SoccerClub takes a look at the history of the Soweto derby ahead of this weekend’s mouth-watering clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium.
Take a look at facts and figures from South Africa’s ‘El Kasico’ as Chiefs and Pirates get ready to meet in the latest instalment of the Soweto derby:
2007 – The fastest goal in the history of the derby match came after just 19 seconds from Mabhudi Khenyeza for Chiefs in Durban in November 2007.
1975 – Herman Blaschke‚ the Namibian-born‚ was the first foreigner to score in the derby between Chiefs and Pirates‚ in 1975. Later the same year Zimbabwean Ebison Mugoyo also got a goal for the AmaKhosi. The last foreigner to score in a derby was the Colombian forward Leonard Castro who netted a brace in last weekends edition of the derby.
167 – The past number of derbies played, 68 won by Chiefs, 41 by Pirates and 53 draws along with five abandoned matches.
31 – Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala holds the record for the most Soweto derby appearances.
26 – Happy Jele is the record-holder for Pirates with most appearances (26) in the derby, having gone past the mark previously set by Lucky Lekgwathu (22)
19 – Pule ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe scored a record 19 time for Chiefs, while Pirates top goalscorer in the derbies is Jomo Sono with nine goals.
9 – There have been nine own goals only in the previous 146 derbies – the first from Orlando Pirates fullback Michael Yende in 1971 and the last from Tsepo Masilela.
8 – The record for the most number of derby matches in a single season was set in 1975. that year the two sides met eight times inside 12 months.
7 – The last coach to have sat on the bench of one of the derby teams having previously in his career‚ coached the other side was Vladimir Vermezovic. Others have included Kosta Papic‚ Walter da Silva‚ Ted Dumitru‚ Augusto Palacios and Joe Frickleton.
6 – The number of players to have scored for both sides in a derby, Gabriel Khoza, Blessing Mgidi, Jerry Sadike, Ace Khuse, Mark Maponyane and Marc Bachelor.
4 – Goals is the biggest winning margin in a derby, twice achieved by Amakhosi (7-3 in 1972 and 5-1 in 1975), and once by Pirates (5-1 in 1990).
3 – The last player to score a hat-trick in the derby was Jerry Sikhosana during the Buccaneers 4-1 win over Amakhosi back in November 1996.
2 – Alfred Jacobs (1970-71) and Fani Madida (1991-92) are the only to players that holds the distinction for having scored in four straight derbies.
1 – Percy ‘Chippa’ Moloi scored the very first goal in a Chiefs vs Pirates derby game back in 1970.
