The Sunshine Tour recognised some of the standout performances from its professionals at its 2025/26 Sunshine Tour Season Awards held at the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate on Wednesday evening.

Amongst the notable awards of the evening, Casey Jarvis received the prestigious Commissioner’s Award in recognition of his outstanding performances in winning three times on the Sunshine Tour – including the DP World Tour co-sanctioned Investec South African Open – and a further victory on the DP World Tour alone. He also finished second in the Joburg Open.

“The Commissioner’s Award is in recognition of the player who broke through and just kept on achieving. Casey did exactly this over the season. He’s a wonderful young talent and we wish him all the best as he now looks forward to playing the Majors as well,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.

Herman Loubser won the Players’ Player of the Year Award, while Shaun Norris was honoured with the Sportsman of the Year Award, and Hennie Otto received the Executive Director’s Award for his longevity on the Sunshine Tour.

Loubser was recognised by his fellow professionals for a season in which he won on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series and had a further four top-five finishes in what has been his most successful season on the Tour.

“I wasn’t expecting this. When other players vote for you and they recognise how much work it takes and how hard it is to perform, it really is special to receive that,” he said.

Norris received the Sportsman of the Year Award for his act of sportsmanship during his playoff with Jayden Schaper in December’s Alfred Dunhill Championship, when he applauded Schaper’s brilliant fairway bunker shot onto the green in the playoff.

“We all strive to win tournaments, and here was a youngster with all the talent in the world who had a wonderful year leading up to that event. It’s hard to win, so for him in that position, to pull off a shot like that, I just felt it deserved an applause. I was amazed by the shot, so I just felt like congratulating him for even pulling it off, and then making the putt on top of it. He did everything correctly and he pulled it off, so for me it was just a case of knowing what it feels like to go through that and to try and win a tournament, which is not easy. I was very happy for him to pull that off,” said Norris.

Otto was recognised for his incredible longevity in a career that started on the Sunshine Tour in 1999 and which has seen him win multiple titles here and on the DP World Tour.

“The Sunshine Tour gave me opportunities and from there I was able to play on the HotelPlanner Tour and DP World Tour. I want to thank the Tour for where I am now. And to the younger professionals, I’d like to say please realise the opportunities you get through the Sunshine Tour to achieve your higher goals in the game,” said Otto.

In other awards, Daniel van Tonder received the Best Finish to Win Award for his phenomenal closing stretch of two birdies and an eagle to win the Serengeti Playoffs on the Courier Guy Playoffs series.
Haydn Porteous received the Comeback Player of the Year Award for winning on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series this season, his first victory on the Sunshine Tour since 2016.

And Kyle Barker received both the Media Choice Award, recognising the player who created the most engagement in promoting the Tour, and the Tour Style Award, voted by the players and recognising the individual who stood out for his overall presence on and off the golf course.

Reflecting on the significance of the awards, Abt said: “This was a wonderful celebration of our Tour and our players. We run a big Tour with roughly 30 events on our schedule, and this is a moment for the players to look back and realise they’ve done well this season.”

With two tournaments to go, the Sunshine Tour’s 2025-26 season is far from over. In fact, it’s now only starting to get real in terms of opportunity.

The Courier Guy Playoffs brings together the leading available professionals on the Sunshine Tour Courier Guy Order of Merit for a two-tournament showdown – The Serengeti Playoffs and the DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB.

This week’s Serengeti Playoffs at Serengeti Estates offers 3 000 points, while the DNi Tour Championship at De Zalze Golf Club at the end of March offers 5 000 points.

At Serengeti this week, the top 60 available professionals on the current Courier Guy Order of Merit are in the field for this 72-hole, no halfway cut showpiece. They’re playing for the right to be amongst the top 50 professionals on the Courier Guy Order of Merit who qualify for the DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB.

These two events will end the season. But at the same time, they’ll open up a world of opportunity for the top performers as part of the Sunshine Tour’s global pathway via the HotelPlanner Tour and DP World Tour.

The winner of the Courier Guy Order of Merit earns a place in the Nedbank Golf Challenge in honour of Gary Player and two Majors, namely The PGA Championship and The Open.

The leading player in the top 10 of the final Courier Guy Order of Merit who doesn’t already have status on the DP World Tour will earn a card for next season. The next two leading players will receive cards on the HotelPlanner Tour for next season.

There are also a host of cash incentives to play for over these next two tournaments.

Apart from the individual tournament prize funds, the leading three players on the final Courier Guy Order of Merit will receive R500 000 (first place), R200 000 (second place) and R100 000 (third place) respectively.

The winner of the Courier Guy Order of Merit will receive an MSC international cruise, while players finishing second and third will each receive a five-day, four-night local cruise.

And the top three Sunshine Tour professionals from the final Courier Guy Order of Merit will win a Hyundai for a year.

The end of the season will also see the crowning of the Fortress Rookie of the Year, with the top player here earning a R400 000 bonus.

And both the winner of the Courier Guy Order of Merit and Fortress Rookie of the Year will receive automatic entry into the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions supported by Attacq and WCMC in June this year, where they will compete for a first prize of R1 million.

This Sunshine Tour season is far from over.

A world of golf opportunity is about to tee off.

The Sunshine Tour’s most widespread gathering of winners from across the South African game – the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions – is building to yet another impressive tournament when this showpiece event tees off at Royal Johannesburg’s famed East Course next season.

The 4-7 June 2026 tournament is positioned as a premium platform that recognises achievement, advances inclusivity, and supports the development of sport in South Africa as a catalyst for social and economic development.

Willie Vos, CEO of Waterfall City Management Company (WCMC), said: “We are very proud to be associated with the Sunshine Tour for the third consecutive year, as our organisations share strong brand values. At Waterfall City, we are driven by passion, a commitment to excellence, and an innovative approach to everything we do, while always showing respect and care for the people we serve. These values are clearly reflected in the Sunshine Tour’s reputation for golf excellence, its progressive outlook, and its inclusive approach – particularly through its support of golfers with disabilities, which underscores a deep respect for the sport and its participants.”

Michael Clampett, Asset and Property Executive at Attacq, said the tournament reflects the company’s long-term vision for Waterfall City as more than a commercial destination. “Waterfall City was designed to be a place where business, lifestyle and community intersect. Supporting the Tournament of Champions allows us to invest in a platform that celebrates excellence while contributing to the growth and transformation of South African sport.”

The field for this tournament is one of the deepest and most comprehensive in terms of winners in the South African game as it includes, upon their availability:

The winner of the 2025/26 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by the Courier Guy,
The 2025/26 Fortress Rookie of the Year
The leading Papwa Sewgolum Class player from the 2025/26 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by the Courier Guy not otherwise exempt
The South African winners of international tournaments held outside of the borders of South Africa from 1 January 2025 until the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions, supported by Attacq and WCMC.
The winner of the 2026 Sunshine Ladies Tour Investec Order of Merit
The Sunshine Ladies Tour winners from 2026
The winner of the 2025 Betway Big Easy Tour Order of Merit
The winner of the 2026 Africa Amateur
The leading amateur from the GolfRSA Order of Merit as nominated by GolfRSA
The leading golfers within the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA)
Five wild card entries
With a prize fund of R2.5 million, including R1 million for the winning professional, the tournament will feature comprehensive coverage on SuperSport Channel 213 Golf. Professionals and amateurs will compete over 72 holes of stroke play, with SADGA golfers contesting 36 holes of medal play.

This season’s road to the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions, supported by Attacq and WCMC on the Sunshine Tour alone included a thrilling start by Mexico’s Luis Carrera when he won the first two tournaments of the season back-to-back.

Michael Hollick claimed a win in a groundbreaking season for him which has seen him graduate to the DP World Tour.

Former DP World Tour champion Haydn Porteous found his way back into the winner’s circle for the first time in eight years.

Young star Casey Jarvis won twice in three weeks on the Sunshine Tour in November. And Jayden Schaper stunned world golf when he claimed back-to-back victories in Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned events in December on his way to breaking into the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career.

South Africa’s MJ Viljoen claimed a dramatic playoff victory in the SDC Open at the Zebula Golf Estate & Spa on Sunday, securing his first title on the HotelPlanner Tour.

Viljoen came from one shot behind at the start of the round and looked headed for a comfortable victory when he was at one point, three shots clear on the back nine. But a charging Deon Germishuys and a weather delay quickly changed that.

Germishuys birdied two of his last four holes for a 67 to set the clubhouse target at sixteen under. Viljoen came back after the delay and bogeyed his next three holes to slip one behind Germishuys. Viljoen then birdied the par five 18th for a 70 to force the playoff.

Viljoen birdied the 18th to claim the title in the playoff.

“It’s massive. I went through a lot the last two or three years. I had some decent starts on the HotelPlanner Tour. It’s time it happened. This opens a lot of doors for me,” said Viljoen.

“It was a lot of emotions today. I threw it away a bit after the start again, but I kept believing in myself and I brought it through. I look at the leaderboard but I try not to react to it too much. Try to keep the mind clear and stay in the moment, and just play.”

Viljoen was very happy to share the special moment with his family.

“It’s very cool. My wife flew to Johannesburg on Friday, and it’s very nice to have them here.”

It’s Viljoen’s fourth Sunshine Tour victory of his career, but more importantly his first on the HotelPlanner Tour which has provided a valuable pathway for South African professionals to graduate onto the DP World Tour.

Jean Hugo and Maxence Giboudot shared third place on 14 under. South Africa’s Ryan van Velzen produced an incredible closing 63, with a back nine of 29 to secure a top-five finish.

This was the first of four tournaments co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour, with the next event set to take place at Royal Cape Golf Club this week in the CIRCA Cape Town Open.

Skogen signed for a 64 to top the leaderboard, and Giboudot birdied the last for a 68 to join him.
“I’m over the moon. I made some long putts and couldn’t be more pleased,” said Skogen, who finished fifth in this tournament last year.

The key to his round on Saturday was some incredible putting, especially for his two eagles on the 15th and 18th holes.

“I hit a nice shot into 15 and it stayed just short of the ridge, and I got lucky with the putt. On 18, that putt had some speed but went in the hole so I got lucky with that one,” he said.

His round of eight under was one better than he’d told his friend would be needed for him to get back into this tournament.

“I told my friend yesterday that if I shoot seven under I’d get back in the tournament. I played poorly on moving day here last year so I did better than that today. I felt like I did good work over the winter so hopefully I’m seeing the fruits of my labour.”

Giboudot remains in contention to become the second French winner of this title after Clement Sordet in 2022.

The leaders are one stroke clear of South Africa’s MJ Viljoen, who posted a 66, and Germany’s Jannik de Bruyn, who signed for a 67.

It’s a tight leaderboard going into Sunday’s final round, and it’s exactly what Skogen is looking forward to.

“Who wouldn’t be excited? We get to play for a win. That’s what we work for. Everybody wants to win. I haven’t won as a pro and didn’t win much in college. It’s been a long time since I’ve won something.”

Martin Vorster went back to playing golf like a kid again, and it resulted in a round of seven-under-par 65 to earn him the lead in the first round of the SDC Open at the Zebula Golf Estate & Spa.

Vorster focused himself on the pure enjoyment of the game as he finished the day with a one-stroke lead over fellow South Africans Jaco Prinsloo and MJ Viljoen.

“I think it just comes back to playing golf again. I got stuck in the technicalities of swinging the golf club and being too focused on that. Today it was just about playing golf, hitting shots and just being like a kid out there,” he said.

It was a key mindset shift for Vorster, who felt towards the end of last year that he was playing good golf but not getting the rewards. And it led to the perfect start in this Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour co-sanctioned event, which gives him confidence for this key run of four co-sanctioned tournaments on home soil.

“It’s been a tough couple of months coming into this stretch, but I’m really proud with how I played and fought today. The game felt really solid. I felt like it’s starting to come back again. I’m so happy with the start. It’s been just about getting back to playing golf.”

His round was built on a solid first nine of six birdies and only one bogey. He added another two birdies on his second nine.

“I think we did a lot of good work in the preparation and mapped out the course really well to give myself the best chance for birdies,” said Vorster, who has his wife caddying for him for only the second time this week.

“I love nature so that helps out here, and having my wife on the bag is really special. It’s the second week she’s caddying for me. It’s just fun to have your life partner with you and to be in a bubble out there having great chats. She did a great job today. We just enjoyed it.”

Behind him, Prinsloo also felt the peace of a bushveld setting he grew up in, and drew on that in his round of 66.

“I grew up in Thabazimbi which is not far from here, and I’ve played here a lot and always enjoyed it. The course is always in good condition, especially this year. I love being here. It’s just the peace and tranquillity of the bushveld. It’s nice to see the animals and everything else. It’s calming,” he said

Selwyn Nathan has officially announced his retirement as Executive Director of the Sunshine Tour, prompting an outpouring of tributes throughout the world of golf for the Tour’s longest serving executive member and a passionate and devoted servant of South African golf.

Nathan will officially retire from his executive position in June this year, with Thomas Abt, the Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, assuming all executive responsibilities. However, Nathan will remain
on the Sunshine Tour Board as a non-executive member.

“I would like to thank Johann Rupert for the faith he has shown in me and for entrusting me with a leadership role on the Sunshine Tour. He has been an immense guiding force for me and it has been an honour to work with him on the growth of our Tour. I would also like to thank all the players, the directors, the sponsors and the staff I’ve had the privilege of working with. I have been blessed to have had the most fantastic career with the most incredible people, starting in a small office as part of a team including Helen Bland and Brian Henning. It’s given me a beautiful life. In Thomas Abt, the Sunshine Tour has a true leader capable of taking our Tour to even greater heights,” Nathan said at the Sunshine Tour AGM in January.

Johann Rupert, Chairman of the Sunshine Tour, paid special tribute to a man who had a humble start in the game as an assistant professional and who rose to become one of the most influential figures in world golf and a cornerstone of the professional growth of the South African game.

“Selwyn is surely one of South Africa’s longest-serving sports administrators, having started with the Sunshine Tour as far back as 1969 when he was just a young assistant professional. He has helped guide this Tour through many challenges and transitions, and has been a constant source of wisdom, courage and continuity as the Sunshine Tour has grown into what it is today. The end of his executive tenure brings to a close one of the most remarkable and colourful careers in our game. I would like to wish him well, and thank him sincerely for his unwavering service to the Sunshine Tour,” Rupert said.

Gary Player also paid a special tribute to Nathan. “I’d like to personally thank Selwyn for the commitment he has shown towards the Sunshine Tour and for the selfless work he has done in growing our Tour. I would also like to wish Thomas Abt all the best as he continues to build on the work of Selwyn and so many others that has made the Sunshine Tour what it is today. Our Tour is in a very healthy place as it provides vital opportunities for our professionals to graduate onto the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR for them to keep flying the South African flag on global fairways.”

Nathan’s formal departure from the executive of the Sunshine Tour brings to a close the career of a man who has been involved in every single facet of the professional game in South Africa and abroad since the 1960s.

During his tenure he has worked closely with three PGA TOUR Commissioners including Deane Beaman, Tim Finchem and Jay Monahan, and four DP World Tour Chief Executives in Ken Schofield, George O’Grady, Keith Pelley and Guy Kinnings.

He represented the Sunshine Tour at the founding meeting of the International Federation of PGA Tours in 1996, which was launched as the formal body of the global professional tours in golf.

Nathan has been instrumental in the growth of the Sunshine Tour, having served as Commissioner on several occasions and guiding the Tour through its most challenging periods such as the Covid-19 pandemic, and also representing the Tour’s interests globally as a member of the International Federation of PGA Tours.

He was part of the Sunshine Tour leadership team that also spearheaded the establishment of the Strategic Alliance with the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR and the global pathway this has created for South African golfers. He was also part of the core team, together with Gary Player, Sol Kerzner and Sam Feldman that launched the Nedbank Golf Challenge in honour of Gary Player.

He personally took it upon himself to revive Soweto Country Club as a beacon of hope for young golfers in Soweto, and which today hosts professional tournaments in the heart of this iconic township.

And he had the vision to create a viable programme of opportunity – the Papwa Sewgolum Class – within the Tour for historically disadvantaged professionals and help them to compete on an equal footing on Tour.

Nathan also helped launch the Sunshine Ladies Tour, which now boasts a schedule of eight tournaments, two of which are co-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour (LET), and which provides valuable playing opportunities for South Africa’s leading women amateurs and professionals.

“What makes Selwyn’s contribution so enduring is that it has never been limited to administration alone. He has consistently used the Sunshine Tour as a platform for opportunity – building initiatives that keep creating access for our members, our development players, and women’s professional golf,” said Rupert.

Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour who was mentored for the role by Nathan, said: “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Selwyn for his extraordinary commitment to the Sunshine Tour over more than 50 years. Very few individuals can claim such a legacy of sustained service, leadership, and belief in an institution. Selwyn’s contribution has not simply been measured in years, but in the stability, credibility, and growth he has helped foster. His presence on the Board has consistently brought wisdom, perspective, and an unwavering focus on what is best for the Tour and the people it serves.”

“Beyond his formal role as Executive Director, Selwyn has been a mentor to me personally, and to many others. He has always led with generosity – of time, knowledge, and encouragement – quietly shaping leaders rather than seeking recognition. His guidance has been grounded in experience, and a deep understanding of the game and its broader impact. I am profoundly grateful for the trust he has shown and the lessons he has shared, many of which will continue to guide me long after this chapter.”

Samuel Simpson’s final round of three-under-par 69 was enough to finally end Herman Loubser’s dominance of this year’s Mopani Zambia Open and earn the young South African his first victory on the Sunshine Tour.

Simpson’s bogey-free final round at the Nkana Golf Club earned him a one-stroke victory over Loubser on 11 under par.

Loubser, who had been at the top of the leaderboard since the first round, struggled with a closing 76 to take second place on 10 under par.

Luke Jerling, JJ Senekal and Lyle Rowe shared third place on nine under par.

Simpson teed off the final round five shots behind Loubser. But it was his ability to limit his mistakes on a final day when Loubser struggled to do the same in a round of three bogeys and one double bogey that made the difference.
However, Loubser’s commanding lead meant he and Simpson were still tied for the lead on 11 under par through 17 holes.

But Loubser’s bogey on the 18th hole ensured the victory went to Simpson.

Simpson is the second maiden winner on the Sunshine Tour this season after the opening five tournaments following Luis Carrera from Mexico.

Jonathan Broomhead’s incredible start to the season continued as he claimed a share of the lead in Wednesday’s first round of the Gary & Vivienne Player Challenge, a tournament that is the Sunshine Tour’s tribute to the remarkable career of Gary Player and the Gary & Vivienne Player Foundation’s work to improve the lives of underprivileged children.

Broomhead opened with a round of seven-under-par 65 at Benoni Country Club to share the lead with fellow South Africans Jason Roets and Samuel Simpson. They are two strokes clear of Graham van der Merwe, Malcolm Mitchell and Ricky Hendler.

Broomhead’s consistency at the start of the season has been phenomenal as he’s finished second and fourth in his first two tournaments.

He kept up that momentum on Wednesday with a bogey-free round that earned him a share of the lead.

“I started on the 10th and made a nice birdie there, and then kept it going. I strung a few nice birdies along the way. I hit the ball well and made some good putts for most of the round,” said Broomhead.

It wasn’t the most that he thought he could’ve taken from the round, but Broomhead was still satisfied.

“It was a good day. It’s the first day and we’re playing just three rounds this week, not four like the last few weeks. So you need to adjust a bit. But I was hitting it nicely so I wasn’t getting too upset. It was still good golf even though some of the putts weren’t falling.”

The Benoni Country Club course is a fitting venue this week as the site where Gary Player won very early in his professional career on the Sunshine Tour.

And for Broomhead, the golf course is providing a strong test this week.

“The course is good and the greens are rolling really well. It’s firming up quite a bit, and some of the flags in certain positions on the greens can be tricky.”

George Coetzee claimed the 15th title of his Sunshine Tour career with a three-stroke victory in the Serengeti Playoffs, and with it also secured the first win of the new Courier Guy Playoffs Series.

Coetzee signed for a solid 69 to win on 19 under par at Serengeti Estates. Daniel van Tonder finished second on 16 under par with a final round of 69.

After a slow and steady start with regular pars on the first seven holes, Coetzee made an eagle on the par-five eighth hole and added a further two birdies and just one bogey that was enough to ensure him a victory.

“It was a very busy day for me in my head. I tried to stay in my lane and do what I have to do, follow my routines and to follow my gameplan to play as well as possible. Things worked today, but you never know. It took me like five holes just to feel like it was me playing, and around the middle of the round it started to feel a little better,” he said.

For Coetzee, after returning from injury and celebrating the birth of his child in this time, this victory was very special.

“You want to do stuff that your kids can be proud of, like I am proud of my parents and I want my kid to be proud of me.”

With the victory Coetzee moves up with 48 places on the Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy to the 28th spot, securing a place in next week’s tournament – the season-ending DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB.

The top 50 players on the Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy after this event progress to the DNi Tour Championship presented by RMB at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate, which will bring down the curtain on the 2024/2025 season.

Playing in the leading group on Sunday, Daniel van Tonder, the current leader on the Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy leader, pushed hard on the final day but could not close in on Coetzee.

Stefan Wears-Taylor’s eight-under-par 64 in the final round moved him into a share of third place on 14-under-par with youngsters Kyle de Beer (67) and Stals Swart (70).

Altin van der Merwe ended the tournament in a share of sixth place on 13-under-par with a 68, and thereby secured his place as the current leader on the Fortress Top Rookie of the Year standings with the final tournament of the season to come.
