JJ Spaun shot a 5-under-par 65 to move into the lead after three rounds of the Sony Open on Saturday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, ahead of second-round co-leader Patrick Fishburn (68), Eric Cole (67) and Germany’s Stephan Jaeger (62) by one stroke.

Spaun is on a 13-under 197 going to Sunday’s final round in his 219th PGA Tour event, and is seeking his second victory. The first came in the 2022 Texas Open.

“I’ve felt pretty calm and relaxed,” Spaun said. “It’s always laid-back and easygoing. I’ve been carrying that mindset on the course, and it’s easy to feel that way when things are going your way and you’re playing well.”

Jaeger had the best score of the day, with birdies on six of the final 10 holes and equaled the best round of his professional career.

“To shoot a great round and be in contention is nice,” Jaeger said.

Spaun, Jaeger and Cole will be in the final grouping Sunday.

Keegan Bradley (64) Englishman Harry Hall (65) and Canadian Nick Taylor (65) are among a cluster of six golfers tied for fifth at 11 under. Bradley was the Sony Open runner-up last year.

Brian Harman (66) also is at 11 under. He was the only golfer in the field without a bogey or worse through 36 holes, a string that ended Saturday on the sixth hole. He had five birdies after that.

South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen was five under for the tournament on 205 after a thjird round 68 which Aldrich Potgieter missed the cut.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama shot an 8-under-par 65 to win The Sentry, the PGA Tour’s season opener, on Sunday at The Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii, making history in the process.

Matsuyama finished at 35-under 257, the lowest 72-hole score to par in PGA Tour history. It was good for a three-stroke victory over runner-up Collin Morikawa, who shot 67.

Matsuyama birdied the final hole, a par-5, to reach 35 under.

“That last putt, it felt like if I make it, then it’s going to be the record,” Matsuyama said. “So I’m so happy that it went in.”

It marked Matsuyama’s 11th career victory on the tour and follows two tournament titles last year.

Matsuyama, who turns 33 next month, took the lead during Friday’s second round and kept up his pace of birdies.

Morikawa had matched Matsuyama’s scores Friday and Saturday (65 and 62), entering the final round trailing by one shot.

South Korea’s Sungjae Im (65) was third at 29 under and Venezuela’s Jhonattan Vegas (65) placed fourth at 25 under.
Belgium’s Thomas Detry (71), Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg (64) and Canada’s Corey Conners (67) shared fifth place at 24 under.

Canada’s Taylor Pendrith recorded the first albatross in the 27-year history of the tournament, helping him to a 67 for the second day in a row. He ended up tied for 13th place at 22 under. His 2 on the par-5 fifth hole was the highlight, though a double-bogey on No. 17 took some shine off his round.

All 58 golfers who finished the tournament were 3 under or better, including South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout, whose final round 72 saw him finish tied 40th. His prizemoney for the weekend was US$81,000.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama is leading after an 11-under par 62 on Saturday to maintain a one-shot advantage through three rounds at The Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Matsuyama, who was the second-round leader, is in a two-man tussle with Collin Morikawa, who also shot 62 in the PGA Tour season-opening event.

Matsuyama, who set the tournament record for lowest 54-hole score at 27 under, and Morikawa were tied at the turn. Matsuyama had birdies on four of the last five holes.

“Was nice to have to put a round together like that from start to finish,” Morikawa said.

“Collin played well and I just kind of followed him, so good day,” Matsuyama said. “It was a lot of fun, but I would like for him to take it easy on Sunday.”

Belgium’s Thomas Detry is in third at 22 under after his 65. A 62 for South Korea’s Sungjae Im moved him into fourth at 21 under. His round included an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole. England’s Harry Hall (66) is in fifth place at 20 under.

Max Greyserman made a big move by shooting 63 to move to 19 under for the tournament. He played a bogey-free round and is even in sixth place with Will Zalatoris (65) and first-round leader Tom Hoge (68).

Cam Davis shot 64, yet lost ground on the leaders despite eagles on Nos. 5 and 14. The Australian is at 18 under with five other golfers.

South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout made a significant jump up the leaderboard with his third round 63 for total of 206 but is still 14 shots behind the pace. He is tied for 29th place.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama shot an 8-under-par 65 for the second day in a row on Friday to hold a one-shot lead midway through the PGA Tour season opener at The Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.

Matsuyama is at 16 under for the tournament. Collin Morikawa, who also had a 65 to go to 15 under, had a chance to pull even after making five consecutive birdies near the end of his round before he settled for par on the 18th hole.

Maverick McNealy (64) moved to 14 under to join Canada’s Corey Conners (66), Belgium’s Thomas Detry (65) and Hoge (68) in a tie for third place.
Detry’s highlights included reaching the green on the par-4 14th hole with his drive and sinking an 11-foot eagle putt.

Matsuyama started early Friday and set the tone, and felt the course setup and environment was bonus.

“Obviously the views are beautiful here,” Matsuyama said. “I haven’t played well here in a while, so it’s good to get off to a good start here.”

Matsuyama had a bogey-free round, including birdies on two of the three par-3 holes.

“I’m definitely satisfied with where I am,” he added.

Among a group of golfers with the best rounds on Friday were Keegan Bradley, who drained a 29-foot eagle putt on No. 18, and Wyndham Clark. They both shot 64.

Bradley and Clark are at 13 under in a four-way tie for seventh place with Cameron Young (67) and England’s Harry Hall (65).

Christiaan Bezuidenhout was the only South African in the field but is way off the pace after rounds of 70 and 73.

Cape Town City midfielder Thabo Nodada has commented on his road to full fitness following his lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Nodada made 22 appearances across all competitions last season before he sustained a foot injury that kept him sidelined for six months.

The 29-year-old last game for the Citizens was during their goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs in March this year.

The midfielder is yet to feature for Erik Tinkler’s side this season and has missed all their fixtures as he continues to return to full fitness.

“I’m feeling good, but I’m still working on my fitness and being cautious,” said Nodada in conversation with the club’s media department.

“My focus is on making a long-term contribution to the squad. This is not just for a single game.”

The attacking midfielder has been a key figure for the Citizens since his arrival and has made eight appearances across all competitions so far this season.

Enjoy an image gallery of Mamelodi Sundowns’ training session ahead of their opening CAF Champions League group stage clash against Maniema Union on Tuesday evening.

The Brazilians will kickstart their Group K fixture when they welcome the Congolese side to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Sundowns will come into this fixture looking to bounce back following their shock 2-1 defeat to Magesi FC in the final of the Carling Knockout Cup over the weekend.

Maniema Union, meanwhile, enters this clash off the back of a 1-0 win over Celeste in the Linafoot Ligue 1 at the Stade des Martyrs on November 20.

Mamelodi Sundowns against Maniema Union kicks off at 6pm on Tuesday.

Here are a few images of Mamelodi Sundowns’ training session:
