Kaizer Chiefs defender Dillan Solomons says he is determined to improve his game to help contribute to the team’s success this season.

Solomons was the hero for Amakhosi this past weekend after he scored the equalising goal to earn his side a 1-1 draw against Zamalek SC in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Amakhosi will now turn their attention back to the Betway Premiership when they face Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old will be hoping to continue his form for Amakhosi in the hope of helping his side walk away with all three points.

“The CAF games have been a learning experience as we have a number of players getting their first taste of continental football,” Solomons told his club’s official website.

“It has been tough but we’ll take the results and move on with the determination to improve when the competition resumes next year.

“Personally, it has been a good few months for me. The heard work I did when I was injured is paying off now. Being out injured was not a good tie for me.

“But I am so happy to be involved now and to help contribute to the team. Scoring a goal was wonderful but I like getting assists, which I take pride in more.

“I really want to contribute even more, hopefully in the next two games before the break for the AFCON tournament.

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker says his side are confident heading into Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup second-leg against 15 de Agosto de Akonibe.

The Maroons will look to continue their winning run after their thrilling 4-3 victory over Golden Arrows at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Stellies and 15 de Agosto de Akonibe come into this match after they played out to a goalless draw in the first leg.

The two sides will battle to secure their place in the competition’s Group Stages when they square off at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

“We’re confident going into the game on Sunday,” Barker told his club’s official website. “We want to be competing on the continent at the highest level, so it’s important for us to get ourselves past our opposition and into the Group Stage.

“No game is easy, and we encountered [during the first leg] that they’re a difficult opponent. They’re very direct and possess a lot of physicality and aerial ability.

“We have to be aware of that, but at the same time, we’re playing at home, so we have to take the game to them and make sure we ask many questions, create chances, get our goals, and hopefully progress to the next round.

“It definitely helps us to be back at Athlone. It wasn’t easy playing in Equatorial Guinea, after a lot of travel in the air and on the bus, and the stadium, the pitch, and the weather were all challenging.

“We had to overcome a lot, and I felt we did well to get a draw from that game. At home, those factors are out of the way, so we have to be really sharp and fresh, and play with the energy and intensity that we need.”

Amakhosi are set to take on AS Simba in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary second round set to be played at the TP Mazembe Stadium on Saturday.

Chiefs recently announced the 22-man travelling squad for their trip to Lubumbashi, which included Khanyisa Mayo and Maboe.

Maboe has since reiterated that he is relishing the chance to represent Amakhosi on the continental stage after returning from injury.

“I’m happy that I’m back from injury and planning to work hard to catch up with the rest of the guys who have been active,” Maboe told his club’s official website.

“I’m energised and ready to give it my all if given a chance but will also share my experiences with my teammates to ensure we advance to the group stages.”

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker says they have done their homework on 15 de Agosto de Akonibe ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup clash on Saturday.

The Maroons have already departed for Equatorial Guinea for their first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup 2nd Preliminary Round on Saturday.

Stellies come into this fixture after they beat Kaizer Chiefs 5-4 on penalties in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16.

Barker has since shared his thoughts on their two-legged fixture against the side from Equatorial Guinea.

“We watched the matches that they played against the team from Seychelles to get to this stage, and we’ve analysed that and looked into the type of team they are, and the formation and style that they play with,” Barker told his club’s official website.

“It’s not easy based on just one or two games, but we’ve done sufficient analysis that we feel we can prepare adequately.

“In these encounters, it’s also often important for us to play the way we want to play and concentrate on our own strengths.”

As Cricket South Africa is now weeks into its second Professional Women’s Domestic season, it continues to thrive under its new name – the Hollywoodbets Pro Series, which includes both the Hollywoodbets Pro50 and Pro20 Competitions.

This exciting transformation followed the announcement of Hollywoodbets as the main sponsor, marking a significant new chapter in South Africa’s women’s cricket.

The professionalisation of women’s cricket now allows the top 6 teams, which make up Division 1, to contract 11 players each, further bolstered by the addition of high-performance and nationally contracted players.

This marks a significant step in elevating the standard of women’s cricket, ensuring a competitive and well-resourced environment for players at the highest level.

Looking forward to the season ahead, the captains of the six Division 1 teams are focused on elevating their performance and contributing to their teams’ success, with personal goals ranging from consistency and discipline to continuous improvement and making impactful plays in critical moments

We caught up with a few of them to find out what specific personal goals they have set for themselves and how they believe their skills and experience contribute to the team’s overall strategy and performance. This is what they had to say…

Knights Captain, Izel Cilliers: This season, I really want to focus on being more consistent with my batting and stepping up in those nail-biting moments. I think my experience can help guide the younger players.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – OCTOBER 12: Izel Cilliers (Captain) of Knights Women during the Hollywoodbets Pro50 match between WSB Western Province Women and Knights Women at WSB Newlands Cricket Ground on October 12, 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa.
Lions Captain, Kgomotso Rapoo: My personal goals are quite simple: always be 1% better than the previous season. Playing as a leg-spin all-rounder is not that easy, but my coming to bat in the middle will help our team, especially with the mindset role I’m playing.

WP Women’s Captain, Leah Jones: My goal for this season is just to be the best disciplined version of myself, meaning that I want to be a more disciplined cricketer in all areas (on and off the field). I think we’re a team that has a lot of talented and hardworking players, so I would like to take lots of wickets, especially big wickets, score lots of runs, save runs in the field, and take catches (easy or difficult) so that I can contribute to our team winning games.

Hollywoodbets Dolphins Pro50 Captain, Nondumiso Shangase: My goal is to make more runs and bowl more overs than last season. My team is strong, and we have talented players who can take the game away from the opposition. My experience and skills are just the cherry on top. As far as inspiration goes, Coach Dinesha is playing a huge role in my life; she has changed the way I see the game and the way I play. The support we receive is really important; it boosts us and encourages us to do well.

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – NOVEMBER 17: Nondumiso Shangase, captain of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Ladies during the Hollywoodbets Pro20 match between Hollywoodbets Dolphins Women and Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers at Chatsworth Oval on November 17, 2024 in Durban, South Africa.
Fidelity Titans Captain, Masabata Klaas: My personal goals for this season is to make sure that I always contribute to the team and ensuring that I’m giving my best in the field of play with the experience I have from the National Team I believe that it makes a huge difference in the team with regards to the way I’m always willing to help out other players..

Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers Captain, Nicolien Janse van Rensburg: My goal for this season is to be the best version of myself and to do everything possible and what is expected of me to help my team win games. I think the passion I have for the game will also inspire my teammates to give it their all and to leave everything out on the field every single game.

The Zimbabwean international scored a crucial away goal during Amakhosi’s 3-1 defeat to Zesco in their Caf Confederation Cup play-off round first leg in Ndola.

Lazarous Kambole put Zesco ahead midway through the first half, while Jesse Were doubled the hosts’ lead until Billiat reduced the deficit before the half-time break.

However, Were netted an early goal in the second half, while Billiat had a goal ruled offside as Zesco take a two goal advantage into the return leg.

‘We didn’t come here to lose,’ Billiat told the media.

‘Of course, it’s a great feeling to score, but it would have been an even better feeling if we would have won or we would have gotten a draw.’

Billiat admits that he is not happy with the result, but is confident that ‘we will do better on Saturday’, when Chiefs welcome Zesco to the FNB Stadium for the play-off second leg.

When asked about his chances of scoring in the return leg, the former Mamelodi Sundowns star said: ‘I would like to. But it’s not so important if I score, it’s more important that we will go through, as that’s what we all want.’

The match at the FNB Stadium kicks off at 8pm.
