Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has listed last weekend’s MTN8 final victory as one of his best achievements in football alongside winning the Uefa Champions League.
The former FC Porto striker led his team to a penalty shootout victory over SuperSport United to win his first trophy in just his second season as a coach.
McCarthy famously had the chance to lift his first trophy after just a couple of months at the helm for the Citizens in the MTN8 last year, but his side lost that final on penalties against SuperSport United.
The former Bafana Bafana star, however, got his redemption in Saturday’s final and speaking to the media, revealed that the achievement ranks up to some of his biggest in football.
‘I think this one has got its own merit because like I said, as a player I was part of a group, I never did it on my own and I think this is a little bit the same but this one, we are the ones having to deal, having to manage 28-30 players and different personalities and different egos.
‘I think this one has to be almost right up there with the Champions League and scoring in a World Cup and scoring four goals in the African Nations Cup and being one of the prized assets of a major tournament,’ said McCarthy.
