From dazzling forwards and creative midfielders to commanding defenders, a new generation of young prospects are taking the world by storm, writes Dylan Appolis.

RIO NGUMOHA
Club: Liverpool
Age: 17
Position: Left winger
Country of origin: England

Liverpool teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha is a highly promising talent and one of the top prospects in English football. Ngumoha’s rapid rise through the ranks at Liverpool has been nothing short of remarkable. He has already made significant strides in his professional career, having broken into the Reds’ senior team this season. The 17-year-old made history by becoming Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer, and his explosive pace, technical skill, composure in front of goal, and impact on the field, suggest he could potentially become a world-class talent.

IBRAHIM RABBAJ
Club: Chelsea
Age: 16
Position: Attacking midfielder
Country of origin: Morocco

Ibrahim Rabbaj has quickly risen through the ranks at Chelsea and is one of their most exciting prospects. The 16-year-old has already earned comparisons to Lionel Messi due to his exceptional dribbling, quick feet, creativity, and versatility as an attacking midfielder or winger, making him one of the top prospects to watch in the future. Although he has not yet made his senior debut for Chelsea, Rabbaj has the potential to make a difference in the Blues squad if he continues his development.

CLAUDIO ECHEVERRI
Club: Bayer Leverkusen (on loan from Manchester City)
Age: 19
Position: Attacking midfielder
Country of origin: Argentina

Claudio Echeverri is regarded as one of South America’s brightest young playmakers, which secured him a move to Manchester City, but he was loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen to further his development. Echeverri made a name for himself following his impressive performances for River Plate and the Argentina youth team during the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, in which he won the Bronze Boot. Like Ibrahim Rabbaj, Echeverri has also drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi thanks to his close control and strong dribbling ability, vision, and playmaking skill, and his keen eye for goal, which earned him the nickname “El Diablito”.

FRANCESCO CAMARDA
Club: Lecce (on loan from AC Milan)
Age: 17
Position: Centre-forward
Country of origin: Italy

Francesco Camarda has been considered the new golden boy of Italian football and has been compared to legends such as Michael Owen and Filippo Inzaghi. The Italian has already written his name in football’s history books after he became the youngest debutant in Serie A history at 15 years and 260 days and the youngest Italian debutant in the UEFA Champions League. Camarda has already shown glimpses of what he is capable of. He has racked up a reputation for his deadly goal-scoring ability with both feet, his physical presence and aerial threat, and his exceptional ball control.

GEOVANY QUENDA
Club: Sporting CP
Age: 18
Position: Right winger
Country of origin: Portugal

After rising through the ranks at Sporting CP, Geovany Quenda has been labelled as one of Portugal’s best young players. Quenda already has elite dribbling ability, exceptional pace, high football IQ, and versatility to play on the wing and at wing-back, which earned him the crown as the Best Young Player of the 24/25 Portuguese League season The 18-year-old has the potential to become a world-class player, and he will continue his development at Chelsea next season after securing a £40 million move to the Blues.

RODRIGO MORA
Club: FC Porto
Age: 18
Position: Attacking midfield
Country of origin: Portugal

Rodrigo Mora is one of the brightest young talents to come through FC Porto’s academy ranks and is considered a big talent for the future of Portuguese football. The 18-year-old has already broken into the first team but is yet to cement a regular starting berth. Mora has been praised for his overall gameplay, vision, and maturity, and has been compared to Barcelona star Lamine Yamal for his goal-scoring and playmaking abilities. However, he has room to grow and improve in the hopes of becoming the next best player for his country.

SVERRE NYPAN
Club: Middlesbrough (on loan from Manchester City)
Age: 18
Position: Central midfield
Country of origin: Norway

Sverre Nypan is considered one of Norway’s top prospects and has been labelled as the ‘next Martin Odegaard’. The 18-year-old completed his move to Manchester City from Rosenborg BK for a deal worth £12.5m, but he was subsequently loaned out to Middlesbrough. The Norwegian already has an exceptional football IQ, likes to dribble with the ball, is known for his technical ability, and is versatile enough to play anywhere in the midfield, whether as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, or false nine. Nypan has the potential to become one of the top midfielders in Europe, having already shown glimpses of elite-level football.

AYYOUB BOUADDI
Club: Lille
Age: 18
Position: Central midfield
Country of origin: France

Ayyoub Bouaddi is one of Europe’s top young talents and has been lighting up the stage in Ligue 1 with Lille. The 18-year-old has been described as the club’s most exciting talent to come through the ranks at Lille since Eden Hazard. Bouaddi made history by becoming the youngest player in Ligue 1 since 1981 and the youngest Lille player to debut in a European club competition. His incredible potential is limitless, and it will be hard for the French outfit to keep their hands on him.

JULIEN DURANVILLE
Club: Borussia Dortmund
Age: 19
Position: Left winger
Country of origin: Belgium

Julien Duranville is one of the most highly rated young players to come out of Belgian football in years. The 19-year-old is already considered a potential contender for future Ballon d’Or awards. Despite several injuries during his time at Borussia Dortmund, Duranville has already proven himself to be a top talent. He has made a number of appearances for Dortmund’s senior team and earned call-ups to the Belgian national team. While Duranville is still in the development stage of his career, he has shown his electric pace, good close control, and tricky dribbling ability with a strong work rate.

FRANCO MASTANTUONO
Club: Real Madrid
Age: 18
Position: Right winger
Country of origin: Argentina

Argentine prodigy Franco Mastantuono has established himself as one of the world’s brightest young talents. The 18-year-old secured a move to Real Madrid during the offseason and has already secured his place in the senior team with some impressive performances for Xabi Alonso’s side. Mastantuono has been described as Argentina’s future. He has already played for the senior national team, where he was given the iconic No.10 jersey, previously worn by Lionel Messi. The Argentine could potentially become one of the world’s best, with his masterful dribbling ability, vision, set-piece ability, and versatility in playing free in an attacking role.

The United States side are looking to bounce back after they played out to a goalless draw against Al Ahly SC at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Javier Mascherano’s side are now set to welcome the Portuguese outfit in their second group stage encounter when they meet at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Inter will go into this fixture sitting at the foot of Group A with one point after their first match.

“We will (go into the game) with a lot of desire, a lot of excitement,” Busquets said.

“We know it’s going to be a very difficult match. But we can draw on a huge amount of experience in international tournaments from many players. We also have good young players. We’ll try to do better (than in our first match) and to have that enthusiasm, that ambition.”

“Porto have a very defined system, which the coach [Martin Anselmi] has given them.

“They have very good players. They’ve also signed new players, they’ve strengthened, and we know it’s going to be very difficult. They are a team that competes almost every year to win its domestic title, where they also have great teams like Sporting and Benfica.

“We’ll try to be as solid as possible, to do our best with teamwork, and then have some individuality. Above all, we want be solid and try to keep a clean sheet.”

Kick-off has been set for 6pm on Thursday.

Palmeiras sensation Estevao is looking forward to taking on his idol Lionel Messi at the Club World Cup.

Estevao will be in action when he debuts in the Club World Cup for Palmeiras as they prepare to take on FC Porto in their opening fixture at the MetLife Stadium on Monday.

The 18-year-old has been in fine form for Palmeiras throughout the 2024-25 season, having scored 11 goals and registering five assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

The Brazilian wonderkid will now have the opportunity to showcase his talent on a global stage and he is relishing the chance to play against some of the best teams in the world.

“I’m thrilled to be playing at a tournament of this calibre, and to know that Palmeiras are among the best teams on the planet,” Estevao said,

“It’s going to be a great learning experience for me, having the chance to play against teams from Europe and other parts of the world, as well as familiar foes from South America.

“I’m going to be playing against one of the best players (Lionel Messi) of all time. It’s going to be unbelievable being out there on the pitch with him.

“I don’t like that comparison, it’s just something from when we were kids. I’ve been gradually moving away from it.

“But make no bones about it, being out there with one of my idols… I used to watch pretty much every game he played. That’s going to be unforgettable.”

He added: “Competitiveness is our biggest strength; it’s what this Palmeiras team do.”

“Through Abel and the senior players, I’ve learnt a lot about the importance of putting in the hard graft and staying committed. If a team have togetherness and feel connected on the pitch, things start to flow and that comes through hard work.

“Of course, the older players demand things from us and command respect, and we younger players also demand things from them,” he concluded.

Thirty-two of the best club sides on the planet go head-to-head to be crowned Club World Cup champions, writes Nick Said.

The Club World Cup will be staged across the United States from 14 June to 13 July as the first expanded edition of the tournament is played with a reported $1 billion pot of prize money.

The biggest clubs and the best players from each of FIFA’s six confederations will battle it out for supremacy, including our very own Mamelodi Sundowns.

Here is a rundown of the groups and the prospects of the teams.

GROUP A
Teams: Palmeiras (BRA), FC Porto (POR), Al Ahly (EGY), Inter Miami (USA)

Let’s be honest here, Inter Miami are only playing in this tournament because they have Lionel Messi in their squad and FIFA want his star quality at the Club World Cup. They did not earn their place on the pitch. But Africa’s Egyptian giants Al Ahly may well look at this pool as an opportunity, with Miami beatable, and the two good, but not great, sides in Brazilian outfit Palmeiras and FC Porto from Portugal. This is a real chance to advance to the round of 16.

GROUP B
Teams: Paris Saint-Germain (FRA), Atlético Madrid (ESP), Botafogo (BRA), Seattle Sounders (USA)

The two overwhelming favourites in this pool will be French giants Paris Saint-Germain and the always competitive Atlético Madrid from Spain. Botafogo exemplifies a typical Brazilian team with talented players abound, but their best prospects have long been exported to Europe. Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders will do well to make an impression.

GROUP C
Teams: Bayern Munich (GER), Auckland City (NZL), Boca Juniors (ARG), Benfica (POR)

Everyone in this pool will beat New Zealand side Auckland City. Bayern Munich should have ample star quality on the big stage, leaving perhaps a shootout between famed Argentine side Boca Juniors and Benfica for a top two spot. That looks a tough one to call, with the smart money perhaps on the South American side. Both clubs are steeped in history and it will be fascinating to see them go head-to-head.

GROUP D
Teams: Flamengo (BRA), Espérance (TUN), Chelsea (ENG), LAFC (USA)/Club América (MEX)

Mexican side Club León were axed from this pool as they share ownership with compatriots Pachuca, who are in Group H, which violates FIFA rules at their competitions. One had to go and León were given the boot. Chelsea will be obvious favourites along with Brazilian side Flamengo, while Esperance will be tough to beat, but lack fire-power against top teams.

GROUP E
Teams: River Plate (ARG), Urawa Red Diamonds (JPN), Monterrey (MEX), Inter Milan (ITA)

A real mix of teams in this group with four continents represented, but Inter Milan from Italy and River Plate of Argentina will be heavily fancied to advance in the top two. Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds are a tricky but beatable opponent and Monterrey from Mexico will be set on making an impression as they are arguably the weakest team in the pool.

GROUP F
Teams: Fluminense (BRA), Borussia Dortmund (GER), Ulsan HD (KOR), Mamelodi Sundowns (RSA)

Many people will view Mamelodi Sundowns as the underdogs in the group, though they must believe South Korean side Ulsan HD are beatable. Borussia Dortmund have had a poor season in the Bundesliga, but are a quality squad, while Fluminense are a tough opponent. Top two looks a stretch, but they have to believe they can pull it off. Sundowns have the potential to advance, but can they rise to the challenge of defending against higher-calibre attackers than they are accustomed to?

GROUP G
Teams: Manchester City (ENG), Wydad Casablanca (MAR), Al Ain (UAE), Juventus (ITA)

There is a South African flavour to this group as well with Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca coached by Rulani Mokwena. They will believe they can beat UAE side Al Ain but are up against two established European giants in Juventus and Manchester City. Mokwena is a confirmed disciple of Pep Guardiola, and has said several times Guardiola is his coaching hero, so this will be an incredibly special day for him when the two teams meet.

GROUP H
Teams: Real Madrid (ESP), Al Hilal (KSA), Pachuca (MEX), FC Salzburg (AUT)

Real Madrid are the standout team in a pool that is otherwise tough to call with the three other participants. Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal have the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, João Cancelo, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, while Pachuca and Salzburg will also fancy their chances of going through. But outside of Madrid, those are three evenly-matched teams.

HOW THE TEAMS QUALIFIED

Wydad Casablanca (MAR) – CAF Champions League winner

Harry Maguire scored a stoppage-time equaliser to help Manchester United earn a 3-3 draw against FC Porto in the Europa League.

With two goals in the opening 20 minutes, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund had given the visitors an incredible start.

However, Samu Omorodion’s double after Pepe’s goal put Porto back in the game had the English giants on the verge of defeat.

After that, Bruno Fernandes, United’s captain, was sent off for the second straight game; nonetheless, a corner header by Maguire allowed the 10 men to salvage a point.

After being held at home by FC Twente last week, Ten Hag’s club has now opened their Europa League season with two draws, placing them 21st out of 36 teams.

Furthermore, their manager will be under no less stress ahead of Sunday’s difficult Premier League trip to Aston Villa given the way they gave up after getting off to a quick start.

After winning the League Cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons as manager at Old Trafford, the former Ajax manager ended United’s six-year trophy drought. He has boldly defended his record.

Ten Hag also argued that he ought to be assessed at the conclusion of the season.

Even if Porto was the ones who created their own demise, Ten Hag could not have asked for a better beginning.

After a poor 2023–24 season, Rashford has shown signs of returning to his former form, as he opened the score with his fourth goal of the year.

The England forward darted past two Porto defenders and attempted a shot that Portugal’s top scorer, Diogo Costa, ought to have blocked.

After that, Rashford created the second goal when he feed Hojlund, who once more past Costa at his near post with a strong strike.

However, United’s two-goal lead was erased in seven minutes, just as Ten Hag was starting to feel relieved on the sidelines.

After Andre Onana made a fantastic save to keep Noussair Mazraoui’s header from going in, Pepe cut the deficit by stooping to head home the rebound.

If Omorodian hadn’t failed his physical, which caused his transfer from Atletico Madrid to go through, he may have been starting for Chelsea in the Premier League.

However, he has scored seven goals in his first six games for Porto, and his spectacular header tied the score for the home team.

After the interval, worse was to follow for the visiting team and their struggling manager.

Alejandro Garnacho took Rashford’s place at halftime, spoiling his good performance with an eye towards the Villa match.

On minute fifty, a lively counterattack by Porto tore apart the United defence once more.

Pepe dashed to the left, past Lisandro Martinez, and Omorodian, who had managed to get away from Matthijs de Ligt’s grasp, fired a low cross beyond Onana.

When Fernandes got back to Portugal, he was given a second yellow card.

However, Ten Hag’s removal from the captaincy was the one who had the opportunity to keep his job.

In the ninetieth minute, Maguire made the greatest leap to slam home Eriksen’s corner in order to save a point.

Arsenal reached their first Champions League quarter-final since 2010 after beating FC Porto 4-2 in a penalty shootout at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.

After an intense second leg at the Emirates, the teams were tied at 1-1 on aggregate, but Raya made two saves in the shootout to crush the hearts of the two-time champions.

The home team converted all four of their penalties as the noise level skyrocketed, and the custodian dove full stretch to deny Wendell. He then duplicated the feat against Galeno.

Since the Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid Champions League final in 2016, this is the first time a match has been decided on penalties.

“You are very nervous, you are hoping for the best but you know that it (the shootout) is a bit of a lottery,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told TNT Sports.

“So happy. It has been 14 years (without reaching quarter-finals), which is a long time for a club like Arsenal and it shows how difficult it was. We really had to dig in to find the magic moment at the end.”

“We’ve been patient, worked so hard and a lot of people have made good decisions and showed courage in difficult moments and this is where you want to be,” he added.

Raya, on loan from Brentford, said it was a “great moment personally and collectively”.

“This means everything. You play football for these kind of things and I’m lucky to be playing for Arsenal, to be in the Champions League and to get through to the quarter-finals.”

Arteta’s Premier League leaders, who have scored 33 goals in their last eight league games, trailed 1-0 after the first leg and were not at their best against a well-organized Porto team.

Just before halftime, Leandro Trossard gave Arsenal an equaliser, demonstrating that their perseverance had paid off.

The squad led by Sergio Conceicao managed to keep the home team off the scoreboard for extended periods of time in the first half, creating enough opportunities of their own to give the eager spectators cause for concern.

In a rough first half, both teams had trouble getting going. Porto tried their hardest to slow down the action by taking their time on throw-ins and goal kicks, much to the annoyance of the home crowd.

After the home team’s first concerted effort, Arsenal defender Ben White headed over in the fourth minute, and captain Martin Odegaard struck the side netting ten minutes later.

However, Porto, who won the European Championship the last time around under Jose Mourinho in 2004, had several opportunities.

Moments after Evanilson’s long-range effort at goal bounced wide, he launched a soaring effort that Raya palmed away.

Declan Rice missed the mark with his header, and Pepe (the first 41-year-old to start in the Champions League as an outfield player) used the lightest touch on his head to deny Kai Havertz a chance to connect with a cross from White at the back post.

After some excellent work by Odegaard, who ducked past an opponent and fed Trossard with a precisely weighted low pass into the box, the breakthrough eventually arrived in the 41st minute.

To defuse the situation, Trossard calmly sent a right-footed shot past custodian Diogo Costa and into the far corner of the net.

The visitors, who had made 22 prior tries to win a game in England, came out strong in the second half as Arsenal found it difficult to establish themselves.

When Odegaard dinked the ball into an empty net halfway through the second half, Arsenal believed they had doubled their lead, but Havertz’s foul on Pepe caused the goal to be disallowed.

Shortly after, Raya stopped Francisco Conceicao’s attempt from outside the penalty area as Porto surged forward.

In the 83rd minute, Arteta substituted Gabriel Jesus, and the former Manchester City player almost scored with his first touch.

Bukayo Saka attempted a classic curling shot as Arsenal pressed for the win, but it was punched back into the middle, and Odegaard mishandled the rebound when it was in a good position.

Early in the extra period, the home team appeared more threatening, but Porto still posed a threat when they broke, as substitute Mehdi Taremi missed the mark.

For the second overtime period, Arteta substituted Eddie Nketiah and Oleksandr Zinchenko; nevertheless, neither team was able to produce a winner, therefore penalties were used.

Arsenal were left stunned after Galeno scored in stoppage time to hand FC Porto a 1-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

After setting himself up with a few touches, the Brazilian winger curled a stunning finish past David Raya’s dejected full-stretch dive and into the net.

Galeno struck a shot off the post and mishandled the rebound, giving Sergio Conceicao’s team the advantage at halftime.

Arsenal was greatly let down by that, but Galeno scored flawlessly in the game’s final four extra minutes.

The home team had earlier attempted to take the lead in the first half, but Nico Gonzalez’s thunderous strike had gone over the bar.

On March 12, Arsenal will play the second leg at Emirates Stadium in an attempt to make it to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009–2010.

Arsenal lacked a perfect finish, but they had plenty of set-piece possibilities. Leandro Trossard blasted over the bar in response to a corner from Declan Rice in one of those scenarios.

Robert Lewandowski was hurt in the first half, so the former Manchester City forward took his place.

Torres then scored the game-winning goal just before halftime by driving in a pass from Ilkay Gundogan.

In the second half, Porto tried to tie the game, and Barcelona had Gavi sent off in the 93rd minute, but they were able to hold on.

The home team wasn’t able to score because goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen blocked Wendell’s shot and deflected Galeno’s curling shot.

Lamine Yamal, a 15-year-old from Barcelona, made more history during his impressive breakout season.

He was the youngest player to start a Champions League game. He was 16 years and 83 days old.

Liverpool will have a chance to exact their revenge on Real Madrid for beating them in last year’s Champions League final, as they will face the holders again in the round of 16 following the conclusion of the draw on Monday.

On the other hand, Paris Saint-Germain will play Bayern Munich in a rematch of the 2020 final, which the German giants won.

City will play RB Leipzig and the winner of the 2021 Champions League. Borussia Dortmund, a German team, was also put in the same group as Chelsea.

Last week, Tottenham Hotspur won their group thanks to a last-second goal in a game away at Marseille. This week, they were paired against AC Milan, the Italian champions.

The Champions League final for this season will be held in Istanbul on 10 June next year.

The final was supposed to be held in a Turkish city in 2020 and again in 2021. However, each time, the game was moved to Portugal because of the pandemic.

Inter Milan will play Porto, Eintracht Frankfurt will play Napoli, and Benfica will play Club Brugge, a team that was not expected to do well in the tournament.

All of the first legs of the last 16 matches will happen in February, and the second legs will happen in March.
