chris Hughton and Gabriel Batistuta, but Terry is also in the frame despite not being considered a favourite by the bookies.

During a 19-year spell at Stamford Bridge as a player, Terry won 15 major trophies to become Chelsea’s most decorated captain.

It was announced on Wednesday that Drogba would retire from the game at the age of 40 following a professional career spanning two decades, the peak years of which the Ivorian spent at Stamford Bridge.

In nine seasons across two spells, Drogba won a dozen major honours, including four Premier League titles and a famous Champions League triumph in 2012.

And Lampard, a key figure alongside the striker in the most successful era in Chelsea’s history, paid a glowing tribute to his former team-mate.

‘I get asked a lot who are the greatest players you played with. One retired relatively recently in John Terry, and the other is Didier Drogba,’ Derby County manager Lampard told a news conference.

‘He is the most incredible player. He’s a monster in the dressing room.

‘He won Chelsea countless titles, finals, semi-finals. He always turned up on the big occasion. He should be so proud of his career.

‘On top of that he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, men that I have played with. He is a friend, unselfish, humble, tough…I could speak all day about Didier Drogba.

However, speculation has mounted that the former England captain could return to Villa Park as assistant manager to Thierry Henry, who is the favourite to take over from sacked boss Steve Bruce.

Such rumours are sure to increase after Terry took to Instagram to confirm he is hanging up his boots.

Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has admitted that the loss of John Terry has been difficult for the club to deal with.

Terry, who spent his entire career with Chelsea, left to join Aston Villa at the end of last season.

The former Chelsea captain was a constant at the club for 19 seasons. He was also very successful, winning five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups and featured in Champions League and Europa League-winning campaigns.

Despite his role in the history of the Blues, Terry was restricted to just nine league appearances in his final season, but Conte has now revealed the impact that the defender had off the field.

The admission was made after Terry paid a visit to Chelsea’s training ground in Cobham this week to try to lift the morale of a team that has club having lost four of their last five league games, dropping them to fifth on the table.

‘For us, it was a big loss,” Conte said of the former England captain.

‘I tried to keep him for another season but he wanted to play and I understood this. I wished him the best and for his family.

‘JT’s role last season was incredible. He didn’t play a lot of games but despite this his commitment was incredible, he helped me a lot. We are talking about a player with great experience.

‘For John, Chelsea is home and he can come when he wants, the doors are open for him and for [all] the players that write the history of this club.

‘For me, it’s always a pleasure to see him and have a chat. It’s right also for the players to see him again, [he’s] their old captain.’

Gary Cahill is the right man to succeed John Terry as Chelsea captain on a permanent basis, manager Antonio Conte has said.

Gary Cahill has been named as the new Chelsea captain by head coach Antonio Conte.

The centre-back skippered the side for much of last season, with John Terry largely restricted to a back-up role, and he has now been given the armband on a full-time basis.

Cahill has enjoyed a highly successful spell at Stamford Bridge since signing from Bolton Wanderers in 2012, and Conte believes he has shown himself to be captain material.

‘I think that it’s right to continue with Cahill, if he plays, it’s right he’s the captain,’ said Conte, as quoted by The London Evening Standard.

‘Why? Because he stayed in Chelsea for many years and played a lot of games and showed good characteristics to be this.’

However, Conte urged Chelsea’s other senior players to take on greater leadership roles during his second season at the club.

‘I think also we can have other captains in our team, it could be [Cesar] Azpilicueta, [David] Luiz, and also, in the future, it could be Thibaut Courtois, Cesc Fabregas,’ he said.

‘I think every single player must improve in this [being personalities in the dressing room] and take more responsibility because we lost big players and we need now to find these new players to create this fundamental for Chelsea. It is very important for our future success to create this base.’

Terry ended his 22-year association with Chelsea when his contract expired at the end of last season, going on to join Aston Villa this month.

Conte admits he would have been happy for the defender to stay at the club, but accepted his desire was to play regular first-team football.

‘There was a possibility to stay with us because I was very happy to have another season with John,’ he said. ‘But I respected his choice.

‘He loves football, to enjoy training sessions, to push. I told him, ‘when you have this desire in your heart and your head, continue to play. When you decide to stop playing, you finish’.’

Terry has confessed to a long-term ambition to return to Chelsea as manager and Conte believes he would thrive in the dugout.

‘I think he could have the right characteristics to become a great manager,’ he added. ‘He worked with great managers in his career and I think he learned a lot about football. He could be a great manager in the future.’
