The 25-year-old spent the second half of the 2018-19 season on loan at Maritzburg United before returning to the Citizens at the end of the season.

However, after meeting with the Citizens management over his future, the two parties agreed to part ways by mutual consent.

Kateregga’s contract with the Mother City-based outfit was set to expire in June 2021, which meant he still had two more years remaining on his deal.

However, the winger has opted to search for a new club following his stint at City, during which he found the back of the net once from 13 appearances in all competitions since moving to the club from AFC Leopards in January 2018.

‘I will not be staying at Cape Town City this season,’ Kateregga told Goal.

‘We have mutually parted ways. We are agreed for my contract to be terminated.’

Meanwhile, City chairman John Commits said: ‘Kateregga is a free agent.

‘Ja, we’ve parted ways. Listen, we’ve transferred him to Maritzburg United, we had an option to take him back, which we didn’t exercise at a later stage. Ja, it’s been like that because we had too many foreigners so weren’t gonna take him back.

‘I don’t know if he’s got some new offers. I think he is going back to Uganda. In one of the big clubs there.’

The pacey winger, who was part of Uganda’s squad at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt recently, posted a farewell message to City on social media: ‘Thank you Cape Town City for the opportunity. I would never thank you enough. I wish the club the very best for the future.’

The Citizens have now secured two wins out of two in the Absa Premiership following their 3-1 victory over Leopards.

Goals from Ayanda Patosi, Allan Kateregga and Siphelele Mthembu cancelled out Mwape Musonda’s 22nd-minute equaliser to snatch all three points on home soil.

The win sees City move up into the top eight in the league standings with 13 points from 10 games, while the newly promoted side are placed 14th with nine points.

‘For the first 15 minutes we piled the pressure, pressed them high and did not allow them to play because they are a very unpredictable team,’ McCarthy said.

‘I watched them [Black Leopards] against [Kaizer] Chiefs, they played. If you allow them to play. I did not want us to let them settle in the game and I think we did that superbly.

‘We let them refer to the long balls and we were picking it up off. We started building and playing our game.’

The birthday boy credited the newly promoted outfit for their performance away from home, but was delighted to see his side continue their momentum from their last league game.

‘We deserved to be winners, but I have to give credit to [Black] Leopards for coming here and not sitting back. They held their own, they gave us a scare and pushed us all the way,’ he added.

‘In the moment that we were on it was always going to be difficult for them to get a point or all three points off us. We know this is the run of games that we are facing and it was a big opportunity for us to make the jump.

‘I think the quality of players that we have, we should be winning these games comfortably.’

Following the international break, Cape Town City will travel to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium when they take on Polokwane City in the Absa Premiership on 27 November.

The Citizens went into the clash on the back of a 3-0 thumping against AmaZulu, while Leopards succumbed to a 1-0 loss in their most recent clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

The home side started the brighter of the two teams and should have been ahead as early as the eighth minute when Ayanda Patosi’s inch-perfect cross found Sphelele Mthembu in the area, but the former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates striker guided his effort straight at the goalkeeper with Allan Kateregga missing the follow up.

City were not to be denied two minutes later when a swift attacking move saw Surprise Ralani find Patosi in the area, who made no mistake from within the area.

The home side were in full control of the game and should have doubled their lead in the 22nd minute but Patosi failed to pull the trigger from within the area, with Leopards striker Mwape Musonda levelling matters from the resultant counter-attack.

Patosi could have been on a hat-trick moments on the half-hour mark when a good patient attacking move saw Ralani cut the ball back into the area, but the former Lokeren midfielder headed his effort over the crossbar.

City deservedly regained the lead moments before half-time when Thabo Nodada found Kateregga in the area with the Ugandan winger making no mistake.

Leopards upped their tempo in search of the equaliser in the second-half, but a mixture of poor decision making and wasteful finishing saw the scoreline remain the same.

City defender Taariq Fielies was fortunate not to conceded a penalty when his poor backpass was almost capitalised on.

Mthembu managed to get his name on the scoresheet late on as he reacted quickest to nod home Roland Putsche’s knock on.

In the end, Benni McCarthy’s side maintained their lead to run out 3-1 victors to record only their third league victory of the campaign.

The 23-year-old, who previously played for Kenyan side AFC Leopards, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Mother City-based outfit.

City chairman John Comitis and coach Benni McCarthy are confident that Kateregga provides the club with more ammunition in attack, while also bringing a wealth of experience ahead of their opening Caf Confederation Cup campaign.

‘I sat with Benni and we discussed the need for a left-footed playmaker and winger that could add something unique going forward,’ Comitis revealed on the club’s official Twitter.

‘There were a few options for us in the market, but once Benni saw Kateregga play he basically just simply said “this is the one”.’

The Citizens have also secured the services of Bradley Ralani, Masoud Juma and Kwanda Mngonyama to their squad during the January transfer window.
