Chippa United defender Diamond Thopola says he is frustrated over the uncertainty of football in South Africa due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 30-year-old is currently on loan at Orlando Pirates, but injury has plagued his season and he has been limited to four matches in all competitions this season.

The Absa Premiership along with all football have since been suspended due to Covid-19.

However, the South African Football Association (Safa) and the PSL have recently set up a task team to oversee the possible return of football in the country.

The Pirates loanee has urged South Africans to comply with the current lockdown regulations.

‘It’s really a difficult situation, to be honest, because we don’t know what will happen in the near future,’ Thopola told SuperSport.com.

‘This pandemic is a very serious thing that the world, including our country, is facing. All we can do is to follow the instructions from our leaders [health officials] and the president [Cyril Ramaphosa], and stay at home and be safe.’

The former Thanda Royal Zulu right back admits he misses being on the field but is now afforded the time to return to fitness as he continues his rehabilitation from the safety of his home.

‘Otherwise, we as Chippa United players have been given a programme which we are following while at home and we are being monitored every day,’ he said.

‘Hopefully, things will get back to normal soon because we seriously miss our normal daily routines. We miss being on the field of play and we also miss football, but it is what it is.’

The 30-year-old, whose contract was terminated by Sundowns in 2017, has now sealed a deal with Chippa.

The Chili Boys have also bolstered their squad by capturing the services of Diamond Thopola, Meshack Maphangule, Sandile Mthethwa, Augustine Kwem, Kevin Moyo and Elvis Moyo.

The Chili Boys released the following statement on the matter, which reads:

The arrival of gifted Zimbabwean international twins Kevin and Elvis Moyo has reasserted Chippa United’s intentions to finish in the Top eight in the upcoming season. The Moyo twins, who play at centre back and left back respectively, were signed from Zimbabwean football giants, FC Platinum.

The club also welcomes our former captain and Bafana Bafana international Diamond Thopola, while the midfield maestro Meshack Maphangule and young defender Sandile Mthethwa have also joined us from Orlando Pirates.

Another exciting signing is that of former Sundowns left back Mzikayise Mashaba and Nigerian international striker Augustine Kwem.

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departures of a host of first team players, while also revealing that another two players have been placed on the club’s transfer list.

Gladwin Shitolo, Phetso Maphanga, Diamond Thopola and Caio Marcelo were all sold to join Chippa United, while Thabo Matlaba was released after the expiration of his contract. Mpho Makola and Meshack Maphangule were the two player who the club revealed are surplus to requirements and will be sold if an offer comes in.

The Soweto giants confirmed earlier in the week that Abbubaker Mobara, Jackson Mabokgwane, Thabo Qalinge and Ayanda Nkosi have all been released by the club ahead of the 2019-20 season as they look to reshape their squad ahead of a renewed title push next season.

The club confirmed the host of departures on Friday with Matlaba not having his contract renewed after he refused to take a pay cut, ending his seven-year stay with Pirates.

The Sea Robbers have been heavily linked with a host of players including Maritzburg United midfielders Siphesihle Ndlovu and Fortune Makaringe.

The Buccaneers have made great strides under Milutin Sredojevic and the club’s chairman, dr Irvin Khoza, seems to be backing his manager in the transfer market as the club looks to compete not just for the league title but also in the Caf Champions League and domestic cup competitions, which requires a big squad.

Festival as the player is affectionately known largely featured as a substitute in his 21 appearances during the 2017-18 campaign, having played second fiddle to the likes of Innocent Maela and Mthokozisi Dube.

The Soweto giants are in the process of trimming their squad, having recently parted ways with Brighton Mhlongo, Ayanda Gcaba, Riyaad Norodien and Marc van Heerden.

‘Everything is up to Pirates, but I am sure that he will stay at Pirates next season,’ Rasimphi was quoted as saying by Isolezwe.

The arrival of nine new players, which include Brilliant Khuzwayo, Kudakwashe Mahachi, Asavela Mbekile, Linda Mntambo, Paseka Mako, Vincent Pule, Meshack Maphangule and Ben Motshwari has cast doubt into Matlaba’s future at the club.

The former Bafana Bafana international, however, revealed that he has no knowledge of rumours doing the rounds as he continues his pre-season preparation with Pirates.

‘I am currently training with the team as we are in Mpumalanga,’ he told goal.

‘I don’t know about me leaving Pirates and I don’t know where the reports come from because I’m still a Pirates player and I’m dedicated to the team.

‘I will continue to fight for the jersey and give my all, I cannot talk about reports that I do not see eye-to-eye with the technical team because I don’t know it.

‘What I want to clarify is that they are our coaches and I respect them very much.

‘As we prepare for a new season here, I want to work hard to please them so they can bring me back and play,’ he concluded.

Having unearthed a number of gems, Augusto Palacios believes that a winning Orlando Pirates outfit is key to promoting youth players to the senior team.

A number of Pirates’ youth development products have flourished this season under coach Milutin Sredojevic, which include fullbacks Innocent Maela and Mthokozisi Dube, which led to Palacios’ claims that development at Pirates is currently being made easier.

‘For development‚ when a coach comes [to a club] and he has the pressure to win trophies, he will not have an interest to look at the young players‚’ he told Sowetan Live.

‘But if the team are doing well and winning‚ it’s going to be easier to adapt players from the development to the first team. And I understand that it’s like this all over the world.

‘You need to promote at the right time‚ when the team is doing well‚ and where there is space for that player to play in.

‘For example‚ Pirates have Diamond Thopola and Dube competing at right-back and doing well. So now where are you going to field [a promoted player]?

‘Promotion is not promotion because you want it.

‘At the moment you have Lyle Foster‚ the two Zambian players [Justin Shonga and Augustine Mulenga] and Thamsanqa Gabuza – you have four strikers.

‘When I was coach [in 2012] I had five – we had Benni McCarthy‚ Tokelo Rantie‚ Bongani Ndulula‚ Ndumiso Mabena and Thulasizwe Mbuyane. So it was very difficult to promote.

‘For me‚ you promote players at the right time and moment‚ and for what the squad requires,’ he concluded.

Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza has revealed why Thabo Rakhale was shipped off to Chippa United on a loan deal and suggested that the winger could return to the Soweto giants.

Pirates confirmed a swap deal with the Chilli Boys that saw Rakhale move to Teboho Moloi’s outfit, while defensive duo Diamond Thopola and Phetso Maphanga head to the Mayfair-based outfit.

‘Football is not about how many tricks you did but it is about goals scored and goals created,’ Khoza told Independent Media.

‘Rakhale holds the ball for so long while the likes of [Thamsanqa] Gabuza are making runs in the box.

‘You need to take on players like Thabo Qalinge and Luvuyo Memela do. I think Chippa United’s style of play will suit Rakhale. We gave him the chance.

‘It is not the end of him at Pirates. He is on loan at Chippa which means we can bring him back if he does well,’ he concluded.

Moloi revealed his excitement at the prospect of linking up with the player known as Jomo in the footballing fraternity.

‘I know how to get the best out of Jomo. I have a good relationship with him. I’ve known him for a long time, since his days with Sivutsa.

‘He is a very good footballer. You don’t need to give him a lot of instructions. You just have to give him freedom and guide him,’ he concluded.
