Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has opened up on scoring his first goal for South Africa.

Mbokazi played the full 90 minutes in South Africa’s 2-1 defeat against Panama at the DHL Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Chicago Fire defender netted his first goal for Bafana in great fashion, scoring a screamer from outside the box to find the back of the net.

Mbokazi has broken his silence on scoring his first national team goal, stating that he does not practise long-range shots during training.

“I do take shots even at training, but I cannot really say I practice them. If the opportunity allows, I take a shot at the goal,” Mbokazi told SABC Sport.

“I am happy to be around the players that I am used to playing with and have not played with for a long time, who encourage me to keep on working hard because it will give me a chance to continue to play with them.

“We played well, and the loss doesn’t mean we played badly. We will still continue to push because this result will push to not want to find ourselves in this position in the games that are coming.

“The experience that I gained from that side in the games that I have played, maybe if I can bring that to the national team when we go to the World Cup, I will be able to help. Even though I cannot point to anything in particular, it will show that I have learnt something abroad,” he concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs right back Thabiso Monyane believes there is “massive progression” within the team since their first friendly against Vitesse.

The Glamour Boys suffered a 2-1 defeat to Dutch Eredivisie side FC Twente in a friendly match on Wednesday.

Daan Rots opened the scoring for the Dutch side before Inácio Miguel netted an equalising goal, but Sayfallah Ltaief grabbed the winning goal for Twente late in the game at the Sportpark Voetbalvereniging Rood Zwart.

Monyane says his side have to move on from this defeat, stating, ‘you never lose, you always learn’.

“We conceded twice in critical phases of the game,” Monyane told his club’s official website.

“That was tough. We worked so hard to get back into the game and then we concede a goal so late.

“However, we learn from this. I always say, ‘you never lose, you always learn’.

“I have been received well by the technical team, the players and the staff, arriving from the other side of Soweto.

“It has been a breath of fresh air and I am embracing a new culture.”

“I feel that there has been massive progression since we played our first game against Vitesse last week Tuesday. Our time in the Netherlands, facing really good opponents, has been a top-top experience.

“I feel optimistic. We are Kaizer Chiefs, a Club with a rich history.

“We have seen in Holland how big the Club is, with so many fans coming out to support us. We don’t want to disappoint them.

“If Kaizer Chiefs do well, the country does well. We want to put a smile on our supporters’ faces,” he concluded.

Amakhosi drew first blood when they opened the scoring in the 36th minute through Reeve Frosler, who found the back of the net with a strike from range.

The Dutch side eventually found the equalising goal a minute after the restart when Dillan Solomons diverted the ball into his own net.

Vitesse completed their comeback with 20 minutes left to play when Andy Visser slotted the ball past Bruce Bvuma from close range to secure a 2-1 victory for his side.

Kwayiba got his name on the scoresheet as Bafana Bafana secured a 2-0 victory over Mozambique in their international friendly played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Chippa United midfielder had an impressive game and walked away with the Man of the Match award for his efforts against Mozambique.

Broos was happy with his team’s performances but reserved special praise for the 25-year-old’s display in the two friendly matches.

“He could’ve scored three goals today, but ok the chances were there and the way they created the chances were very good.

“The way we pressed the opponent was also good so I think yes, I can just look back to the two games and as a happy coach.”

Ronwen Williams is the regular captain of the national team, but the armband was given to Fawaaz Basadien for their friendly against Tanzania.

Bafana coach Hugo Broos has since confirmed that Sibisi will wear the armband when they take on Mozambique this evening.

“Obviously (captaining Bafana Bafana) ranks very high (in his list of achievements) and for me it’s a privilege and an honour to be able to lead the team, and I’d like to thank the coach for showing confidence in me,” Sibisi said.

“We’ve been together from the very first camp when he came (to South Africa) and I’d like to say thanks to him because there were sometimes question marks whenever I was here. But to be able to lead the team tomorrow will be a huge honour and a privilege for me.”

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos knows it will not be an easy game and has urged his side not to underestimate Mozambique.

South Africa had to settle for a goalless draw when they came up against Tanzania at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday.

Bafana will be hoping for a positive result when they take on Mozambique in their next international friendly at the same venue this evening.

Broos is relishing the chance to take on their next opponents and wants to give each player the opportunity ti get game time under their belt.

“First of all, I am looking forward to the game tomorrow (today) and as you know it will be a totally different team to the one that played (against Tanzania) last Friday,” he said.

“But as I said, I want to give play time to everybody who is here in camp with us and give them the opportunity to express themselves on the pitch.

“It will not be an easy game as we are playing against a good opponent. I think, if I’m not mistaken, they are doing well in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the moment.”

“They also had a very good AFCON last year in Ivory Coast, so Mozambique are certainly not a bad team. On the other side, it will be a good test for all those new and young players who are with us at the moment.”

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says their upcoming international friendlies will give his players the opportunity to show their quality and prove themselves.

South Africa are scheduled to face Tanzania in the first friendly set to be played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday, June 6.

The South African national team will then take on Mozambique in their second friendly at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on June 10.

Broos has already announced his final Bafana squad for their two upcoming international friendlies.

“The performance is the most important thing,” Broos said.

“We want to win the two games, and we will do everything to win them. But more importantly, it is the performance of the players, certainly the new players and again, I will not put pressure on them.

“They just have to play their game and then we will see, evaluate what we are going to do in the future.

“The opponents are not the strongest ones, but certainly not the weakest of Africa. Both countries were at the AFCON last year, so even Mozambique is in a good space to go to the World Cup next year.

“So this means there will be a good opponent in the two games, and therefore, again, I think it’s a good opportunity for everyone to prove themselves, to show their qualities.”

Cape Town City midfielder Thabo Nodada has commented on his road to full fitness following his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Nodada made 22 appearances across all competitions last season before he sustained a foot injury that kept him sidelined for six months.

The 29-year-old last game for the Citizens was during their goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs in March this year.

The midfielder is yet to feature for Erik Tinkler’s side this season and has missed all their fixtures as he continues to return to full fitness.

“I’m feeling good, but I’m still working on my fitness and being cautious,” said Nodada in conversation with the club’s media department.

“My focus is on making a long-term contribution to the squad. This is not just for a single game.”
