“Scott McTominay scored the best overhead kick I’ve ever seen, and it might not have been the best goal of the night!” Steve Clarke told BBC Scotland.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has announced that he will retire from football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Broos guided South Africa to a commanding 3-0 win over Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium, which saw the country finish top of the Group C standings.

As a result, Bafana have secured their qualification to the World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament back in 2010.

The Belgian mentor also guided Bafana to a Bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations after they finished in third place in 2023.

Broos has since confirmed that he will retire from coaching after leading Bafana at the 2026 World Cup.

“I really hope that in December, at Afcon, we will try to do as well as the last one… hopefully even better. But I hope that with all those high-level tournaments, and certainly next year in America, with the World Cup, that players will have the opportunity to go to higher competitions, because they deserve it first of all, and they need it also,” Broos told SuperSport TV after the match.

“And if we can make that step in the future, you will see that South Africa will be getting even better than they are already now. So again, don’t ask me what my emotions are for the moment. I don’t have words for that.

“I hope that the player who was in the squad should go to America. For me, it’s a sentimental reason. You all know that I was already in a World Cup at the end of my career as a player, and now I do it again.

“I think this is the right moment, next year after the World Cup, to stop my career and to go to my family and enjoy the next 20 years with my grandchildren and my children. But first of all, there is some work to do and we will try to do it well,” he concluded.

Bafana Bafana booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after claiming a 3-0 victory over Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday evening.

South Africa got off to the perfect start and took the lead as early as the fifth minute when Thalente Mbatha fired a thunderous strike into the back of the net from outside the box to make it 1-0.

Bafana had a chance to double their lead just before 20 minutes of play, but Teboho Mokoena failed to guide his header home from Oswin Appollis’ corner.

South Africa did eventually take the lead in the 26th minute when Evidence Makgopa set up Appollis, who struck a first-time volley to find the back of the net and double his team’s lead.

Hugo Broos was forced to make a substitution in the 35th minute when Mohau Nkota came on to replace the injured Thapelo Morena.

The game went into the half-time break with South Africa taking a 2-0 lead into the break.

Aubrey Modiba had a chance to extend his side’s lead early in the second half, but he blazed his effort wide of the target.

Fiacre Ntwari came to his side’s rescue in the 67th minute when he produced two saves to deny both Nkota and Mudau in quick succession.

Bafana grabbed their third goal in the 72nd minute when Makgopa headed the ball home after latching on to a corner from Appollis.

Rwanda nearly pulled a goal back in the 82nd minute when Williams was caught off his line with an audacious long-range effort that came off the post.

With minutes left to play, Broos brought on Cupido, Aubaas, and Shabalala to replace Makgopa, Mbule, and Mbatha.

South Africa held on to its lead until the final whistle to secure the win and qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Stellenbosch FC striker Ashley Cupido has received a late call-up to replace the injured Lyle Foster in the Bafana Bafana squad.

Cupido returns to the Bafana setup for the first time since their victory over Mozambique in an international friendly on 10 June 2025.

The 24-year-old scored his first goal for South Africa in that game as they went on to secure a 2-0 win at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

The Stellies striker joins the camp when Bafana are sitting in second place in the Group C standings with 15 points after nine matches.

Cupido will be hoping to get his chance to shine when they take on Rwanda in their final qualifier at the Mbombela Stadium, with kick-off set for 18:00.

“Stellenbosch FC striker Ashley Cupido has received a late call-up to the South African squad ahead of the Tuesday qualifiers against Rwanda after being selected as an injury replacement by coach Hugo Broos,” Stellies said in a statement.

“Cupido returns to the first time since the 10th of June 2025, when he last featured and scored his maiden goal for Bafana in a 2-0 friendly win over Mozambique.

“In total, the 24-year-old has won six senior international caps to date and previously represented South Africa at the 2024 COSAFA Cup that was held on home soil in Gqeberha.

“He joins the squad at a time when Bafana Bafana currently occupy second position in the Group C standings and face a must-win encounter against Rwanda to secure automatic qualification to next year’s World Cup.

“The match between South Africa and Rwanda is scheduled to kick off at 18h00 on Tuesday, 14 October, and will be played at Mbombela Stadium.”

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos and captain Ronwen Williams share their thoughts ahead of Tuesday’s must-win World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.

South Africa will need to win their final qualifier against Rwanda when the two sides meet at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

However, Bafana’s hopes of qualifying depend on whether Nigeria can beat Benin by three goals or more.

Broos says the team’s spirit is high and they have not given up on the possibility of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

“We are back mentally and that is very important. The (team’s) qualities didn’t disappear with the draw against Zimbabwe,” Broos said.

“It was mentally that we had to recover and turn the button. You can be sure that the button has been turned, and mentality, the team spirit and the belief is there again,” he said.

“This is another amazing thing about this team and after the uppercut we got on Friday, everyone can turn the button and focus on the next job in the shortest period of time.

“Therefore, I believe again and I’m confident that tomorrow we will fight for it again, and we will try to win the game, and we will have a big chance to win.”

Williams shared the same sentiment as his coach and insisted they will enter their final qualifier with a positive mindset.

“Obviously we were a bit down, we were devastated but as the coach told us, we had 24 hours to clean that feeling out of our system.

“If you could have seen our training yesterday you would have seen that the boys mean business.

“I mean, the coach emphasised this, why do we need to start doubting ourselves now? Yes, it was a setback, but we shouldn’t forget what we’ve done over the last few years.

“We have come in leaps and bounds, and you know we’ve done extremely well. So, we don’t have to change much, we don’t have to have any doubts, and we still believe in the team that we’ve got.

“We still believe that there’s all to play for and we believe that we can make history tomorrow. You can feel and you can sense that inside the team and the players, the mindset is good.

“But like I said, of course we would have loved things to be different, but they are not. So, the boys know that we have to dig deep, we have to go again and just leave our all on the field tomorrow night.”

SportsClub takes a look at what Bafana Bafana need to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa needed a win against Zimbabwe but they were forced to settle for a goalless draw at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

What did not play in their favour was the fact that Benin beat Rwanda 1-0 in Kigali, while Nigeria beat Lesotho 2-1 in Polokwane.

Benin find themselves sitting at the top of the Group C standings with 17 points, followed by Bafana in second with 15 points and Nigeria in third with 14 points after nine matches.

But what does Bafana Bafana need to qualify?

South Africa will need to win their final match against Rwanda but will also need other results to go their way.

They will need Nigeria to beat Benin by three goals or more, which will see both Bafana and Nigeria qualify.

However, Benin will qualify for the World Cup if Bafana played to a draw against Rwanda.

South Africa got off to a good start and produced the first chance of the game in the 14th minute when Khuliso Mudau picked out Sipho Mbule, who blazed his effort over the target.

Mbule had another opportunity to hand Bafana the lead halfwaythrough the first half when he unleashed a thunderous strike from distance but Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi made a great save to deny the midfielder.

Bafana should have taken the lead on the stroke of half-time when Oswin Appollis picked out Mohau Nkota, who saw his curling effort crash off the woodwork.

Hugo Broos opted to ring changes at the restart when he introduced Bathusi Aubaas and Thapelo Morena to replace Sithole and Nkota.

The Warriors were reduced to 10-men in the 63rd minute when Knowledge Musona received his marching orders for a second yellow card of the match.

Broos made two more substitutions after 80 minutes when Appollis and Modiba were replaced by Tshepang Moremi and Evidence Makgopa.

South Africa came close to taking the lead in the 83rd minute but Lyle Foster hit the post with his low drive at goal.

Zimbabwe had a few chances to grab a late goal but Ronwen Williams came to South Africa’s aid to deny the Warriors.

Mbule and Mokoena had a chance to score the winning goal for Bafana in the closing stages of the game but Arubi did well to deny the midfielders.

Bafana were down to 10-men deep into stoppage time when Mbokazi was shown a red card, which seemed to be the last action of play as the game ended goalless in Durban.

South Africa and Zimbabwe are set to go head-to-head in their penultimate World Cup qualifier when they meet at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday evening.

Hugo Broos’ side comes into this match in second place in the Group C standings, with 14 points from eight matches played.

Williams hopes his side can achieve a positive result in their next two encounters to ensure their qualification for the World Cup.

“We know what is at stake. This is the business end of the qualifiers, but nothing has changed and we need to be the same team we have been for the last two or three years.

“We have been growing, and we have been so good, but we need to finish it on a positive note.

“We have set ourselves high standards. When we started the World Cup campaign, we said we wanted to qualify and it is close now.”
