Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he was left frustrated following his side’s 2-1 defeat against Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Red Devils suffered their second defeat in the tournament through goals by Moussa Sow and Jeremain Lens before Wayne Rooney scored a late consolation goal to pull one back for his side in the 89th minute.
The 53-year-old admits that the Turkish side were the better team on the day and deserved to win for the effort and commitment they showed throughout the match.
‘They deserved to win. Football is not just about quality; it is about effort and commitment, it is about playing to your limits. In an atmosphere like this, to concede an early goal gives the opposition exactly what they want,’ Mourinho told the Manchester United website.
Mourinho says his side only have themselves to blame for the defeat, stating that United them in the match and were caught out on the counter-attack.
‘The opponent can then defend and counter-attack us with a lead and that is our fault for letting them be in that situation. They were playing a Champions League final and we were playing a summer friendly by the way the game started,’ he added.
Manchester United will now turn their attention back to the Premier League when they face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.
Kick-off has been set for 17:00.
